Latest news is that the list of presenters has just been updated. There’s a stack of new presenters lined up. Zebb Penman, James Davis, Bruce Porter, Tony Ingles, Jasper Ditton, Anna McNuff, Patrick Cruywagen, Elaine Clark, and Tiffany Coates.

We are going to be spoilt for choice! Whatever you want to learn about or be inspired by, we think the amazing list of presenters will help you out!

And while here we would like to thank Adventure Spec, Code Audio Visual, Touratech, Continental Tyres, Cotswold Outdoor and Pure Bike Tours for their help with sponsoring space at the HUBB UK. Their help is why we've been able to keep the fee for HUBB UK passes at the same rate for three years running! Thanks everyone! :thumbup1:

Sam Manicom 12 Mar 2014 10:44

Now here's a request that some of you guys will be interested in methinks. It comes from the guys at The Adventure & Travel cinema, who are going to be with us for the first time.

The Adventure & Travel Cinema was set up as an attraction for adventure and travel shows throughout the UK. The primary idea is to give people an opportunity to show their film work to a wider audience for free. We take full length documentaries but also short films.

Many people have some amazing adventures but don't get enough footage to make a full documentary and we feel people are missing out on some great stuff! We hope this cinema will give people the opportunity to see these films and be inspired! If you know of anyone who might have a film to submit for the Cinema, either long or short, please let us know. tom@geekmedialtd.com

I had an email this morning from a chap I've not met yet. He asked why I go travelling when there's so much to see in my own country. I have to agree with him but perhaps he ought to be coming to the HUBB UK. Then he'll find out why we all buzz about travel. I've invited him and sent him this shot from Vietnam to be going on with.

I've just been looking at some of the shots from last year. This one's from the start of one of the heats of the Slow Bike Race. Did you have a go?

John and Chris will be running it in a very similar way to last year. Heats of smaller cc bikes and larger cc bikes. Then a ride off between the winners from those categories.

A right laugh! Anyone else got a shot they like from it? If you have a look at the footage on the HUBB UK 2014 page you'll see some of the race happening - some surprising contestants too! :innocent:

ROAD KILL COCK OUT 2014
Hi folks it's that time again to come and try some great wild food and if you really want to know, find out what you ate last year?

Yet again we have sourced some new meat for you to sample with the great Fil 'Smoking' Schannini transforming it into an amazing taste phenomenon! Once again we would like you to guess the animal only this year we have saved the skull to help you identify it!!!

This year's other delicacy will be wood cock, better known to country folks as a timber dick. This is cooked intact (no gutting required!) to keep it succulent and give it a great flavour. We'll even teach you how to catch them in the wild!

The fire this year is planned to be even better so come and have a go at making homemade bread; could be useful when you're on your travels? Of course we will have all our usual guests ....... trout ,squirrel ,venison, pigeon etc and we will always welcome any new visitors that you want to bring to sample but please remove any micro chips first as they can chip your teeth!

Now for this year's competition we will be keeping it a secret until the last moment ( it will stop you clever people practising!). Come and sign up at the Cook Out area so you don't miss out and be in with a chance to win a free holiday to Haggs Bank Bunkhouse.

WOW we will have music both nights, and Saturday night will be very different! Come and join us for drinkbeer, some food and just a great time round the fire, it's a great meeting place to catch up. :funmeteryes:

Remember our motto 'no pet is safe!'

Danny and Fil

Fantastic!!! Just 70 days to go. Have a look at the HUBB UK page. New presenters are up!

And it's still just £65 for the four days if you book and pay before the 12th of June. This is the same rate for the third year running and that is in spite of all the inevitable rising costs. :thumbup1::thumbup1::thumbup1:

Thanks very much to the companies who have helped us to achieve this by stumping up some loot to sponsor the different areas of the Donington HUBB UK venue.

The companies do deserve a word of thanks for helping to make this happen. So, Adventure Spec, Code Audio Visual, Touratech, Continental, Cotswold, Pure Bike Tours and new in, Rev'it! Thanks to you all!!! :thumbup1:

And while posting. Some more brilliant news. Kevin Turner is going to be joining all the authors and film makers and is going to be launching his brand new book at the HUBB UK.

Did you know that The Donington Park Farmhouse Hotel – the venue for the HUBB UK again this year – has a really good Green Ambition? :thumbup1: Check this out and you’ll see what I mean. Just another reason to feel good about us being there! And some history about Park Farm too:

‘Park Farmhouse is part of what remains of the Donington Estate, which was broken up after the army returned it to the Shields family in 1956, having taken it over in 1939 for the war effort. Donington Hall and the race track were no longer viable and had to be sold off.

It took seven years to clear the scrap metal from the rest of the land before it could be used for Agriculture. What was able to be salvaged has now been moulded into what we hope is a sustainable and inter-dependent enterprise.

