Jamie

You can't buy a one-day pass, you'll have to buy for two days - or rather one-and-a-half days as Sunday will only be a half day of events. Never quite worked out why one-day passes aren't available but that's how it is.

But yes, you can just roll up and pay on the gate. That's what I'm planning to do assuming I have enough money in my pocket on Thursday.

Pongo 17 Jun 2014 09:37

S'going to be a long haul from SW France:innocent: ...O.K. I'm cheating!!

All being well and with a fair tail wind will be touching down around tea time Thursday. Looking forward to meeting everyone.

P.S. What's the weather forecast?? HU T shirt and shorts ?? :Beach: or full wet weather gear?? :rain:

Wednesday - Cloud, 17C
Thursday - Cloud, 18C rain in the evening
Friday - Sun and cloud, 17C rain in the evening
Saturday - Sun and cloud, 18C

If it doesn't quite work out like that then complaints to the BBC weather people please.

Bon voyage.

Yeh weather seems to be mostly dry but cloudy with some sun and the odd shower. Typical summer weather really, covers all angles. Cooler than it has been in the UK these last few weeks so may be worth an extra blanket at night

Just a quickie for Iain - we met briefly at AO a couple of years ago and you suggested I give a presentation at the Hubb in 2013 but I had to do a couple of trips to Corsica on the dates in question and missed out.

At the last minute I'm joining the guys on the Land Rover Classic Campers stand on Thursday with my SWB Mini Camper and am happy to talk to anyone interested in hearing about my 45 years working in Adventure Travel in Africa and Asia. Looking forward to the craic....

Still looking dodgy as far as me going is concerned. Not enough cash in my pocket at this moment, so unless I can beg, borrow or steal...

On the off chance I can make it, what's the earliest I can arrive Thursday morning? I'd quite like to get there dead early and pitch up before the day starts.

Dunno if Sam or Iain are still checking this thread...

seisobs 18 Jun 2014 15:30

Bike packed ready to go

Just finished packing the Bike, didn't know she could carry all that stuff, amazing.
Volunteered to be a toilet cleaner, how sad is that - Who cares I'm still looking forward to it.
A request, I work on a ship and my nickname is Chainsaw, (Seisobs on here) no one will share a hotel room with me on crew changes because my snoring is that bad, do you have a snorers corners, preferably in the woods.
Anyway, leaving Stirling at 11 tomorrow morning, if anyone sees a GSA with a Scottish flag on the back, I wonder who that is.:scooter:

Oh well didn't make it in the end, just wasn't affordable for me no matter how much I scrimped.:frown::helpsmilie:

To all those going hope you have a great time and the weather's kind:Beach:, and have a few for me. :funmeteryes:

Unfortunately I'm tied up during mid-June to July for the next few years so won't be able to come along for the foreseeable future (unless it's ever scheduled at a different time of year) but hopefully there'll be mini-meets and other events I can get to, so all is not lost.

Still ain't managed to see Ted Simon, that was my main reason for trying like a lunatic to get to this year's. Ah well, life's rich pageant and all that.

All the best

Pongo 22 Jun 2014 08:09

Just spent two warm and sunny days at Donington, and now recovering a bit after an intense trip. I must take my hat off ( ''Chapeau'') to all the organisation for the huge effort and professional way the whole event is organised, and the the army of volunteers who just make things happen. A special thanks to Sam Manicom for being patient with my questions whilst he was in constant demand.
The presentations I went to were excellent and well attended, and the outside bar was already under pressure on Thursday ( thirstydoh ) night bier.

I must also thank everyone I met on the stands who give freely of their time to help me formulate ideas for a HUBB meeting in France 2015, especially Grant and Susan; Sam Manicom; Ted Simon; Paddy Tyson and Overland Magazine; and the volunteers at the sharp end for invaluable hints and advice.

