What the matter with people?
 

I am I the only one who gets irate when people answer your ( oops I should say a post not my) post with drivel? Why do guys and gals feel the need to join in when they have nothing useful to say? It seems insane to me that they would bother. But it also means that I and others I guess, spend time checking out the new post only to find its rubbish.

It's just me is n't I'll get me coat.

Can't say it bothers me much as long as it isn't the "You've got money waiting in Nigeria" type of spam (unless of course you really have got money waiting in Nigeria). The mods are pretty good with that stuff as well as the occasional "you're a complete cnut" type of abuse post.

Mostly if someone's taken the time and effort to post something, even if it's off topic, I'm happy to read it. Better than (IMHO) than people posting nothing because any slight deviation from "just gimme the facts" will be met with derision or worse. Even irrelevant answers take time to tap out and someone's taken the time to to that even if it might seem to you (a generic term - not you specifically) a pointless waste of that time.

Now I'm trying to work out whether I should post this or just move on with my life and ignore it all. That's 10 mins I'll never get back again.:rofl:

Some people are 'chatty', some are not. You will find the same when travelling.

What's "drivel"? Who determines what's "useful"? Those who respond with what you may interpret as "drivel" or "useless" may have had the best of intentions. No one can truly know what the other person may find useful or not.

It's not like you're paying for a professional service where you're within your rights to expect a certain standard of "quality". These forums are for open discussions and there can potentially be as many different kinds of responses as there are participants. If we all worried about whether what we have to say is useful or drivel no one would post anything.

I try to cultivate a temperament of a world traveller. As such I try to foster within myself patience, understanding, flexibility and compassion. Becoming "irate" at not getting the answer I wanted from a post would run counter to that temperament.

Since you only joined a few months ago and only have 16 posts so far I decided to start reading your posts. I have to honestly say that all the responses would never make me "irate". On the other hand, your responses would make me not want to participate in the thread even if I had just done that Austrian route yesterday.

Leaping into an online community, starting two threads and then telling well meaning posters with links to your route that they shouldn't have responded is generally not conducive to civil discourse.

Why do they bother? I would guess, they too thought much the same as you did, when you posted this thread. You thought it was useful, but I for one can't say that every one who will read it will form the same opinion. Also not everyone may fully understand what it means, and may respond in a less than clear way, language differences perhaps? Some people may not be able to express their thoughts and response in a clear and precise manner, I'm not the most eloquent writer.

So captinktm in answer to your main question "What the matter with people?" Nothing mostly. :thumbup1: no need to get irate.

Ah the old you have only posted 16 post. You don't get it do you? Just because some one has post 20 000 posted on here does n't mean they know what they are talking about. If you don't agree then watch me clock up a thousand by simply posting "Dito" or something else equally as useless. This was the point of my post, if we all just posted information relevant to the original post then it would save us wading through the drivel. What's all this expect a certain quality? I just wanted an eye witness rather than a story teller. I also did n't realise there was a pecking order on here. But now I know.
Lastly the reason I have only 16 post (well done for counting) is because I had nothing useful to add, mainly because I am out there doing it rather than riding a key board.

There is a simple solution if you don't like how people respond on this forum, go elsewhere and hope you get a more helpful answers there.

Having just bought an Enfield and returned to related forums I can understand the frustration. You post pretty specific questions and get stuff back thats pretty useless. I asked about running a heated jacket on a 12V bike and got a lot of stuff about how in 1860's men were men, the winters were harder and the sheep were worried they'd end up sharing with stranded travellers. The old boys on the tinkering sites just don't know. (The answer is to fit a headlight switch BTW).

Look at it this way, every post brings the question back to the top of the pile where someone in the know may answer. What doesn't answer your question may give someone else an idea.

We should be grateful people make the effort.

What you might call drivel some people might call conversation, this isn't just a question and answer system - it's a place to share information, ideas and opinions.

Like in the real world you'll find people who stay rigidly in topic in conversation and you'll find people who veer wildly off topic. I generally appreciate both types, I certainly appreciate both types when I'm not paying for their time.

I found;
the jacket run flat out was about 60 watts
with the jacket one shirt layer away from me, and the rest of the insulation on top it needs about 20 watts to keep me warm in snow while riding.

There is a 36 watt headlight globe used in scooters that is almost the same size as a normal H4 55 watt globe .. substitute that globe and you have gained the required 20 watts to run the jacket.. some places expect you to run the headlight.

Sorry for the drivel that has nothing to do with 'what is wrong with people' :innocent: ... well not really.

Welcome to the internet.

Most of the time there's nothing wrong with people but sometimes it's also wise to have a look in the mirror. You never know how you come across. After all, people only see text, no emotions.

captinktm, why devalue others time/posts in such a way? Like backofbeyond wrote, every post takes time to write and in the Austrian road thread, klausmong1 was ready to ask his friends about the road.

As I said in the first sentence of this post, welcome to the internet. Majority of posts on the net would classify as "drivel", if using your terms, and a very small portion is made of facts. Yet the conversations aka drivel is what keeps forums alive. If people would only reply with facts, the forums would be ghost towns. Well, forums have been on a decline for over a decade now anyway.

What was it that Mollydog said again in the Tijuana border thread?

Something along the lines of ex-US defence force members being "damaged goods".

Methinks that comment can be applied to other countries than just the US. :(

Good man, you are of course absolutely correct. I am ex military, worse than that an ex Sergeant Major. I make no apologises for the way I am after all it has saved lives.

I can speak for others but for me its mostly that I'm about 10kgs overweight and i've got a little cyst on my left bollock. ;-)