The Deer Park is now larger & contains some 350 head of deer. This is a truly wild herd, with no human intervention allowed. All the venison is butchered and used on the Estate. The park is a SSSI, which means that no chemicals or fertilizer are applied to the land. The park is famous for its collection of ancient Oak trees and the invertebrates that live in them. All new trees are planted from our own acorns, and the park is actively managed with the help of Natural England.

The 150 acres of woodlands are managed under a 20 year plan with the Forestry Commission. The idea is to produce a sustainable supply of timber to heat & supply hot water for the entire Hotel complex through a district heating scheme, replacing 9 existing boiler systems which currently use oil & gas. The boiler house is now completed and the first phase of the scheme has proved successful in July 2012.

In 2010 we acquired the field opposite the Hotel. In this we have put a septic tank, which replaces six existing tanks, which will be converted to hold surface water for the gardens.

We have built three reed beds, which filter the Hotel dirty water, returning it to the Spring as clean, usable water. They are also a haven for wildlife.
In 2011 we installed 46 solar panels, which now provide daily electricity for the function and conference barns. We also appointed new waste contractors, and now not just the glass, but all our non-food waste is re-cycled.

The Hotel itself is run with practical green policies in mind. There are plans to replace all lighting systems with LED lighting in the future and to compost all of the Hotel’s food waste.’

And that's why when you arrive, you'll be handed bags for your waste. One for stuff that can't be recycled and one for everything that can. We can all do our bit too! :thumbup1::thumbup1::thumbup1:

Sam Manicom 14 Apr 2014 13:15

Great news. The word is spreading. One of London's leading motorcycle online magazines have picked up on the HUBB UK and are helping to spread the word. The editor has been before. Like it. :mchappy:

You can read the article HERE

Sam Manicom 14 Apr 2014 13:38

And there’s more good news! It’s on the Motorcycle Skills Course this time. :mchappy: Cogs Underwood and David Lobb set this up for the first time last year and I must say it went amazingly well. That’s in spite of having to move the whole thing due to the naff weather we had for the set-up days, which left their course too wet to be used! In typical HUBB UK spirit loads of people mucked into help the guys move it. Good stuff!

Skills Course? Well there are plenty of courses that are aimed at people who know how to ride a bike but want to go to the next stage off road etc. This course is aimed at those who have recently passed their tests or are simply not experienced bikers. For example, those who still worry about riding across a bumpy wet camping field. I remember that – I fell off. doh

Cogs and David and their crew set up corrugations, slaloms, fake ruts and all sorts of more simple challenges in a loop in Skills Course and Slow Bike race field.

The idea being to give the less experienced motorcyclists the confidence they need to go to the next stage. If you have a go, you’ll have experienced people walking the course with you – speed isn’t the point. It’s taking it easy and learning how to deal with the different obstacles that matters. It works! A couple of the people who went on the course are actually out riding around the world now. Fun!:thumbup1:

And today we’ve been informed that Gabe Bolton (Tuareg Rally rider and MD of Zen Overland), and Ollie Lloyd (Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge ride and Owl Racing contender for the Paris Dakar!) will be on hand for a few hours to help guide people around the course.

Both Gabe Bolton and Ollie Lloyd have exhibitor pitches in the Adventure Travel zones. It’s great that they are happy to be away from their stands to give a hand. Please do get to their stands to say hello if you don’t happen to be with them on the course. :thumbup1:

Ollie is with us all because he knows how many people in the world of overlanding love to follow the Paris Dakar, be they fans of the 4x4s or the bikes. He's coming to share the fun with us. Like it!:biggrin3:

Sam Manicom 15 Apr 2014 08:41

New stuff?

Over the coming weeks we are hoping to be able to post information about some of the Exhibitors who are going to be at the HUBB UK. If you know a little about the companies in advance then you are going to come armed with the right questions for them and with an idea of the overlanding kit or expertise they can help you with. :thumbup1:

The first up are Bush Mechanics. But who are they? What do they do? This is what they say:

‘Bush Mechanics inspires the vehicle dependant traveller and teaches them skills so that they can rely on themselves and their vehicles to reach their destination, even when travelling in remote areas.
“Aut viam inveniam aut faciam” – “I will either find a way, or make one”

The Principles of Bush Mechanics

1) Preparation is key to destination
It is vital that you know what to look for when choosing your vehicles; that you understand your
vehicles and know how to maintain and repair them; and that you know what equipment to take with you to do so.

2) Prevention is better than cure
Vehicle servicing and maintenance is paramount to the vehicle dependant traveller, as is good vehicle handling.

3) One road leads to another
Understanding the anatomy of a vehicle leads to understanding how your vehicle works which leads to the ability to fault find.

4) Correct diagnosis is the first step to recovery
Knowing how to fault find i.e. knowing what’s wrong with your vehicle means you can make a repair and / or proceed with care or call for the correct assistance.

5) Necessity is the mother of invention
When there is no other option but to get your vehicle going again yourself, a little confidence and inspiration can go a long way towards enabling safe improvisation.