oldsomeman 22 Jun 2014 15:31

Thanks for all the organisation and hard work for this event, I enjoyed all the speakers i heard and the few conversations i had.
I think for m e its not my place as although friendly I am not forceful enough to introduce myself aggressively to all. Also i realised that riding overland will never happen..although i wil get out and about locally if i ever get a chance to get this bike on the road..only been waiting since last October to Mot it!
One lesson i learnt was not to sleep in a van on the car park as not camping meant i missed out on all the banter and friendship of passing folk,,,,,but at least it did give me time to think and to realise i shall never wander the world....not least due to cost and home commitments , This does not mean i didnt enjoy the great presentations and wonder at the bravery and endurance of some of you guys out there.Or the humour shared and the realisation that many things we all have in common as riders of the world.
To be honest i got bored after and in between events, and not being a big drinker or lover of loud music man there was little to do after 8 pm,,,,but i do have a low threshold if not occupieddoh But it was so wonderful to see friends reuniting and finding time to rejoice over a beer or two!
Once again thank you for superb planning and the hard work of the helpers.....they always had a cheerful word when i met them!Thank you to for all the great speakers who helped to make it interesting and worth listening to.
I shall stay on here but who knows one day when I am 80 i might get to follow my desirebier
Ps how can it be a quiet camp area when huge jumbo jets roared over from 4,30 am till some 10,30 at night:confused1:

Just rolled in after my first ever HUBB meet, a great weekend, weather certainly helped and great to meet loads of old friends and I made a few new ones too!

Not so sure about the early morning alarm call by Ryan Air but otherwise a fantastic site.

Toilets and showers good, beer cheap, food a bit pricy but I supoose you can't have everything bier

Before the weekend I was thinking about two offers I had received last week, one to go and ride the Tuareg Rally in Morocco next March and then a couple of days later an invite to go to Morocco in October (the perfect Rally Recce) but still wasn't sure.

After this weekend I was sufficiently inspired that both need to go on the agenda, in fact I told so many people I was going to do both trips I guess there's no backing out now :helpsmilie:

Thanks to everyone involved

Thanks from the Roadkill team

Thanks to all who came for the Roadkill - it was great to see so many people getting hands on this year, not only because it saved us a lot of work :wink3: but because it's really what the whole thing should be about.

The new location worked really well for us and I hope we managed to get back the 'party' feel that veteran HUBBers will remember from Ripley.

A massive thanks to Danny & Family without who the Roadkill simply couldn't happen and wouldn't exist. I'm simply Danny's terrapin (apologies, it's an 'in' joke!)

Thanks also to 'team Yorkshire' who failed to see the flag we put up in their honour but who provided great company and made me laugh like I haven't done for a long time.

Look forward to seeing some of you again at the Mini Meet at Haggs Bank in September where I will be remembering to go to bed occasionally and to not drink the sloe gin.

rms 22 Jun 2014 22:43

Another fantastic event :funmeteryes:

This was our second year there with four classic Land Rover Carawagons, this year joined by a SWB converted to a sleeper.

It was great to be there again and we enjoyed all of the seminars we attended, from the 'old pros' to the 'first timers'.
As usual we were often torn between seminars we wanted to attend which were on at the same time - sometimes we had to split up and later give each other a synopsis around the firepit! Not a complaint at all - just too many good things going on all of the time!

Thanks to all the folk who came to chat with us on our stand.

Thanks as well to all of the volunteers and organisers. It's great to be greeted by cheerful and enthusiastic volunteers on arrival; it really sets the mood for the whole event.

And special thanks to Sam who looked after us again, always with a smile on his face and kind words whenever we bumped in to him.

Cheers,
Robin.

PS. The free showers and earplugs this year were much appreciated

Another excellent show! Many thanks to all those who got involved, organising, or helping in anyway putting on the event.

As a Landy owner it was great catching with bikers met from last year's show and from Morocco earlier this year, and meeting new people, it got to a stage where I daren't pass anyone without asking questions.

The range and depth of knowledge of like-minded people and the information given freely makes this an event not to be missed, shame there's only one a year! :)

Safe travels to all.
Cheers Mark

Thank you very much for this great event! Andy has been crawling over and under every vehicle of interest and can't stop talking about it now. We met old friends and made new ones and enjoyed every moment. Lovely music!
A special thanks to Iain, the master of cyber space, and Louisa and Hadrian, who sorted out some electronic problems for me, so my presentation could show my mini movies.
Best joke of the weekend; my friend Janice arrives late on Friday evening, due to some bike problems. At the entrance people offer her, what she thinks are sweets, but she finds out she is eating ear plugs!

