Finally we had had enough by 4 pm and found a campsite just north of the largest town of Svolvaer. We did have some breaks in the rain for a bit of a walk along the shore.

It rained hard all night, which makes for a poor night sleep. It was still raining hard when we were packing up, which is always crappy. We headed out again on the E 10 north and after about 45 minutes we started to see blue sky ahead.

By an hour it was SUNNY and even hot. We pulled over to a rest stop and put up the tent to dry it out in less than 10 minutes.

There are 2 ferries here are we decided just to go for it, since they are timed to depart in succession and so it is easier to get them all together. We had to wait about 20 minutes for the ferry for the 20 minutes crossing from Breivikeidet to Svensby. From here it is a 20 km drive to the next ferry from Lyngseidet for 40 minutes to Olderdalen.

We had originally planned to try to make it near to the North Cape today, but really we had had enough of the cold and pouring rain by 3 pm and we made for Hammerfest, which is by the way the most northerly city in the world.

This is an oil and gas town mostly and there are few tourists. The hotel had a 70% off sale because of some construction so we jumped at the change for a bit of luxury. We braved the weather to try and get in a walk and found ourselves at the Royal and Ancient Polar Bear Society. This is a small free museum in the downtown. There are mementos of early life here in Hammerfest, a lot of stuffed animals, and historical photographs.

What an incredible difference a day makes since today it is 17 and sunny! There are very few sunny days at the North Cape and so we are starting to feel we might get lucky. Before leaving town we checked out the Struve Geodetic Arc.

“The Struve Arc is a chain of survey triangulations stretching from Hammerfest in Norway to the Black Sea, through 10 countries and over 2,820 km. These are points of a survey, carried out between 1816 and 1855 by the astronomer Friedrich Georg Wilhelm Struve, which represented the first accurate measuring of a long segment of a meridian. This helped to establish the exact size and shape of the planet and marked an important step in the development of earth sciences and topographic mapping. It is an extraordinary example of scientific collaboration among scientists from different countries, and of collaboration between monarchs for a scientific cause. The original arc consisted of 258 main triangles with 265 main station points. The listed site includes 34 of the original station points, with different markings, i.e. a drilled hole in rock, iron cross, cairns, or built obelisks.” Wikipedia

The sun continued to shine, but riding the last 100 km to the Cape it was very windy. The 7 km sea tunnel to the island of the cape was 6 degrees at the bottom. You go 4 km down down and then 1 km a cross and 4 km back up. I really felt sorry for the bike riders since this tunnel is the definition of dank. In fact it was VERY windy for the last 20 KM over the barren mountain passes.

About 5 km before the cape a deep cloudbank enveloped us and we feared that despite the sunny day we would see nothing at the cape. Luck would have it that we came down out of the clouds just in time. We arrived to the ticket booth to see 6 buses of tourist from the cruise ships in Honningsvag, dozens of RVs, and about 30 bikes from all over Europe.

We lost our sun about mid way and it got pretty cold after we left Ifjord. Gamvik is a very remote town on the far east of the peninsula. This is a tiny fishing village of brightly colored wooden houses. The nearest large town is Mehamn. Even camping here, which was bad was expensive. A room at the hostel with a shared bath was 990K ( 120USD ). It was also 6 degrees here and so we decided that the 120 km back to Ifjord was a better idea. At least warmer anyway.

There is a not so nice campground here but they did have hot showers. Funny thing was an American man came up to us to tell us that the road ahead “ was torn up for 10 km and it is all shale and boulders”. Wow hard to believe on the E6 ( of course it was 5 km of very good dirt road……).

The rain started about midnight and continued on and off all night. We did get a bit of a break for packing up but not much. We are making for Kirkenes 228 KM in and near the end of the road in Norway. It ends at Russia just 14 km further!