6) Mend and make do only as long as necessary
All field repairs, should be taken to professionals as soon as is practical’

Bush Mechanics run training courses for people hitting the long road. From the sounds of it a lot of fears can be laid to rest and lateral thinking abilities are going to be enhanced. Perfect.

‘Bush mechanics training provides an understanding of how to keep your vehicle going safely.
It teaches a respect for ones’ vehicles and has a strong emphasis on practical knowledge and wisdom above technical skills. Where proper resources and facilities may not be available, it inspires people to solve practical problems using sometimes unconventional and inventive techniques.

Bush Mechanics has training premises in Devon but can operate globally.’

You’ll find the guys from Bush Mechanics on their stand in the Adventure Travel Zone towards the Orchard – that’s where you’ll find Danny and Fil’s Road Kill Cook out and the live music on Friday and Saturday evening.

Sam, do they offer insight into ALL vehicles? Their site seems to suggest 4x4. I've tried to find somewhere to learn more about my bike (I'm not at all mechanically minded!) locally, but to no avail! I'll certainly pop along if they do! :D

You are right, they are 4x4. However, it'd probably be worth popping down for a chat as there may well be lateral things you can pick up from the guys. Good blokes by the way. As for bikes, I wonder if any of the motorcycling exhibitors are reading this and would like to take this on board? :mchappy:

I do like this guys 'Just do it' mindset. Real have wheels can do anything and go anywhere type of thought process. I do get the feeling that a visit to the HUBB UK would have stood him in good stead though...

No doubt if you've been to the HUBB UK before you'll have seen the quality of audio visual kit that's being used. It's set up by a company called Code Audiovisual and the boss himself, Gary, is such a fan of the HUBB UK that not only are they one of the sponsors but he comes and gets his sleeves rolled up in the presentation rooms too. Thanks Gary bier

Of course, when you see this bit of footage and you find out what Gary and his friends get up to, then you'll know in part why he gets such a buzz out of being at the HUBB UK overlanders event.

Watching the footage, one of the things that struck me was how, like the TRF, the guys were so careful to go where it was legal to do so, and how they respected the other people they met. Good stuff. Smiles all round methinks :thumbup1:

Firstly, thanks Sam for keeping us updated on the latest news. I can’t wait!

Got back last weekend from my trip across Asia - Russia, Mongolia and the 'Stans (which I departed for just days after HUBB UK 2013 - my first time to the event). Had an awesome time (despite being a biker of the pedal kind).

For now, though, I’m sorting out all my photos from the Siberian winter (which are mostly of snow, trees, my bike and a few frozen selfies!) and it’s getting me all excited for putting together photos from the whole trip for my presentation at this year’s event.

So hopefully see some of you there this year… on my new motorbike! Yup, that’s right, I’ve seen the light and have upgraded to a motor (getting lazy in my old age). You see, a lot can change between 2 HUBB events…

BTW - my book Desert Snow (One Girl's Take On Africa By Bike) is available at the current reduced rate (only £2.98) for the kindle version for only 2 more days. Bargain if you've not read it yet! Otherwise I'll be bringing some paperbacks and soon-to-be-published hardback limited edition version to HUBB if you want a signed copy :) sorry - us self-published authors have to squeeze in a plug whenever we can!

Sam Manicom 18 Apr 2014 09:09

Fantastic to have you with us again Helen, and many congrats on your trip. Can't wait to hear more about it, and to see some of your shots. What a major thing to do at any time, but in winter!!!

Congrats on the bike too! :mchappy: You do realise you won't be able to eat so many bananas now, nor so much pasta :innocent:

And your plug? Of course you can. Tis a travel book isn't it. And for anyone who hasn't read it, this book is in my list of favourite travel books. Well worth snagging a copy!!! :thumbup1:

Want to know more? Check out this review I did of Desert Snow - intriguing title eh...

Let those who ride decide

Thats me + 1 booked for my first HU event bier.. I will be arriving on my new RTW KLR 650..(1990 vintage just new to me) her build is nearly complete..

If any peeps need a ride to and from the event starting out from Lincoln drop me a line. I have two machines, (Sisters) with the intention of having multiple travellers flying in and out during the RTW on bike two. Sounds complicated I know. But if you need a bike to get you too and from the event the offers there, you just pay fuel…

beer

Sam Manicom 24 Apr 2014 07:32

Great stuff. Looking forward to meeting you. Very cool offer too! Wonder who will take you up on it.

Hunt out Graham Field when you are at the HUBB UK. Both of you are fans of the KLR 650s :mchappy:

Sam Manicom 24 Apr 2014 09:52

One of the things we'll be doing over the next weeks is introducing the various Exhibitors who are going to be joining us at the HUBB UK.

Some, you'll know very well, some will be new to you. All are coming so you have the chance to get to know them and what they do rather better than you can when you see them at more usual mainstream shows. :thumbup1: There's no time to really talk at those is there.

Have a look at the HUBB UK page and you'll see the full range of companies.