I must have been to six or seven HUBBs so far and I was just a little disappointed with this one. No fault of anybody's but my own. I greatly appreciate all the effort that goes into the organisation and presentations, especially the uproariously funny talk by Austin Vince (called me a 'parasite'). Friends I'd met at past meetings weren't there, Keith was stuck with his bike in the Persian Gulf, Ingo and Claudia were back in Zurich. I'm always happy to meet Bergit who works so hard on the clothing stand and is never without a smile. I enjoyed the comfort of a guest house in Castle Donington but it did mean I couldn't drink too much before riding back. At only £35 a night with a gut busting breakfast, it was comfortable and far far better than struggling to sleep in a bloody tent with planes flying overhead and failing yet again. However this did mean I missed out on the evening atmosphere. The Chequered Flag micropub in the village almost made up for this. No I may well give it a break next year before returning refreshed. A big big thanks though to everybody concerned.

Donington

Hello, Just home from Donington, when we left on Sunday we rode over to Bala Lake & camped, great ride home today :thumbup1:

As a bloke once said
"Don't aim for success if you want it; just do what you love and believe in, and it will come natural"

Thank you all very much for a great weekend

P.S. Just signed up for Haggs Bank please can we have the same weather

Donington - Thanks!

Thanks to everyone who organised such a tremendous Hubb meeting at Donington this weekend...

It was clear that a great deal of effort has been put once again into ensuring everything went so perfectly...& for also organising probably the best sunny weather we've seen so far this year!

Please give yourselves a big pat on the backs & I can't wait for Donington 2015!

Paul Holborn 24 Jun 2014 07:19

thanks everyone

This was my first HUBB meeting so I don't have anything compare it against. But I had a great few days so thanks to all involved in putting it together.

Can you have too much good company, wine and sunshine? :Beach: judging from some folks on Sunday morning the answer is probably yes!

Such a nice friendly bunch of folks.

I had a small breakdown on route (puncture) $toke , and after 2 hr delay was on the road again thanks to a friendly local called Andy stopped to help. Cheers Andy.

Happened to be standing in the bar talking to a pleasant grey haired bloke who's has written a couple of travel books and ridden an old triumph round the world in the late 70s. :thumbup1:

Bought a puncture repair kit. . . And new magazine subscription.. . And some great ideas about kit and stuff.

Great value weekend. Looking forward to the September meeting in the lakes.

Great days at Donington Park / From the Alps to the Midlands

Thanks to all made it happen!

Very big thanks to all helping us out in so many small struggles.
It started with the question if it will be already open on wednesday evening and we will be allowed to place our accomondation. (It came a little late 21.00/20 miles ahead to Midland Airport)

Being there everone was so friendly and helpful:
> No GBP on cash. ATM was not excepting foreign cards. No problem 2
minutes later there was cash provided, the rate from the web. Solved and
Beer was ordered.bier
> No hooks for the tent. (Missing some where home 1200km fare):oops2: No
problem 10 minutes later a hand full of hooks were provided.

Great!:thumbup1:

We met so many people with open mind.
We had big fun with the games.
The presentation were well scheduled so we took a chance on many of them.
Food and facility Top.
Getting informed about Shelter Box. It is a great idea and so well orgnised. So happy that so many people opened their pocket and raise such a big collection. I am realy impressed.

Resume.
This days at the greens reminded to the early years when less thinking more doing was priority and every week end an other destination was in focus.

Further I reminded that small things can have a big impact in direction of having fun.:funmeteryes:

A BMW/K1 is a nice motorcycle to hit a high milage in a day (1200km/15hours), but even a grass or mud track can slow you down in seconds.
New projekt is in mind thinking to the rotten small HONDA in the backyard or the "K100G Dirt tracker". We will see what is ready for the next meeting.

Cheers
Michel

What a weekend!!!

Got back from my 1st HUBB meet on Sunday evening and I must say what an awesome event.

Great atmosphere, great people (apart from one particular gobsh*te - everyone in main camping field will know who that was), great advice and even better weather.

I've been on these forums for years, just lurking around in the background absorbing any info I can as I have no experience as yet to contribute back but, 48hrs at the HUBB and I've gained more knowledge that I have picked up in 4 years on the forum!!

Fantsatic Talks - The legendary Austin Vince providing many laughs, Grant for his tyre changing demo (i now realise that I have entirely the wrong kit for that sort of thing :oops2:) and the chance to meet all the guys who I've been watching on the DVD series and finding out they really are as nice as you think they are.

