This afternoon the guys unloaded the luggage and set off for some riding on the dunes. Dan is an expert with his 450 Yamaha, but this was the first time in the dunes with the 800. As Orvar says Daniel is a pretty incredible rider.

Ride to Roots

It was nice to meet up with Eduard and Simona from RIDE TO ROOTS for dinner tonight and to get route advice for some off road riding from an expert in Morocco.

N'Kob and the PIST

Today we headed to N’kob in 225 km, but opted to start via the pist and to ride along the dunes.

Yasmina Lake

Our friends had suggested a stop at Yasmina Lake. This is a lake formed by rainfall and is seasonal. The road is a bit sandy in spots. The only marker to the turn off is this small sign.

Cascavel Portuguesa

On the road west to N’kob you head 10 km west from the town and there is an unmarked track to the right. This leads to the Cascavel Portuguesa. This was built to contain water for irrigation. Now you can drive thru the opening in the wall and up to the spectacular viewpoint.

We did initially think we could make it on the track straight thru to the waterfalls, but the river it way too high on April 1. Dan got himself a little stuck while scouting around. We backtracked about 2 km and then asked a local farmer if this track led to the next town across the river (i.e. a bridge) and it did.

Sara did have an issue with the bike not starting, and this may be from the fan needing to be on in the heat and not enough speed to charge the battery that is not charging perfectly. Luckily Orvar still had some water for us and we could jump start the bike. Also luckily we were just about 200 m from the end of the sand and about 5 km from the pavement.

From here we had another 110 km to Boulamaine Dades. Our Kasbah was up on the hill across from and with a great view of the town and the sunset. We decided to stay here two nights to get a bit of a rest.

On our rest day we did a short ride in the afternoon for 20 km up the R 704 and into the Dades Gorge. We just rode up to the mirador or viewpoint and the lower gorge, since we will be riding back down the upper part of this road the next day.

The 45 km short cut that took 6 hours

The plan for today was to ride up the Toudgha gorge across the connecting “road” and down the Dades gorge. After that the plan was to back track to Ouarzazate and then go north to Ait Ben Haddou in 408 km.

From here we thought we had it made since it was only 16 km more down to the pavement, but here is where it got really hard. We were more often driving down the riverbed, which were large rocks at times. Poor Dan had to ride some of the more tricky parts TWICE!

The worst part was at times where the road was not washed away it was quite good, but around the next corner it was even worse than before. Like all these things where the route was really hard and the going very difficult we did not stop for photos.

We finally saw a 4 WD vehicle after here so at least the way was passable! We were mostly riding in the riverbed as the road was washed out. There were some stretches with large rocks to ride over and lots of just riding down the river.

When we got 4 km from the road we met 2 guys on big bikes, who by the way turned around when they eventually saw what it was like the way we had just come.

https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8755/...6cd92959_c.jpgIMG_1350 by Worldwide Ride.ca, on Flickr

When we were 1 km from the road we made a left on the track and not a right across the river and Daniel almost made it thru that way, but ended up buried in the deep mud. Thanks to Bramed, who was “guiding” the other bikers as he helped us to unsuction the front tire and drag the bike back to the dryer ground.

Sara’s bike was having issues again and now would start, but stall in first (side stand sensor) we flicked the stand up and down a few times and it worked. Later we saw that the side stand sensor must have been damaged after hitting all the rocks. As well as one of the bolts from the side stand was sheered off making it unusable.

Cut the brown wire

When we got to the viewpoint it would not stay running. Lucky Dan had read ADV Geeks and we had been joking since we left Vancouver about “cutting the brown wire”. We removed the sensor, took apart the connection, cut the (center) brown middle wire, and reconnected and installed the sensor. Voila bike running!

We raced the sun and made it almost back to Ouarzazate by dark. We hate riding in the dark. The road north is on the main N9, but the last 10 km was on a road paved only in the center, which made it a challenge when there was oncoming traffic. We had reserved a hotel on bookings (as we do in Big cities, tourist towns, or when we may be very late in the day) and had the GPS coordinates. When we arrived at then GPS location the hotel was not of the name we had booked at. We checked next door and the owner said she had never heard of this property. So we checked back at the first place. The guy came out and we showed him the name and he said that is their booking.com name and he had our reservation. Long story short both were lying. The first lady owns the hotel next door to the one we booked at! The second guy did not have our reservation! Bookings is sorting it out for us.

We backtracked 10 km to the highway for gas and then thru Ait Ben Haddou again to go on the back roads north to Marrakesh in 180 KM.