All specialise in either supplying overland and long distance touring kit, or helping those who aren't so lucky as to be able to hit the long road (yet) :innocent: to experience some amazing parts of the world.

Who are Stahlkoffer? They tell us:

We have now been in existence for seven years. We manufacture bespoke motorcycle luggage for the global adventurer.

Our panniers (manufactured in the West Midlands) can be tailor-made to our customers specifications and are manufactured to the highest standards using 2mm aluminium, powder-coated inside and out. Our latest design means panniers are “quick-release” and the mounting system is simple but extremely robust and efficient.

Not only do we make panniers but also roll-bags, tail-bags, crash bars, engine protectors and side-stand extenders as well as many other accessories too many to mention.

Everything is sourced wherever possible in the West Midlands and we do not buy anything in from China or the Far East. - thereby promoting the saying “local jobs for local people”.

All our products are functional in design and pitched at the right price.

Ride a motorcycle? When was the last time you changed your own tyres? Most people I ask that question of can’t remember. Why should they? Buy new tyres and the garage puts ‘em on most of the time.

Of course when you hit the long road it’s a skill that’s very handy to have. For years, Grant Johnson has been running training courses on tyre care, repair and changing, and this year we are lucky that he’s up for doing his session for us. If you don’t already change your own tyres, then you ought to get to this presentation. Hmmm, even if you do, you might learn something useful…

Endurodude 25 Apr 2014 11:35

At the risk of making myself even more technically useless than I might otherwise be, I'd be particularly interested if these sessions included actually getting the wheel on and off the bike, as well as the tyre part! My bike has all sorts of exciting cables that daunt me with the thought of having to remove / replace; in fact, the tyre changing part seems the easiest bit!

Needless to say I've not yet done it - I'm sure it would be easy having repeated it a few times! :innocent:

Dust off the cobwebs........

Hello HUBB people.

The lovely Kristina and I have volunteered to present our practical camera workshop again for all those who are interested.

It would seem stories are a big theme with any travel group so I am posting a few very short visual stories. I want stories to be one of the outcomes people can start to get to grips with.

So the "Tent Story" is a very simple short story:

I met this man who told me how much he liked his tent, he also explained how he fitted it all into his boxes and the poles into a box tube near the right rear indicator

Well impressed I was.

(if you know him could you post his name please)

So the breakdown will be a focus on getting to grips with your camera.

The exercises are simple enough, but will help you to have a greater appreciation of getting better outcomes of the photos you are already taking.

Sometimes one photo can tell the story, sometimes it is a series of photos.

I did this photo a day blog last year (never missed a day) and there are many stand alone images telling stories and many groups of images telling stories.

:thumbup1: Good question. When I've seen Grant do the session in the past, he has had a bike on hand which he has extracted the wheel from. I don't know what bike he has lined up this time but even if it's not the same as yours you could have a word with him. Or Trix who is one of the Crew Leaders on the Gate Crew and you'll have seen in the last few shots from Ken. Having said all of that, you'll quite likely find people with bikes such as yours who are absolutely happy to share knowledge. It's part of what the HUBB UK is about. :thumbup1:

I'm looking forward to seeing who comes in what this year. These shots are just a very small selection of some of the guys.

I've got this public talking thing down now... well at least I don't shake as much as I used to. Last year I was supposed to do a webcam presentation live from Iraq but the connection went, so having composed a presentation in my head as I rode through Eastern Turkey I found myself with no one to tell my tales to. This year I won't be relying on internet I'll be telling about the trip that lead the the new book Ureka that comes out in May. As well as Iraq and Turkey it covers The Cuacaus region and my new favourite country Georgia. Looking forward to telling why I loved that diverse country which is only the size of Ireland so much.

So the "Tent Story" is a very simple short story:

I met this man who told me how much he liked his tent, he also explained how he fitted it all into his boxes and the poles into a box tube near the right rear indicator

Well impressed I was.

(if you know him could you post his name please)

Ben & I were there last year on my Trusty Super Tenere XT1200Z Called Mr T
Here's the write up I did on my Blog HUBB UK 2013 Donington Park Farm

And just for you here is Mr T's Tent Pole Storage Tube. Complete with Sticky back plastic.

We had a great time and loved the Masai Dancers

It just so happens I sold Mr T at the end of last year to return to my beloved Honda CBR1000RR FireBlade & so will be carrying a far smaller tent this year along with next to no luggage!

I hope you have a great 2014 HUBB Meeting folks.

The Great Game: Central Asia Overland

Hi All,

I'm honoured to be asked to speak at the HUBB UK event. Here is a few details about my upcoming talk.

http://bigoadventures.funkhauser.co....1736.jpg?w=300

In 2013 I attempted a solo overland journey by vehicle across Central Asia.

Through a previous trip to Afghanistan, as part of the first ever cricket team to tour and play the national side in 2009, the seed was planted for the expedition across Central Asia. I always wanted to return to Afghanistan and play another game of cricket (something I successfully achieved at the beginning of June 2013).

