We went for a drive along the waterfront where the surf must really come up as there is sand on the roadway at least 500 m from the sea.

The big reason Sara had wanted to come here was that a few years ago on TV she saw a documentary that included a piece on Laguna and how the dolphins here help the local fisherman to catch fish. They herd the fish towards them and then jump up to signal the men to throw their nets.

Today we had a 150 km drive north to the island of Florianopolis. We took the long way past the Lagoon, where Daniel plans to get in a bit of kite surfing. Then we headed to the north coast where we had a place 40 m from the beach with a great view.

Morretes

It is HOT here and humid. It is only pleasant out at 8 am and after dusk. We are so glad we went with light colored suits and helmets for this exact reason. Today while riding it hit 38 plus the humidity. We headed out of Blumenau and north to Morretes in 225 km. This involved a short stint on the 101, but mostly on the secondary roads.

There was also a short ferry ride, which offered quite a nice breeze! The ferry loaded from the side and so it was roll on roll off for sure.

Arriving in the town or Morretes we were very hot and while I was looking for a hotel, Dan was chatting to some locals who also have an 800 GS. We settled for the place on the river, mostly because it was the cheapest and had air con. We were practically melting by now.

It poured rain all night and so we followed the advice of riders Tomas and Claudia who we met in Quito. “ If it is raining just stay another day and go tomorrow”. So we did that and wow is it so much nicer and cooler today at 17 (94% humidity). We decided to do a little canoe float down the now very full river.

Ha I remember watching the very same documentary.

We had a similar experience re: the included breakfast with our first hotel in Mexico last weekend. We're used to the anemic "continental" breakfasts in Canada and the US, our hotel in Hermosillo had a smorgasbord of yummy dishes lined up on the morning. It was quite the contrast.

Today’s 347 km may have been the most epic entire day of curvy mountain riding EVER. It included what is though to be the most scenic road in Brazil the Rodovia da Graciosa as well as the state park of Petar.

The rain earlier in the day did make the brick sections a bit slippery. The road is lined with rhododendrons in bloom. The PR 410 ends at the highway 116 and so you do have a 20 km stint here on the slab until Quatro Barras.

Claudinei and Fatima’s home at the beach is ours for the rest of the week as they must return to Sao Paulo to work. They left us the apartment, a fridge and freezer full of food and beer, and their pedal bikes too. Today we went for a ride and saw the firemen practicing helicopter recues. Lucky for us there is an oasis or Kiosko every 500 meters for some shade and a cold drink.

The BIG city of Sao Paulo

We headed from the beach into the city of Sao Paulo or more accurately Sao Bernardo where our dear friends Claudinei and Fatima live.

We are going to one of the most visited places in Brazil the city of Ouro Preto. It is one of Brazil’s best-preserved colonial towns and is a UNESCO site. Ouro Preto means “black gold” and was founded in 1698 as the center of the gold rush and in 1720 it became the state capital ( it had been nearby Mariana). In 1750 it had over 110,000 people making it one of the largest cities in the Americas. At the time it had twice the population of NCY and five times more than the now massive Rio de Janeiro.

All this lead to the city being the site of the first uprising for independence from Portuguese rule. The revolt was lead by Tiradentes in 1789 after he realized how much of the region’s gold was going straight onto boats to Portugal. The revolt failed and Tiradentes was arrested and dismembered. His body parts were then displayed along the road to Rio. His head was placed in what is now known as Praca Tiradentes or the main square.

By the end of the 19 th century the gold had run out and the population plummeted. Because of this there was a lack of new consruction and thus the colonial architecture was preserved. Restoration began in the 1950 and still continues.

The draw here for tourists is the architecture and especially the churches. They contain many carved sculptures by Antonio Fracisco Lisboa or Aleijadinho (little cripple), who is one of the countries most famous artists. He was a master of the "baroque", but was slowly disabled and probably by leprosy. When he lost his fingers he is said to have strapped tools to his hands.

The view of this small city is stunning. We stayed on the hillside opposite to enjoy the view and avoid too much driving on the very steep windy streets some of which have very large cobbles. A few of the little alleyway streets are at an incredible angle and are very rough. We did however ride over to the main or Tirandentes square and then explore the city on foot. There is a church in almost every direction you look.

There was a small bar just before you enter the old city and the small square across the street was crammed with tables and people. This was the action spot on a Wednesday night. Here we enjoyed some beer and food and the local style of Karaoke with different guys playing the guitar and singing. The bar is the new gold mine here.

Mina Chico Rei

Today we visited on of the old mines. This was about 1.2 km walk, but lucking not all up hill. The Cathedral in under renovation.

