ok, clearer now

something definitely wrong with your 600 then... should easily do 70-80 mph

could be a bunch of things, would start with the obvious: clogged fuel supply, dirty air filter

the downloadable workshop manual has good troubleshooting list, will be a bit of chore to retype it all here :)

New petrol, air filter clean. Plugs newish...I have just installed a SIGMA jet kit which is supposed to be for aftermarket exhaust and air filter.

Aint feeling the love at the minute.

:(

Seriously thinking about getting a xt660r now

There's something wrong with your bike. My TTR pulls hard in all gears and runs out of gearing before it runs out of power. Spec sheet claims a top speed of 95 and mine will hit 85 with no problems. Haven't gone faster than that.

nikroc 14 Aug 2016 07:05

I know there's something wrong with my bike..just don't know what.

It was slow before the fitting of filter/pipe and jet kit. I thought the jet kit was supposed to adjust the carb settings to maximise the so called benefits of the filter and pipe combo..:frown:

turboguzzi 14 Aug 2016 16:42

fresh petrol doesnt mean that flow to the carb is fine... to fully rule this out fuel issues you need to drop the fuel bowl and check that the flow is decent.

what's the color of the plug like?

Maddin 14 Aug 2016 18:38

which XT600 do you have?

nikroc 14 Aug 2016 19:07

i don't. I have a 2003 ttr600e...

Maddin 14 Aug 2016 19:44

ah ok. maybe I read to fast...

check the things already said, but two other thoughts:

- you have two carbs, one for the left channel and one for the right channel. the left one is actuated by the throttle, the other one by underpressure at higher revs. Make shrue the second one is working too. it has a membrane which can deteriorate. check the sizes of the nozzles/jets.

- just to mention it: there is a way to restrict the max. power for new drivers by restricting the airflow through the second carb. the connector between carb and head has then a smaller hole. Not one of these is installed...

looks like ill be taking the carbs off again...in terms of a 'restictor' what am i looking for?

Maddin 15 Aug 2016 10:05

the connector between carb and head will have a MUCH smaller hole.

nikroc 15 Aug 2016 10:10

sorry to be completely dense here but I have nothing to compare it to. Am in process of taking the carbs out now.

Maddin 15 Aug 2016 10:23

no problemo

http://www.xtmania.de/xttipps/drossel20kw.jpg

This is a restrictor, maybe its just a metal plate between connector and head with a small hole.

Here from ebay unrestricted connectors: VERGASER ANSAUGSTUTZEN YAMAHA TT600 XT600 … XT600Z Tenere … Intake carburetor | eBay

here the restrictor: Yamaha Ansaugstutzen rechts 20 kW für XT 600 Mod.94-95, XT 600E Mod.94-95 | eBay

good luck :-)

When you remove, check right hand carb Diaphragm. The rubber gets hard and maybe problems raising this, check for holes. https://www.google.no/search?q=carb+...HfZuApYQsAQIGw

nikroc 15 Aug 2016 12:10

carbs have now been stripped, blasted with carb cleaner and blown through with a compressor.

Sprayed enough carb cleaner on to diaphragm itself to form a puddle. no leaks.

No restrictor in 2nd carb inlet.

Cant find the paperwork/setup instructions that came with the jet kit though.

Everything, including the air mixture screw is set home. Need to know how many times to backscrew out..think its 2 1/2....

other than what I've done I'm at a loss....

xtrock 15 Aug 2016 13:20

Yes its about 2,5 turn on the xt, when i installed the dynojetkit i raised the needle on the diaphragm and drilled a bigger hole in it. You see the hole beside the needle.