The last 20 km are dirt road with a few km of deeper gravel at the end. There is a lot of signage with border warnings like it is illegal to cross the border. Do not make contact across the border. Do not take photos of military personnel or vehicles. The use of tripods and telephoto lenses in the border area is illegal. OK!

saralou 13 Aug 2015 22:50

Today we leave Norway after 3 weeks of mostly ok weather. However, it rained almost all day. We made for the border of Finland in 55 Km. The roads here are very straight and all you see are trees, lakes, and reindeer. The reindeer are unpredictable especially the younggr ones. They will often stand on or near the road and not move at all until they suddenly jump out in front of you when you are several meters away.

https://farm1.staticflickr.com/430/2...b43bb9a7_c.jpgDSC03035 by Sara & Daniel Pedersen, on Flickr

The plan was to make some miles and the roads made this easier if a bit boring. The reindeer are quite stupid and will run out in front of you without warning. The warning signs here in Finland are yellow and list the entire upper half of the country as a reindeer hazard zone. There are a few moose signs here too, but as yet no moose. The reindeer here are bigger than those in Norway and with much bigger antlers. We saw a few really majestic specimens today. It did stop raining by 4 and so we kept riding to just past the Arctic Circle.

We finally found a campground south of Rovaniemi. We still had a bit of sun left to dry out our very wet tent. There were a few other bikers here that were headed to Nordkapp.

saralou 13 Aug 2015 22:52

Getting on the road about 10 we continued south. We had thought to camp on the coast, but there were not really any nice places and we decided that if we wanted to make Helsinki the next day it would be 488 Km. This would not leave us much time to try to organize the bike fork repair. We decided to go another 160 KM to Seinajoki for a total of 582 km today.

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3811/...6da19799_z.jpgScreen Shot 2015-08-08 at 7.28.58 PM by Sara & Daniel Pedersen, on Flickr

There was a great camp spot here, with lush grass and a river running thru the site. The lounge and kitchen was very nice. They had decent Internet also and we found a repair shop 178 KM away in Tampere. We figured we could stop here since it was on the way to see if they could repair the fork. If not we had BMW Helsinki as a back up.

The nice campground in Seinajoki has a sister in Helsinki and so we headed there. The place was packed mostly since it has a great location on the water and right at a Metro station. There were about 8 other bikers here too. We also met Paul and Sarah who are friends of friend in Seattle!

Helsinki

The rain, thunder, and lightning started at 4 am and it was truly unbelievable. That said we had no sleep because of the noise until after 7. We rolled out of the tent at 11. The Metro ride to the city is about 20 minutes to the Central train station. Here we could arrange a VISA FREE trip to Russia to see St Petersburg. Conveniently the boat was leaving the next day. We had decided that the hassle and expense of the visa for a 5-6 day trip was not worth it. The overnight ferry ride return was about the same price as the Visa fee. We did a bit of a walking tour of the downtown and then headed back to the campsite.

Getting off the boat the arrivals hall is totally chaos. You have to line up to get your tourist card. Lets say the Russians are Not like the uber friendly Brazilians! They photocopy every page of your passport as well, which was a bit creepy.

The Peter and Paul Fortress is the burial place of the Russian royalty. So that means all the Nicholas and Alexanders and their wives “Maria”. There is a cannon salute everyday at noon. The entire crown flinched when it went off it was SO loud.

What a whirlwind trip we had and now we are back to the ferry for the overnight crossing. We arrived to sunny weather in Helsinki and returned to the camping for another night. We had booked passage on the ferry to Estonia for the next afternoon. We finally had a couple of days to do nothing! The Ferries to Tallinn leave from the west harbor. It is easy to book on line and we found the Eckero Line was the cheapest for the afternoon sailing of the 3 options. You can also book 2 bikes and 2 people on one reservation, which is rarely the case.

We arrived early, but so did quite a few others. The bikes are all loaded on the second level of the ferry and there were lots of new looking tie down to secure them. The crossing was very calm. The boat is very nice and there are all kinds of different seating options. There were 6 or 7 bars since this is a bit of a booze cruise at night. There were 2 different bars with live band playing.