This mine’s tunnels and hand forged. The conditions for working here were unpleasant with the low roofs and the noise must have been incredible. Chico Rei or King Chico was another legendary person in Ouro Preto. The story is that he was an African King that was captured and enslaved to work in the gold mine. He apparently stashed small pieces of gold in his hair and saved enough to buy his own freedom and then the mine itself. He used the profits of the mine to buy the freedom of all the slaves.

The difference is the lack of tourists. Here also there are steep cobbled streets. You can visit the Cathedral for about a dollar and climb to the bell tower.

Getting out of the city like all of these places is a bit stressful on the cobbles, especially in traffic, since they are much more challenging at slow speed and on steep hills. We were headed across to Morada Nova de Minas, but it was not very nice and it was raining so we pressed on at 5 pm to Paineiras.

To get to the ferry you go off road, but the road has been moved. The GPS takes you to the old road, which is now a sand road, but luckily we turned back since who wants to drive 30 km of sand only to have to turn back and do it again. The new road is just about 3 km back and is a good dirt road, whuch is an incredible red orange colour.

We did have two bits of excitement today. The first was Dan was driving along admiring these 2 huge stork like birds in the ditch on our left, when one suddenly took off and flew right at him. The bird exploded like a bomb of feathers on impact and pushed back the metal bracket on the right auxilary light all the way back and onto to the faring and at the same time cracking the faring.

Rio de Janeiro

We were sad to leave our friends in PG, but its time to start getting north. Today we are riding to Rio de Janeiro. This is one of those exotic places we have been dreaming about going since we were kids. We had been invited to the home of Paulo and Elizabeth. We had met Paulo in Chile at the end of February when we were at the small Puerto Fuy ferry dock. It is amazing how these chance meetings turn into such awesome opportunities for us to experience places with local knowledge.

We headed off on a cloudy, but hot day. This was all highway to get the 543 km done.

The best part was the 5 min of pouring rain, since we were very cool for the next 45. The worst was the 90 min we were stuck in RdJ traffic at 42 degrees. Even with lane splitting this was torture. Finally we got the 14 km long bridge and some breeze!

This guy in front of us was honking and waving his I phone at us. It took me a while to see he had a Canadian Flag case for it. He is Brazilian, but wanted to tell us how much he loved our country.

We had to stop at the first place to get some rehydration. From there we had a great view of the city and the famous Christ on the mountain at Corcovado.

Today we had a mission to get brake pads for the 800 GS and oil. Our first stop was BMW, where they wanted 550$ for pads that we can get at home for 120$. We then managed to get rear pads at Honda and the fronts at Yamaha about 200$ total. After several hours of running around we toured up the coast to Barra de Guaratiba for a lunch of Crab cakes and shrimp Pastels.

On the way home we stopped at vermillion beach to watch the worship of Yemanja Goddess. The Umbanda religion is a Brazilian religion that is a blend of African traditions, Roman Catholicism, Spiritism, and Indigenous American beliefs. They worship the Goddess Yemanja as one of the 7 spirits of God. She is the patron of fishermen, fertility, and moonlight. They send a boat filled with flowers to sea for her.

We spent the day at the beach near Paulo’s house in Itacoatiara. It is normally deserted, but this is a holiday week and so it is packed. We did get some reprieve at the neighbourhood beach club.

We had the opportunity to stay in the city in Urca so that we could experience a Rio de Janeiro New Years at Copacabana beach. From the apartment we had a view of the Christ at Corcovado and the tram at Sugar Loaf.

It was just a 45 min walk to the party zone. Here on New Years eve millions of Cariocas or “inhabitants of Rio” all dressed in white gather on the beach to party, watch the fire works, and throw white flowers into the sea as an offering for good luck in the new year.

Arriving at the beach we made for the main stage, where there were live bands playing and hundreds of thousands partying. The crush of people was incredible. You can really only take this for 20 min and then we retreated to the street to watch the people!

Our friend Paulo has lived here most of his life and says that neither he nor anyone he know has been a victim of the sort of things we all see on CNN about RIO! We were a bit apprehensive to come here, but really this is just like any other large city. There are some dangerous areas for sure, but we felt safe day and night in most places. We did have a “real Rio experience” when on the beach about 25 cops were chasing and caught a kid who had grabbed a necklace from someone’s neck.

Near 1130 we walked down to the shore farther from the stage where there was a more family atmosphere.

Buzios

Poor Dan had to do the oil changes on one of the hottest days we have had, luckily the guys at the local service station let him use their bay so he was inside in the shade. The worst part as usual was to get the bash plate back on Lulu. Since she is so low it has been whacked by thousands of rocks and speed bumps and is warped. With two of us and a metal pry bar we managed to get the bolt into the worst bent area on the right rear.

Now we are ready for a Paulo day ride of 340 km to Buzios, with stops at Saquarema, Arrail do Cabo, and Cabo Frio. This was a long day and so we ended up riding the last hour home in the dark and the rain.

