G'day Jeff, I'm an Australian (in my 62nd year) planning to ship my bike (F650GS twin) to Buenos Aires, Ar, end of November this year. Plan is to head south to Ushuaia then basically up the Pan Am to arrive in Deadhorse AK in July 2012. I'll be joined in the US with dos companyeras de motocicleta. I plan to track via Altanta GA to see my daughter, son-in-law and grandson, and stop by in Seattle WA to visit friends. My timing's probably not co-incident with yours, but I thought I would let you know what I'm up to anyway. I cannot help much with trip logistics or linguistics as I'm basically a novice; however, I did spend six weeks in Ecuador last year trying (not very successfully) to learn a bit of Spanish. cheers, John

same plan
High folks,
We are 2 Belguims and we are planning to make a trip from SA - Canada (or as foar as the money brings us) . We will arrive around Chrismas in Buenos Aires with a boat from Grimaldi-lines (Antwerp - BA: 4 weeks). Maybe we will catch up with some of you, in real live or on the HU. We don't have much of a plan, because we want to think about it in the 4 weeks on the ship as well as we will learn spanish in that time. :confused1: I'm riding a BMW 1200 R, but I just bought a nice secondhand F 650 GS for the big trip. Johan is riding a Honda 750 CB and still don't know if he will go with this one or buy an other one. Some advice? see you |

My original thoughts involved riding both ways, but my conservative nature implored me to PLAN to ride one way (south) and fly back (from Buenos Aires or Rio). IF you WOULDN'T be heart broken if you DIDN'T get to ride both ways, maybe we should consider shipping to an Atlantic port and riding home. Regardless of what you decide, we should keep in touch. I plan to be in Ohio in July (to attend the National Matches at Camp Perry and the Vintage Grand Championships in Lexington) so maybe we could meet, break some bread, and revel in our wanderlust. Hey y'all. I could probably be talked into a SA trip...I have NOT been able to find a suitable means of getting a moto to SA from the USA...unless a 20' container is used. If anyone has better info please share it. I have a 91 R100GS, traveled throughout Mexico several times plus belieze ,Guatamala...would really like to visit SA. 64 yrs old in excellent shape. Doing the Inca trail hike in Sept and RIM-RIM Grand camyon June. Not interested in camping. Rather stay in low-moderate hotels. I live in the Phoenix area. I would probably buy a used KLR650 for this trip.....I have also heard that you can sell your moto in Uraguay...that would sure make the logistica easier if this is so.

I'm thinking I'll ride back to SA again, starting this October. I got back from Ushuaia last June, rode across the US last Fall and got back from a month of riding around New Zealand in March. Plan to go up to Alaska in late June stopping by the Calgary Stampede in early July.
I'm now in Los Angeles area, speak Spanish, have done this ride recently, and ride a DR650. I'm another senior at 65. My last trip to SA was mostly solo, but wouldn't mind some company. motomon/Chris, 661-476-4248 |

One recent fly in the ointment is that I buggered up my left knee trekking in Vietnam and might require surgery. Went for an MRI tonight in fact. Should know shortly. Not thrilled since I had ACL reconstruction on my other knee last fall and it's not even back to 100% yet, so I know what the recovery period is like. One summer with next to no riding :(. Aging is not for sissies. I'll keep checking in folks with my fingers crossed. |
Heading South
I'm also thinking to head back south again this September or October. I'm on an '06 DR650 and am 65. I got back from riding from California to Ushuaia and back last June, so I may be able to help and/or join up with some folks.
On my way back north, I met another motorcyclist in Panama who was heading south. He had been robbed twice in Guatemala, both times were with guns. It seems like it would be safer to travel in a group, although my trip was solo for most of the way. Chris Brown |