I was also inspired by Peter Hopkirk's books covering the history of the last 200 years, I wanted to visit the area immortalised by The Great Game. I set out to explore present day Central Asia along the former Silk Road routes, retracing the steps of the players and the historical events of The Great Game. Through the interaction with the local people, cultures and landscape, my was aim is to compare and contrast the historical version with modern day Central Asia.

Travelling from London to Russia I planned to join the Silk Road and head east to China though the "Stans" north of Afghanistan. Then head south via Laos to Malaysia in South East Asia. After shipping the vehicle to India I headed west via India, Nepal, Pakistan, Iran, and Turkey and finally Europe to London.

I want to share my motivations for the journey. Starting from a position of no experience in overland vehicle journeys to completing the a 30,000 mile journey through some the worlds biggest trouble spots. Discovering that Central Asia isn't really as the dangerous a place the media regularly portray it to be. I'll be giving some insight to how the region has been impacted by the worlds superpowers over the course of the last two centuries. Sharing the ups and downs of this amazing adventure and showing that anybody with the desire to take on a challenge like this can do it. Through a mix of serious, not so serious and downright amusing stories, I'll share my adventure.

I hope you'll call come along and check out my story.

Jon

Crikey, all sounds utterly wonderful

Wish I was going.
Wish I had a working bike
Wish I had some working cash (I assume Monopoly money won't be accepted?)
Wish I had a working brain so I could present something and get in that way

Wish I could be there, but if I can't then I
Wish you all the best! :)

I've just been having a conversation with Grant about what he's going to be doing, and your query.

He's going to be concentrating on the tips and techniques for changing tyres themselves. Grant's not going to be using a bike to remove the wheel from as part of the session, as all bikes are so different.

However, he's hoping for there to be time to have a discussion re the specifics of removing wheels. So, bring your questions, and if you are reading this and have knowledge, please bring your tips for this discussion. :mchappy:

For those of you who didn't make it to the HUBB UK last year, here's a shot of the Author's and Film maker's marquee in the courtyard. The courtyard is surrounded by the red brick farm buildings, and is home to the outside sitting area for the bar, the area for the supported charity - this year its ShelterBox - and the HU Store for T-shirts and DVDs etc.

Last year we had 11 travel Authors and Film makers signed up to be with us. This year the sign ups are looking good already and 1 new book at least is going to be launched there. The ideal opportunity to have a natter with the authors and makers, and to snag signed copies. :thumbup1:

Thanks mate. If there's any way I can get there, I will. Otherwise it'll be the second time I've missed Ted Simon!

Also I know I'm gonna be tied up around that time (late June) for the next couple of years, so it's this year or bust as far as the near future is concerned - (unless you happen to change the dates in future years)

Who are Adventure Spec Ltd, the HUBB UK main event supporters?

The company was established in September 2007 by Dave Lomax and Chris Colling. Both mad keen adventure motorcyclists they had little luck in finding a reliable source for the essential kit they required for real independent off-road travel.

The plan was simple; if a suitable product was available locally Adventure-Spec would stock it. If a suitable product was available abroad Adventure-Spec would import it. If a suitable product was not available Adventure-Spec would manufacture it. Finally, the idea wasn't just about what was sold, it was about the way it was sold and the knowledge base of those who sold it.
Today that plan is well on its way to becoming reality. Adventure-Spec products are tested almost 365 days a year by riders on expeditions, races and trips all over the world. Product development and acquisition continues daily and each newly stocked piece can be bought from one of the most advanced on-line shops in the industry, and if you need advice about products you can call and speak to riders with expert product knowledge and a ridiculous passion for their subject.

Chris and Dave say, ‘If we like it we use it, and only then do we sell it. That way everything we sell can be certified ‘Adventure-Spec’!

Don’t forget to click on the Adventure Spec link on the HUBB UK site for the full gen.

Excellent Pat. I've been working away all weekend and have only just seen that your registration is through. It'll be great to see you again! Love your graphics string by the way. Much of HUBB UK summed up with no words :thumbup1:

Sam Manicom 6 May 2014 10:12

There's excellent news in! Background first though. One of the things the HUBB UK has done since the very early days is to raise money for a charity. The charity has to be appropriate for overlanders; something we can all appreciate or connect with. Past charities supported have been for example, Motorcycle Outreach (MoR) and last year the Prostate Cancer charity. The latter one because well, most of you will know how badly this cancer hit Grant a couple of years back and of course, many people who come to the HUBB UK are in that dangerous age bracket. Grant by the way is doing amazingly well and is looking forward to being with us all again this year.:thumbup1:

So who is the charity this year? :confused1:

It’s an organisation called ShelterBox. These guy pack up emergency equipment for those people who have been hit by a disaster. It might be flood, a war, a Tsunami, and earthquake and so on. They work all over the world and are often one of the first agencies on the ground with their boxes of kit – tents, blankets, cooking equipment and so on. The basics you’d need to survive if you’d just lost everything! Many of us have travelled or will travel through the areas where they help. Have a look at the link to find out more. We aim to help them to ‘Put a lid on Disaster’.