Corcovado

We got up at 630 to drive over the Niteroi Bridge to beat the morning traffic and go 57 km to be at Corcovado when it opened at 8. The traffic was not too bad, but finding the unmarked road to the park from this side of town was a challenge even with the GPS. We missed the tiny road exiting the 4 lanes of traffic and we then got stuck in tunnel traffic trying to back track. Ultimately we found a bricked switchback road back over the hill and then to the bricked Paineras road up the mountain in the Tijuca Park to the “Paineras hotel” ruins, where the shuttle busses leave for the summit.

We wanted to see the view, but also the iconic 38 meter Statue of “Christ the Redeemer” at the top the peak. It is one of the “New” 7 wonders of the world. It is constructed of reinforced concrete and soapstone and was made between 1922 and 1931. It has been hit by lightening several times and suffered damage.

Guarapari

Well we finally have to leave our home at Paulo’s in Itacoatiara and head north. Our visa runs out February 16, and we have a lot of ground to cover. We have changed out plans and instead of driving the extra 3200 km from Salvador de Bahia to Fortaleza and then Brasilia, we will drive to Bahia and then Brasilia and fly from Brasilia to Fortaleza and Manaus. This allows us time for 13 days in Cumbuco the number one kite surf location in the world and 5 days to go to Manaus for an Amazon boat trip.

Step one is get the 1700 km to Salvador in 5 days. This is in 34 plus heat on 2 lane roads, with an amazing amount of truck traffic = slow going and long hot days. So glad we are flying some of the north now. Today we are making for Guarapari in 471 km.

Guarapari

We left from Paulo’s house with instructions and the best route to take to avoid the city and the terrible traffic. Our ultimate goal was the highway 101, but we took the 106 and then cut up on the Ubatiba road at Marica. Driving along the 106 we were speeding a bit, but so was everyone else. These 2 Policemen on motos came up behind us and passed us. About a km later they suddenly flipped on their lights and signaled us to get over. The funny part was they almost clanged into each other and then into the car passing in the right lane while trying to do this. Long story short the reason they pulled us over was to ask where we were going and to tell us that this was not the 101! They thought we were lost. I assured them by showing them our route on the GPS to show that we were turning in 9 km to go to the 101 on the small local road with no traffic.

Taking some of the beach roads you find a few sections of dirt roads.

We left Paulo’s at 830 and arrived in Guarapari after 471 km at 530 hot and tired. The town is very nice and is on the ocean and our hotel was on the canal.

Teixeira de Freitas

Today is just about getting north as far as we can stand in the heat and with the amazing truck traffic. We aimed for Teixeira de Freitas in 418 km. We experienced the moto lane at the tollbooth, which actually seems slower and a pretty tight squeeze. There are so many moto clubs here in Brazil. When you get gas often the attendant will ask you for a sticker for their collection. We made good time and arrived in time to enjoy the pool at a Posada we found right on the 101.

Porto Seguro

We did not have far to go today at only 230 km to Porto Seguro, but it still took almost 4 hours due to rain and long lines of trucks to pass. We did get lucky a few times with road repairs and were able to get to the front of the long lines before the traffic was allowed to go in our direction.

"Discovery of Brazil" 1500

When it finally cooled off at about 6 we could ride up to the historic center. In 1500 Pedro Cabral landed just 16km north of Porto Seguro at Coroa Vermelha and this is said to be the first Portuguese landfall in “Brazil”. They just stocked up on supplies and left. Three years later Gonçalvo Coelho arrived and his men planted a marker in what is now Porto Seguro’s Cidade Histórica.

Itacare the back way

Today it was 374 km to Itacare, but on the back route. You know those days when your GPS says go right, but the map says there is a road north to the left, sometimes it does work out. We headed left and north despite the “make a U turn” on the GPS and the guy at the gas station telling us to go right.

Itacare the back way

The road on the map was north and west from Santa Cruz, but when we got to the edge of the town there were no route signs at the round about. The GPS was no help and neither was the English-speaking guy who stopped to ask us if we needed help. There were 3 roads bricked coming off the round about. The left looked like an alley, the middle looked major and went up the hill to the city hall or so the sign said, and the last looked major, but seemed to head more north than we wanted to go. Picking the middle we drove around the dirt roads in what looked to be a subdivision, and then backtracked to the “alley”, which it turns out actually becomes the “highway” BA 683. This is bricked initially, and then paved for a few KM before it is packed sand and for us raining, but you are soon back on the pavement.

You then connect to the BA 275, which has short dirt sections at both ends and a bit of a maze of dirt roads in the middle section. Here we just stuck to what looked like the most main dirt road and finally we came to a roundabout with a sign and headed for Itapebi and the 101.