Cracking few days - Will be back next year without fail!

Apologies to Rob, Jon and Matthew for not saying goodbye on the Sunday, I ended up leaving in quite a hurry :censored::scooter:

See you all next year if not sooner.

Rich

Had a blast, brilliant event - can it be beaten?

Thank you to everyone who attended my 1st ever presentation on trail riding in Otago, NZ. I was a bag of nerves but very pleased to see it well attended despite being at the same time as Graham Field. Then on Sunday I expected everyone to have left, so again, big thanks to those who stayed to listen. It was much appreciated :)

Good bits - everything!
Bad bits - not enough time in the day
I highly recommend going to bed at 3am for a good nights sleep :)

Finally left the campsite on Sunday at 4.30pm with the GS temp gauge displaying '30 degrees'!!

Thank you to everyone who organised and helped out throughout the weekend & a special thanks to Iain and Sam for, well, everything.

First Meet

Well my first Hubb Meet, what a fantastic four days:funmeteryes: i rode up from Dover , with the Dover to Donington ride getting there as the other riders leave to go up the curved off ramp , so i tag along. All is good as we make our way North, until we turn off, or not in my case ! . i am blocked out by a HGV and have to continue North on my own. ( note to self , head up better forward vision!) So eventually we all meet at Donington and ride in and the start of four brillant days.

i did my bit of volunteering at registration and first aid getting to know people chatting, and soaking up the atmosphere. Made some good friends, Karolien, Simon, July , Andy and others.

Watched some excellent presentations, which help fuel the desire to travel and explore our world. Had a go at skinning a rabbit, Road Kill Cook Out, very good a must see.

Then i meet the authors of the books i ve read , and having a beer with Ted Simon in the evening.

Sam, ian, Susan , Grant and other volunteers , presenters , staff a big THANK YOU for making this a great event. Look forward to next years Hubb and Humm!

Al

HUBB UK 2014 - Inspiring!

Thanks to all who made our HUBB so welcoming.

There was such a warm atmosphere of camaraderie not often found in such amounts, from the clapping welcome my carawagon and I received at the entrance to the tale of my lost shampoo.
I have a small bottle of shampoo I re/use and left it in the shower (boohoo). Got up the next day to have another shower - obviously not in my bag. But there it was, standing proudly outside the shower waiting for me (yay!)
Small things mean a lot.

Here are some of our carawagons..
http://i1121.photobucket.com/albums/...psc79ad752.jpg

Meeting buddies new and old, brilliant talks, buying books, great craic, and the show so well organised (including sunshine) by Sam and Iain and all the volunteers.
Oh, and the beer bier

Despite being an ancient, I was truly inspired by two young ladies who blew my socks off with their stoicism, character and bravery

HELEN LLOYDhttp://i1121.photobucket.com/albums/...ps7d500727.jpg
PS Sorry for pinching your photo off FB :oops2:
This lady is amazing, and her feats in numbers are awesome eg 45,000 miles cycled :eek3: In Siberia, -40C, on her own, with vodka-fueled drivers eating out of her hands. Inspiring. And she has now bought a Serow. What a gal!

CLAIRE ELSDON
http://i1121.photobucket.com/albums/...ps468de7c5.jpg
This young lady tells a great story and had us laughing and crying. Her fortitude, when alone and scared, is more than admirable. Inspiring. Hope she gets her bike back, or a new one, soon. What a gal!

They are are around the same age as my daughters, so my fatherly mode comes into play when they relive their deeds of daring-do. Not that they would need my assistance. I'd probably get help from them! They are women alone out there, showing us how it's done - an inspiration to us all.

The whole event was fantastic ... it being my first Hubb . wasn't sure what to expect .. but the fact that everyone was walking around smiling and even the UK sun came to play .... the 2 girls on push bike presentations were very inspiring .
Also a massive thanks to all those that organised it ...great job :) bier :funmeteryes:

Ted S, a legend

Good to meet Ted Simon after all this time and have a brief chat - read Jupiter's Travels shortly after it was published a couple of years after my first Trans-Africa.

You'll find him the Authors and Film makers marquee in the courtyard! You are going to find some cracking travel books and films there!!! :thumbup1: It's a great chance to have a natter with the guys too.