Why am I posting all of this?

Because this year the charity raffle prizes are going to be huge! :D

Not only do all the exhibitors at the HUBB UK very kindly stump up raffle prizes but outside organisations are helping too. And they are doing so with some magic prizes.

Get this, the Adventure Bike Shop have stumped up a £500 tent! And Turcano Urbano have sent in 6 jackets, 3 pairs of gloves, a back protector, 4 pairs of shoulder armour and more. Amazing!!!

Have a look at the HUBB UK page to see who else is so kindly sending in raffle prizes. Brilliant!:clap::clap:

New to the HUBB UK this year are Front Runner and they have a secret recipe that makes up who they are.

FRONT RUNNER SECRET RECIPE:

*1* Take a handful of friends who are engineers, designers, outdoor enthusiasts and professional off-road drivers;

*2* Add a shared history of adventures into the wilds of Africa spanning 40 years;

*3* Toss them into a factory in South Africa with the very latest technology and materials, together with CAD (Computer Aided Design), in-house laser cutting, CNC milling, bending, cutting, punching and powder coating;

*4* Let them simmer, dream, design, build, test, sell, travel, and evolve for 13 years, as they grow to become the world's premiere vehicle outfitting company with offices in South Africa, Australia, Europe and the United States.

The most advanced, versatile and widest range of vehicle based adventure travel accessories available on the planet are best served at sunset. In nature. Where the air is fresh and the views are breathtaking. Now in the UK with a network of approved dealers, fitting centres and overland advice and consultation. Come and see us at HUBB UK, see our demo vehicle and speak with our customers too!

Maybe a stupid question.
How and where can I charge my cellphone or netbook at the HUBB?

:helpsmilie:
Ok I can charge onboard at my KTM but this will only work if the engine runs using my hmm "plug socket??".

Another idea: using a very long distance cable from home :innocent:
or a shorter one on the camp ground?
(have to buy one then)

Sam Manicom 9 May 2014 17:08

Not a stupid question Tabbi. May I say, discretely. And do keep an eye on it while its charging. Overlanders are an amazingly honest lot but...

A couple of days ago KateandWill posted the brilliant news about the Dover to Donington ride with Grant and Susan. This is just a quick update on that.

The Dover to Donington ride is being organised by the July, Simon, Kate and Arun from Moto Adventure Nights, and Touratech De. That link is to the 'getting the word out' work they are doing. You’ll be joining a bunch of riders over from mainland Europe – various countries! :thumbup1::thumbup1::thumbup1:

Meet at the docks in Dover at 10.30 on the 18th with departure being at 12. Please note. You will need to sign a liability disclaimer before you can join the ride so please allow plenty of time to get there and sign that before departure. The A1? It really is the longest road in the UK. Didn't know that! Fun coming up. :mchappy:

Presentation dilemma

7 Attachment(s)
I've been busy hopping around in the last year or two, so I offered up a choice of two presentations for this years HUBB UK, and as the time draws nearer with silence from the over worked organisers it looks like it is up to me to make a decision :-)

Maybe event goers can help by letting me know which presentation they prefer ?

The choices are (both is not an option) :-)

1) Pegless to Peru - (practical and informative presentation)
=====================================
The presentation will cover aspects of buying a bike in Chile, why we (my wife and I) chose Chile instead of other countries and the problems we encountered.

* Bike issues and the failure to enter Peru after a month in Bolivia, and then running out of money.
* All the usual fun of finding parts to fix a broken bike
* Fuel trouble in Bolivia
* How to explain why you are carrying a dead dog in the back of a broken down van on the Pan American.
* meeting (local) people (when the bike breaks down) and making friends.

Generally a "you can do it to" type presentation.

2) 2 Prats (a RTW adventure in 91 days)
=========================
More of a "boys own" get out and do it.

How we (myself and a friend, Mike) had to rush across the states to catch a ferry

* What happened when that was cancelled.
* How to cock up bike paper work so that you cannot ride in South Korea.
* Meeting the Hells Angels in Vladivostok, and being adopted (we sometimes thought kidnapped) by them.
* Doing the "banya" (and Vodka) in Chita
* Dealing with the heat in Kazakhstan (and major breakdown in the desert).
* Why I actually did the trip in 64 days and Mike in 93.

As you know young Samuel, (It is ok for me to call you Samuel, isn't it?), I used to ride a certain marque from Germany, as you did (and still do)

Remember Brooklyn Bridge in 2000? The skyline is sadly now very different.

http://www.thebrightstuff.com/picsFo..._Bridge_NY.jpg

In the intervening years I deserted the marque and went elsewhere, but now I have returned to the fold and am again a proud owner of a BMW (actually it's just a rebadged Aprilia...).