The road is initially paved and snakes up into the mountain past several remote villages. The center section is a good hard packed (when dry) dirt road with only one real river crossing.

The first day in Marrakesh we walked down the wide Paris like avenues and to the Medina thru the main gate, which is the mot picturesque and then to the main mosque. We had a strange incident on the way to the gate. Walking towards us on the 5 m wide pedestrian walk was a man dressed in white robes, with a white Moroccan hat and a long white beard. He was caring a lap top case ans seemed to be just strolling along. When he was about a meter from Orvar and Daniel who were walking just behind me he suddenly vered towards Orvar and almost chest bumped him in an aggressive manner and walked away. Very weird and a bit unnerving. The other locals looking on were also shocked at the man’s behaviour.

Oukaimeden road

The plan today had been to go 160 km north east to visit the d’Ozoud waterfalls and drive back. The forecast was for rain so instead we decided to just hang out and rest in the city. This gave the guys some time to work on the bikes also. For Dan this was to get the rocks stuck in my bash plate out. While he was doing this he found that 3 of the bolts were sheared off. Again this was from the hell road after bashing poor Lulu over the big rocks for 6 hours she is a bit busted up. Lucking he had 2 spares.

Today the sun is out again and we are headed south to Taroudant in 294 KM, but we will take the scenic route with a detour to Oukaimeden.

This then climbs up again to the summit of the Tizi n Test pass. This road is listed for some reason as unpaved and dangerous on the map, neither is true. From here you snake down the mountainside on the switchbacks.

Arriving in town we did not have anything booked. The first place we looked was in the Medina, but was a bit sketchy. We drove out to the main road and stopped at a fancy and expensive Kasbah and asked to borrow their wifi. From here we found a camping place that had nice tents right beside the 500-year-old city wall. The owners were nice enough to steer us thru the streets to the main square and it’s restaurants.

Leaving Taroudant we decided to go 179 Km to Tafraoute, a town which was recommended by a couple we had met on the road yesterday.

Western Sahara

This is a far south as Sara is going. The guys have decided to go south in the desert in to the disputed territory of the Western Sahara. The conditions of the roads, the 30 km “dry” lake crossing, and the last of gas will make this a challenge she does not want. Fun for the guys, not so much on LuLu, especially in deep sand.

The guys headed south 82 Km to Assa to fill up on gas. They had heard there might not be gas south of here so they filled up the jerry cans and a few water bottles and then picked up some provisions.

There are apparently land mines and “other” dangers. They turned back and then tried to make their was south of the off road route listed on the map….This “road” does not exist.

Tan Tan

Today we need to get west to the coast. Initially we rode 64 km and tried to find the off road cut off route from the town of Taghjijt that goes between the R 102 and the N12, but no such luck. From here we continued to Guelmim with view of the low hills or anti-Atlas. We had a peak at the coast at El Quatia and then headed back to Tan Tan for the night after 320 KM.

Sidi Ifni

From here our goal was to get to Sidi Ifni in 252 KM. You can do this on the main road, but we decided for and off road route. The first leg was on the pavement, but there was a 50 km cut off to the Plage Blanche. We did start down this road, but turned back after 5 km after we decided we did not want to fight the sand all the way there. There is a paved road to the beach slightly farther north and so we made for this.

From here we started back towards Guelmim, but then took the off road cut off towards Sidi Ifni. 90 % of this road is good hard gravel, but there are a few steep and very rocky sections and the last 200 m to the pavement is very steep very rocky and narrow.

Now we are finally on the “coast road”, which is almost never right on the coast, but you do have some views of the ocean. Sidi Ifni is a small port town where we found a cheap hotel on the sea with great parking. The best part was the hotel sold wine and beer.

Essouria

From here our day was north and along the ocean for the most part. When we left the sea and went up in the hills it suddenly looked like we were back in Spain. We did get to see the famous Moroccan goats that climb trees to eat the foliage.

Mohammadia

Headed north again we were on a mission now to get the ferry in 2 days time so that we can arrive back in Marbella on Sunday for our tire oil changes booked for Monday morning.

We had to get past Casablanca for sure and to do this we did take the toll road to get past as fast as possible. We made for Mohammadia in 391 KM and the camping L’Ocean Blue.

This is a very nice clean town on the water. The people here are the friendliest we have met.

The pricing here is also much lower than the rest of the places we have been. They do not seem jaded here at all by the tourists. The guys stopped for a proper shave for 2 Euros.

