Turbo charged xt600?
Any thoughts on using one of these little jap turbos? Thinking of giving one a go in the buggy.

I'm not sure why, but I just cant see an XT engine holding up to boosted applications. first thing in my mind is grenade between legs...... not a thought I like to consider.

Not for a bike but a off road buggy, so motor would behind in engine compartment.

Honestly, I think its a lot of effort better spent on an I4 motor. if you're doing a turbo, I4 is the best to do that on, not a single cylinder.
Knowing a few people with turbo bikes, this route is quite pricey, and for the cost, unless money is absolutely no object, you could easily go out and buy a used 09 R1 for what it would cost to turbocharge a motorcycle. Really the big issue is that almost every turbo is too big, and honestly, having a custom made turbo, isnt at all cheap I dont think. |
Well, never say never but I suspect the reason why you don't see too many turbo'd four stroke singles is that their engine characteristics don't suit the way a turbo works.
You could probably make a reasonable go of fuel injection if you've got good engineering facilities, enough development time and a decent budget but apart from the satisfaction of doing it I'm not sure you'd gain a huge amount. It's obviously possible - most of the manufacturers have had to do it in the last decade or so. |
Good points never thought it would cost big to set it up.
I have a yamaha apex mtn snowmobile which runs the R1 motor so maybe another one in the buggy may be the answer but I do like the light weight xt600 motor. |
there was a company back in the early 90's who supercharged an Xtz660.

Could be worth a look, The R1 motors turboed can put out 562hp which is crazy!!

single cylinder engines are not a good idea for forced induction, especially turbo. the exhaust gas pulses are too widely spaced, and the lag would make the thing a pain to ride with. A small exhaust collector on the downpipe may smooth things a bit, but really, only do it cos you need a challenge, or you are trying to get through racing regs. (am still trying to sort a supercharged cg125)

I hear ya, it would just be to play around with the buggy not the bike. May start looking for a r1 motor anyhow.

single cyliner engines dont respond that well to turbocharging. The exhaust cycle isnt steady, it's on-off-on ect so the turbo doenst see a steady pressure to drive it.

Yeh those busa motors rock but mega bucks.
I love the xt motor cause it light and power to weight is the key in these buggys. Think I'll keep it and just work on tuning and carbie kit. Any one know what the most HP you can get from one of these motors? |

Since you're making a buggy XT600... I got a Mikuni BST40 single carb and a Yamaha Grizzly 600 2-into-1 cylinder head to carburetor intake manifold The Grizzly600 uses this carburetor and intake manifold... How about it? oh yeah, the grizzly600 engine is basically the same as the XT600E! Vando :cool4: |