Seemingly, since the turn of the millennium, the marque from Germany has attracted a new crowd who sip lattes at Starbucks and wear special riding suits. So I thought, as HU welcomes all sorts of people, this group should be made more welcome than previously, where they just got instant coffee from a serving hatch in a dining room.

Just a thought :cool4:

I wouldn't eat at MDs, but for the coffee and the wifi they have become a haven across the world in recent years.

But as you admit, it is an Aprilia. I took great pride in pointing out the "made in Italy" under the tank as I dragged mine across Bolivia.

Forget the coffee I've just realised that HUBB UK is taking place during the World Cup!!!!

Serious question: will there be anywhere on site where world cup matches might be shown? A spare room with a TV would do. Or maybe at the bar?

This is of great import!!!

Sam Manicom 13 May 2014 08:16

Well, frankly, I’m really sad to see a post on this thread that takes the p**s out of people who are interested in travel, however they make it happen. I think Mr Bright should stop being such a cynic and appreciate that one of the beauties of overlanding is that each person can do it the way they would like to do it. Be it round the world, or the length of a continent, or a ride from London to Scotland for the first time, it’s actually doing it that matters. NOT what you ride or what your kit is.

For me, I get a buzz when I hear that anyone is planning a trip, whatever they are planning to be on. I’ve seen plenty of people on the road who are wearing the right kit for safety and riding a bigger bike. And they have been having a ball. The right kit? If it keeps you safe and you feel comfortable in it, then its the right kit.

I’ve also met people travelling on Vespa Scooters, Honda C90s, DR 350s, Africa Twins, Tenere and Tigers and everything on up to the big mile eating bikes that are so popular now. And why should they not be. Some people travel off road at every opportunity and some people stay on the more beaten track. Both ways are right. There is no right and wrong. Chris, you are a very unusual character in that you get far off the beaten track and you do need particular types of bikes to do that. Many people don’t have the same aims for their trips and many people can't make the time to head out that you can. So they enjoy their riding the way they can. Why not encourage everyone to hit the road in whatever way they can, and not try to make a section of the overlanding and travel community feel small.

It doesn't matter how you travel. Bicycle? Small bike? Big bike? Expedition vehicle? What matters to me and I think the greater majority of people who are on HU and go to the HUBB UK is that it has wheels and that a person goes. Great world this.

As for the coffee? I drink latte every chance I get. Love the stuff. I also drank the coffee that the hotel put on last year. It was really good! I’ll be drinking more this year for sure. :thumbup1: Oh and yes, I ride a BMW. She has 275,000 miles on her now - 220,000 of those being travel miles. Nuff said. :mchappy:

Who is the next Exhibitor at the HUBB UK to let you know about? Zen Overland. Who are they?

Well, they supply ‘high quality after-market accessories for off-road and adventure motorcycles’. They also carry out custom fabrication projects, and produce their own range of products.

The business was started in 2010 by Gabriel Bolton, about the same time he returned to the UK from an 18 month, 50,000 mile round the world trip. As a design Engineer by trade, it was a happy transfer from drawing up parts for industry and aerospace, to adventure bikes.

They say, ‘Zen Overland has grown fast over the last few years, and in early 2013 we moved into much larger premises. This has given us the chance to display most of the products we offer, and the increased workshop space has enabled us to take on more custom fabrication jobs.’

As well as selling bike stuff, they also ride, a lot!

Gabe was extremely privileged to be part of the latest Austin Vince adventure; Mondo Sahara. He has also competed in the Baja desert race, took the road of bones to Magadan, and competes in UK rally, enduro and trial events.

'If you need something for your bike that no one else seems to offer, please do get in touch. We’ve done all kinds of projects, for all kinds of bikes.’

Sound good? Check them out at the HUBB UK this year.

I’ll be drinking more this year for sure. :thumbup1: Oh and yes, I ride a BMW. She has 275,000 miles on her now - 220,000 of those being travel miles. Nuff said. :mchappy:

I must apologise Sam. I assumed that all those reading this had a sense of humour. I must assume less in the future. The liberal use of emoticons should have been a clue. Where/what I ride and what I do is not better/worse/different to anyone else interested in m/c travel. But thanks anyway for singling me out for allegedly being a cynic and different. I'm not.

I was assuming (sorry) that only those who only ride their shiny bike, clad in their shiny suit in order to pose at Starbucks might take offense. As these individuals would never attend a HU event anyway (aimed at people who dream of driving/riding any 4/2/1 wheeled vehicle, interested in travel: Starbucks riders aren't interested in anything but posing at that hot beverage serving American franchise), they would never read this thread anyway, so there'd be no fuss.

Sorry for my part in allowing a fuss to be made.

PS. I spotted the offending video on a BMW GS website. Everyone was laughing at it over there.

PPS. + 1 for finding a telly to watch the footy.

I personally vouch for top quality service from Zen Overland... Everyone should come and see the stand.