Arriving at the dock you show your ticket at the gate and then proceed to “check-in”. Here you get your ticket. We arrived at 10 for the 12 ferry. You then proceed to the gate and show your ticket. Next you drive following the Auto Access signs to the second gate where you are given a tourist card to fill in. From here you go to the police booth, where they want your passport and tourist card. The next booth is customs, where they want you TVIP. They stamp it and give you 1 copy. Then you follow the signs again. There is a huge X-ray machine for vehicles. Stop before this and the agent will open the gate so you do not go thru the machine! Then proceed to your port number. Here there are an incredible number of big trucks loaded on to the ferry. You show your ticket for the agent to scan. When boarding the police will again check your passport.

The crossing takes 90 minutes and so we had time for a nap in the sun. We were not sure what to expect with immigration and the customs for the bikes after our experience at the Madrid airport. Technically there should be no issue. We Drove off the bikes and followed the signs to the exit. You are stopped at passport control where they scan your passport. They continue to follow the exit signs. “Welcome” to Europe!

He has a 1200 and wanted to give us a tour of the city. There is a massive festival here in April called the Feiria de Avril. Basically the city “lives” casa’s in the fair. They dress in costumes and party day and night for an entire week. Jose managed to talk the police into letting us into the restricted area with the bike so we could get a photo at the “gate of the fair”.

From Tavira we rode 170 KM along the coast, which here in Portugal is not a coast road as you see say on the west coast of the USA, but it slightly inland and very built up. We stopped in Albufeira, but it is really not that nice a town. The beach to the south is more scenic.

There is a large fort here at the point that in the past was to protect the city from raiders from North Africa. It is more of a wall that closes off the 60 m cliffs than a traditional fort. The huge sundial is read from the top of the ramparts. The locals are actually fishing from these cliffs.

Cabo San Vicente

Further west 8 km from here is Cabo San Vicente, which is the most south west point of Portugal and where it was thought “that land ended” before the discovery of the “new world”. The lighthouse is built in 1846 on the ruins of a 16 th century convent.

Espargal

We had been invited to the home of Annette and Tony in the tiny village of Espargal. To get back the 150 Km we did take the highway to get back faster. They are the parents of Neil who we had met at the ferry to Victoria this past summer. Neil and Franziska had spent the summer crossing Canada and were headed south. They are currently in Ecuador. We had a lovely night out at a local place with a number of their friends. The villagers still uses the Roman well here.

Headed north we took the tiny, curvy small roads to end in Evora in 195 KM.

This is a 2000-year-old town that is a warren of narrow cobble streets inside the ancient walls. There is a restored Roman ruin on the hilltop. We had a nice couple of nights camping.

Lisboa

Instead of the short 132 KM trip from Evora to Lisbon we decided to again take the small roads for 227 KM and ended up in 146 KM at Troia, which is the tip of a peninsula.

Like a lot of big cities Lisbon has the tourist hop on hop off buses. We had never done this before and spending the day doing this was a great way to get an overview of the city.

New luggage that does not leak

We arrived to Modesto’s apartment where he had stored our new chains and sprockets and our NEW BUMOT PANNIERS!

First we needed to get the old racks off. Several of the crappy screws were stripped on one side of both racks and this meant actually cutting the rack off with a grinder.

Opening the boxes from Bumot we were so stoked to see what great build quality the racks and panniers had. The hardware is stainless steel. The panniers themselves are very attractive. The lid system opens out so that the top lies flat and can be used as a shelf. There is no chance it will slam on your fingers (and kill the nail on your thumb like Daniel did on the first moth of the trip). There is no stupid wire holding the lid half open and that gets caught all the time when you are closing the lid (and no white screw knob to hold the wire on that falls off regularly). The top has a rubber gasket so they will not leak like sieves and soak all your gear like our old boxes did almost from day 1. They are really well designed and constructed.

Next we headed to the workshop of Modesto’s friend Javi to cut and install the chains and the sprockets. The DID chains we had put on about 60,000 km ago have lasted very well, but are now done.

North to the UK

We finally finished up and left Madrid at 6 pm. We managed to get 167 km north before we had to stop for the night. These are the less glamorous times when you have to do highway time and its raining.

Getting up in the morning it was pouring and this continued all day. We rode north again trying to get on and off the highway to avoid the tolls. Near the border of France the road signs are in Spanish and Basque. Welcome to France!

The fastest way from the coast is to get the ferry from Le Verdon-sur Mer to Royan, which stays on the coast but saves driving the long way around the inlet.