The forecast was for a light rain, but when we unloaded it was torrentially raining.
We had planned to camp, but even the streets were flooded so we did not think the campground would be better. The first few places we stopped were full and one had a suite for 180$. We by then were a ways from the city and looped back to finally find a hotel at a reasonable price.

saralou 23 Aug 2015 10:48

The next day of course it was spectacular. We drove to the old town and did a walking tour. There are 4 cruise ships docked today and so the old town was packed.

Day one we rode west to the coast 100 km to the “beach” town of Haapsalu. From here we backtracked 40 km and then rode south and west to Tartu. We took a lot of secondary and tertiary roads, some of which were dirt. Estonia is a very clean and prosperous looking country. The farms are neat and tidy and the homes even the old ones are well kept.

Riga’s Freedom Monument survived the Soviet rule because of a clever change in the symbolism of the robed woman holding three stars up. These stars originally signified Latvia’s three regions, but during Soviet times, the meaning was changed to prevent its demolition. The three stars were assigned to represent the three Baltic Republics, and the woman holding them represented Mother Russia.

The Three Brothers buildings, located side by side on Maza Pils at numbers 17, 19, and 21, represent three architectural styles present in Old Town and are the oldest stone houses in existence in Riga. They were built in the 15th, 17th, and 18th centuries.

Riga Cathedral, or Rigas Doms, is a massive Lutheran church originally dating from the early 13th century. Riga Cathedral is impressive for being the largest medieval church in the Baltics, its two-meter-thick walls, and its enormous pipe organ. During Soviet times, it was used as a concert hall.

The Swedish Gate was built in the latter part of the 17th century. Most of Riga’s walls, gates, and defensive systems have long since been torn down, but the Swedish Gate remains.

We did a bit of a walk into the city on our side of the river, where there are several large parks and the area famous for the old wooden houses. These are in stark contrast to the Soviet area concrete buildings.

The drive to the ferry dock is only 168 km and since the ship boards at 10 pm we had the whole day. We got on the road at noon and headed southwest to Saldus and then to Vetsilpis for 288 km. On the way south there was again construction, but the lights were better coordinated. And guess who…we rode past the Swiss biker again. He actually caught up and pasted us at one point where we had to wait so long at the stoplight. From here we again rode on the secondary roads to Vetsilpis.

We checked in and then got in line where we met a boisterous group of Latvians headed to Norway. They had their cabin near ours and invited us in for some home- made Vodka (very good) and venison burgers. Then we settled in for the night and the 10 am arrival to Nynashamn Sweden.

Stockholm may be one of Europe’s most beautifully situated cities. We took the metro the 20 minutes into town from the camping. We got of in the Old town or Gamla Stan and wandered around the very narrow cobbled streets. Other highlights were the changing of the guard at the royal palace, the waterfront, and the Vasa museum.

The Vasa museum displays the only almost fully intact 17th century ship that has ever been salvaged, the 64-gun warship sank on her maiden voyage in 1628. The ship itself is stunning and the displays are really interesting. They have done analysis of the wood to find out exactly what color the boat was and what was used to paint it. They have restored many of the sculptures. The king ordered this ship built his way, which is why it sank in a light breeze because it was top-heavy and very unstable. 60% of the price of the boat was for the excessive decoration.

We did this and by chance ended up in Nora, which is quite a famous town here in Sweden, being one of the 3 towns with the best-preserved wooden houses. There are several very old businesses here including the ice-cream shop that was stared in 1920 and the kitchen shop, where Frederick is the 5 th generation proprietor.

We made the 182 km trip to Copenhagen into a 323 km day by really taking the small single-track roads. This was until we arrived near to the coast at Landskrona when we did take the secondary road north to Helsingborg.

We arrived at the ferry to see 4 bikes tearing up the lane number 2 and onto the ferry. As we drove up lane 2 they closed the gate! Good thing the next ferry was only a few minutes. The crossing is about 15 minutes and costs (gulp) 19 Euros each. Arriving at the dock in Helsingborg we could see a huge black rain cloud over the city. We had planned to take the long way around the coast and in fact missed the storm.