I'll most likely be helping Gab out on this stand so if anyone wants to slap me with a wet fish, that's where I'll be. Please cue orderly though ;)

Margaret

If you zone out the trade stands and talks by people flogging stuff, there's more time than you think, particularly if you're interested in footy. (I'm going to be accused of cynicism again  )

What an excellent idea. I don't drink coffee, so to get my caffeine, I need tea. Great to chat over a cup of builder's tea. Must remember to pack my stove.

Lets move on to overlandery positive things now shall we :thumbup1:

Thanks Sam, much appreciated. Never thought two of my big loves - motorcycling and football - would clash like this :)

And as befits world travellers like us, I'm not just talking about England games; in fact I'm keener on watching some of the other sides!

Anyway had a look at the schedule and the affected games (with times) will be:

Thurs 19th
17.00. Columbia v Cote D'Ivoire
20.00. Uruguay v England
23.00. Japan v Greece

Fri 20th
17.00. Italy v Costa Rica
20.00. Switzerland v France
23.00. Honduras v Ecuador

Sat 21st
17.00. Argentina v Iran
20.00. Germany v Ghana
23.00. Nigeria v Bosnia Herzeg.

Sun 22nd
17.00 Belgium v Russia
20.00. South Korea v Algeria
23.00. USA v Portugal

Some mouth watering ties there featuring countries that many of us either hail from or have been to and love.

Really hope something can be sorted out with regards viewing. If you need volunteers to help get it sorted, and hold the remote control, deal with the hooligans etc count me in. ;)

Hi Bruce,

Let me know by email which one you decide to go with :)

Thanks

Iain

A cunning plan is being hatched. We'll update you when we have something sorted. :)

On the current level of votes (1), that will be the RTW and alcohol blackouts then :-)

Sam, Sorry about this moan on the site, I hope not to offend anyone but - - -
I know a lot of people think football is the be all and end off of sports, go to matches and watch it on TV at every opportunity, please give the majority of people who do not like the game a break and dont allow TV's blaring Football matches all over the site.

This meeting is about bikes, travel and excellent stories / presentations.
If you are condoning the world cup on a telly in the campsite or where ever anyone is thinking about having a TV during the event, I for one will be seriously P - - - - D off Sir! ?c?

Sam Manicom 14 May 2014 07:47

Hi seisobs,
No worries, I don’t think you’ll offend anyone with the post and you aren’t coming across as moaning. Politely passing on your thoughts - cheers. So, the cunning plan? IF we can make it work then the aim is to have the footie area tucked away in a quiet corner for those who are interested. I do hope no one is planning to have TVs blaring on the camp site! That wouldn’t be cool. If it happens then hopefully neighbours will give ‘em a nudge.

As far as Iain and I are concerned, we do all we can to make the HUBB UK into an event that everyone will find things of interest to get involved with. That’s the beauty of it being the size it is and at DPFH. Space isn’t a frontier. :biggrin3: I know some people don’t go to any of the presentations at all. They come to the get together as a chance to meet up with mates and meet other people who have the same aims in life. Others aren’t interested in the exhibitors, so don’t go for a looksee. But every year we are asked for more companies to be there, so we try to oblige. One friend told me last year that he keeps coming back because he's fascinated by what people do with their wheels - he was in heaven last year with all the bikes and the exped vehicles :yes:And of course many people are there mainly for all the amazing presentations, and that’s what they fill most of the hours of each of the 4 days with. Ha! Might even get into some myself this year! I suspect that most people come for a little bit of everything - I know that's me in that slot.

But the footie, because we have been asked a number of times, we are working on a corner for those who’d like to watch a match or two too, but in no way will it take over. Its early days on this, and we may not be able to organise anything at all. Trying though.

Too right, the HUBB UK is about travel, and excellent stories/presentations, meeting people, swopping advice and tips, and generally a great chance to learn in its unique atmosphere. That’s what Horizons Unlimited is all about eh. :thumbup1:

The Fire Drums this year are in a new much more sheltered area, and much bigger! You'll find them in the Orchard along with Danny and Fil's Roadkill Cookout, and the music on Friday and Saturday night.

Bikers/overlanders like football too :-( I have watched more games overseas than in the UK in recent years.

But I agree, we do not need it blaring out. There is always a pub somewhere nearby that can do that :-)

*Touring Ted* 14 May 2014 11:07

I'm a big footy fan. I've had amazing experiences watching games with foreigners all over the world. A great icebreaker. Do we want it on a big screen at a hubb meeting... NO. Discreet room with a telly sounds harmless to me.

Endurodude 14 May 2014 11:46

. . . and there's always the record button at home! Yes, you might already know the score, BUT if it's a good game, you'd watch anyway, surely, if that's your thing?

Anyway, I agree with Sam. Bits of everything's my thing too! Some of the 4x4 vehicles were excellent last year (I ride); I had some great conversations! :thumbup1: Really looking forward to the smorgasbord again this year :D