I am currently in Stavanger and have just finished reading Kevins excellent book. Norway is SO EXPENSIVE its beer or food and not both. Its amazing how a ham & cheese baguette can keep one going all day. Small beer 9UKP, a small meal 20UKP.

We thought you guys would like to see this from ShelterBox.

'I just wanted to drop you a line to say a huge THANKYOU for picking ShelterBox as your chosen charity of the year for the HUBB UK event.

The total amount raised at the event was an amazing £4075.67!

We had some great feedback from our volunteers manning the stand who said the attendees at the event were the perfect audience. They were so well travelled they understood the issues faced in other countries and therefore could really engage with what we do here at ShelterBox.

We would be absolutely delighted to work with you again in the future, if the opportunity arises, and once again a massive thank you for nominating ShelterBox as your chosen charity of the year.

Kind Regards

ShelterBox

Right, it's about time we thought about next year! :thumbup1:

What about 21st-24th May 2015? Go on, you know you want to . . . .

Hey, I tell you what I'll second that! Anytime before mid-June or after 20th July would be amazing for me. :)

But dont worry I'm not holding my breath; I assume it will be around the same time again, when most people expect it to be. Perfectly reasonable, just no good for me, alas

Milimut1 16 Jul 2014 15:36

Thumbs up

I know its been a while since we all packed up and went home, but I also wanted to add what a FANTASTIC time we had.
Old friends, New friends, great presentations, weather teriffic.
Danny & Fil so pleased you got Mike to do the magic stuff with the pheasant, now he has no excuses when I bring them home.
I want to be there next year but dont think I have enough holiday time as I have other stuff to fit in, but Mike should be there.
A highlight for me was Mike being star struck when purchasing the Ed Marsh DVD, he had to ask someone else to go buy it for him, it was fun seeing him turn that nice shade of pink.
Inspired of course, we did a long 745 mile weekend around the North of Scotland just make sure you fill up with fuel when you can and keep your fingers crossed you find garages open on a Sunday.
See you all at Haggs in September

Hi Everyone,
May we ask for your help. The Feedback Questionnaire. If you've not filled in yours yet, we'd be very grateful if you could crack on and do it before Friday 25th please. bier

Much of what you saw happening this year at the HUBB UK, the layout, the presentations, the outdoor activities, the exhibitors and how many there were, the price of the beer and well, just about everything was influenced by everyone's feedback last year.

The whole point of the HUBB UK is to Inspire, Inform and Connect. You all filling in the feedback helps us do our best to make it the event you would like to have.

A huge thanks to everyone who has completed it to date. Brilliant! Thanks very much :thumbup1:

At the risk of winning the silly question of the day award, where might one find said Feedback Questionnaire please ?

Oh dear - possibly a Senior Moment here, but don't remember seeing a link for it. Has one been posted? :helpsmilie:
Thanks

Sam Manicom 19 Jul 2014 16:31

Ha! The only silly question is the one that doesn't get asked when an answer really is needed!

The answer in this instance is that everyone who booked in advance on line, will have had an email through with the link and the info. If you've not had yours, always worth checking your spam box. :thumbup1:

Well I've checked Sam and my first confirmation email was last July, 2013, and then there was an email about volunteer crew rotas and I've also searched under different sender names as well but I've received an awful lot of emails since last July so I've given up now I'm afraid and no I don't have a spam box.

Sorry.

Same here Sam, Confirmation received back in July 13 and can't find any questionnaire link in that one, nor since. Nothing in spam.
Was it sent some other time?

Otherwise - nevermind - it was a great time! :clap:beer

Bonniebird 12 Aug 2014 16:09

Any dates for 2015 yet?
Started next years trip planning already, but don't want to miss out on the HUBB like I did this year :scooter:

Sam Manicom 12 Aug 2014 16:53

Hiya, I bloomin' hope you don't miss it too! As for the dates, Iain and I are hoping to hear soon. We'll post here as soon as we know. Sorry we can't be more helpful...

Milimut1 1 Sep 2014 22:05

I know you have said you would post 2015 dates as soon as you have them, but I now have a wee problem, I will probably have to take an educated guess as to when the event will be as I have to submit my first 3 weeks holiday choice for 2015/16 at the latest middle of next week. Any hints to the dates would be appreciated.
No pressure you understand .............

Lonerider 12 Dec 2014 07:06

Is there any news on the photos from the meet? Or have I missed the link

Cheers
Wayne