Then it was a visit to Christiania, which is a self-proclaimed autonomous neighbourhood inside the Christanshavn area of Copenhagen. It has been a source of controversy since its creation in a squatted on military area in 1971. Its cannabis trade on Pusher Street has been tolerated by authorities, but is gang run and really has nothing to do with the people who live in Freetown. This is a very creepy area with guys in ski masks hiding behind army camouflage nets selling weed. No photos allowed of course.

Setting out south from Copenhagen we had a great day at 24 degrees and slightly cloudy. There was almost no wind. We made the ferry at Gedser in good time after 155 km.

Here you can just ride up and get a ticket. There were about 15 other bikes here as well. The lashing points are pretty good. They space the bikes out at designated spots along both outer walls, where there are permanently attached ratchet tie downs that secure the bike to the wall and the deck.

The crossing was very calm on the 2-hour trip.

From here we headed east to the island of Rugen Germany. This was just a scenic stop that was not too far from the ferry in case we had issues and arrived later in the day. We set up camp and then took a tour thru the national park. The storm in the night was incredible. It was pouring, like build an ark pouring and the thunder and lightening were deafening.

Luckily for us it stopped in the early morning so we could pack up in the dry. We then backtracked to the 20 and rode south and west on the dreaded highway all day in 34-degree heat to get to Berlin.

Our green card insurance runs out this week and we need to renew at ADAC. They are the only agents who will do this now. We arrived to the huge ADAC office near the Mitte zone about 2. The agent informed us that there are no ADAC offices in Berlin that sell green card insurance since the end of 2014. The nearest offices are more than 100 km (in almost all directions) away.

AGH! Well what can you do? So melting in the heat we made our way to the hotel we had booked near the Tiergarden. Driving up the main road we rode up to the Victory Column. This commemorates the Prussian victory in the Danish-Prussian war of 1866. As we rode up the street a truck pulled up next to us and the passenger yelled out to us with thumbs up “Welcome to Berlin!”

After some cold showers and aircon we ventured outside. Near our hotel is the Kaiser Wilhelm memorial church, which was heavily damaged in bombing raids in 1943.

We walked about 5 km thru the gardens, past the Victory Column, (which since 1864 has commemorated the Prussian victory in the Prussian-Danish War), and to the Bundestag or parliament with its glass -domed roof.

Next we headed to the nearby Brandenburg gate. This is one of the original 14 gates to the city. This 18th-century arch is one of the best-known landmarks of Germany. Out front of the gate you can see 2 lines of bricks that mark the location of the Berlin wall that divided the city for almost 30 years.

The memorial to the infamous Nazi book burning in 1933 is in front of the University Library. The picture does not show it well, but the Plexiglas covers the opening to a white room lined with empty white bookshelves with space for 25,000 books.

This is an example of a “ghost” station on the subway. When the wall was up these stations were not open for access as the trains running here were West Berlin cars that passed under this area in East Berlin. They did offer opportunities for escape to the west however.

We visited the site of the 1952 workers uprising at the last standing of the 3 rd Reich buildings. Being practical the Germans did not tear down this massive building, but repurposed it as a Government office, but of course all insignias have all been removed. The side walls still hold the propaganda painting from the Socialist era.

We walked by one of the 3 remaining sections of the Berlin wall. The wall was erected in 3 stages. The first was razor wire and wood, then bricks. The last phase was concrete in an L shape so you could not drive a car thru them. Here there is a memorial to those persecuted and murdered by the Nazi regime. The red brick walls are the remains of the basement of the SS prison cells.

The wall surrounded West Berlin, but there were a number of checkpoints. The only one that could be used by military personnel and tourists was the checkpoint “C” or “Charlie”. It is now a tourist attraction manned by German actors in USA uniforms.

For our last day here we decided to visit the Memorial to the murdered Jews of Europe. There is a very moving and informative center under ground. The displays are very centered around the individual stories of people and families. Above ground the memorial consists of several thousand stellae of various heights.
