One of the side things I like do here in Peru is to offer to buy the best Chinese bikes (they are getting better and better) for riders who want to ride SA in a budget way, change and reenforce a few things to prep them for trips...

I do this so that more budget folks can experience this beautiful country of Peru (that has adopted me) ON A BIKE!

Advantages over going it on your own:

(1) You won't break down because I've already gone over and bettered certain things. I have many insights on prepping that Chinese bike that will save you ALOT of possible headaches (This is a foto of an on/off road 250cc model I recommend... but there are many others).

No worrying about the quality of the machine or waiting 2 weeks before you can start!

(2) You will already have a license plate, papers, and insurance (in my name!) to start your journey! The Peruvian police don't care who's name the bike is in (within Peru) as long as you have all the papers and insurance! No worrying about the quality of the machine or how to waste time waiting for paperwork!

You just go sign some papers with me here in Huanuco (2 hrs), then you take off and I send the new papers (the ones IN YOUR NAME! http://d26ya5yqg8yyvs.cloudfront.net/deal.gif) to you near the border of your choice! I live in the middle of Peru (Huanuco) so it's easy to ride for an enjoyable two weeks (or more) to any of the 7 border crossings....

sounds really tempting to me! unfortunatly I was thinking of starting in Chile! But I am flexible and maybe could chance my plans :-)

I saw this and it certainly sounds like a generous offer. Right now I'm not really in a financial situation where I can take off to S.A. for any length of time, but I am very tempted! :mchappy:

I'm on my own UK registered bike in Peru and I agree it's a stunning country. However, when stopped by the police at their all too frequent checkpoints, their first request has been for my driving licence, followed by registration papers for the bike and SOAT (Insurance). If I've understood you correctly, the driving licence would be in a different name to the registration and SOAT.

That's a great idea, got me thinking now for when i come back from Europe and Russia next year. Am i right in saying that you can visit all the countries in SA on this deal or is it limited to a couple of them??

Police don´t care if your driver´s licence is in a different name to the bike´s papers.
I´ve been stopped in this situation countless times with no problem at all.
The SOAT (insurance) relates to the bike not you.
You can also ride on an EU driving licence for 6 months after arrival in Peru.

If the police are determined to find an infraction it´s generally only so you pay for their lunch. 10 soles covers pretty much any (real or imagined) traffic offence.

Having bought several vehicles in Peru (with a work/residency visa) i would leap at the offer of the original poster.
You really don´t want to get involved with the paperwork, trust me.

He's right! Then if you plan to leave the country I can be doing your paperwork so that it is in your name.. you have 2 weeks to get to a northern or southern city where I will courrier the papers in your name to you. SOAT insurance can be in any name as long as it is the right bike.

Wish I had known about this back in February! Very hard to find out any information about bikes and biking in Peru (didn't know also about HU then!) I bought a Ronco Demolition 250 back then (total cost new was around US$1600) and have been travelling around a bit since then. The paperwork was easy in the end - just had to go to a notary to get my foreign papers "verified" and that was it. Bought SOAT and ready to ride. Had brackets made so I could mount metal panniers (also made locally) for an extra fuel container (not needed yet!!) and tools, etc. and the bike has performed beyond my expectations! Will store it locally till next year when I come back for another 6 months adventure!

Hey! You did good. The Demolition is a decent bike (except for the 19" front wheel and the rock hard inverted forks). You didn't mention how you waited out the paperwork for 2 weeks, 'cause they won't give you the plate until 6 days after your get the owners card and you can't ride around without a plate!

Do you put a rack and hooped pannier rails on the back of the Chinese 250 enduro's?
I would be travelling with soft luggage, something like the Magadans and would need hooped panniers rails to put them on the bike?

Yes, we have a welding shop. I am not familiar with those specific bags, but if you give me the dimensions, I can make them.

The Sumo Torque comes with a wonderful rear rack and good rear peg mounts, so places to secure are already provided.

Thanks for getting back in touch, I am at work abroad at the moment but they would need to be like the ones on my bike at home, they are the Touratec hooped pannier rails. If you need dimensions then I can get you them nearer the time.

What are the bikes like for standing on the pegs when off roading

I just bought 2 more Sumo Torque 250s today for my tours. That's how happy I am with these machines!

The pegs are pretty basic, but I've stood on them (230 lbs) ALOT off road and no bending. but for $40 I can get wide cast pegs with 4 rows and adapt them to it. I've put the same on all my Hondas (XR650Ls, NX400s, XR250s) and are very happy with them.

Remember that I need a month to:

Get the paperwork started (and finished before you get here)
Make the adjustments and changes for durability and gearing
Build the racks you need (dimensions needed upon ordering)

I would build the racks out of 1/2 square profile tubular steel. It is light and strong and the bags sit flat against the supports.

I like your bike!! I run the transparent 5.8 gal ACERBIS tanks on my XR650Ls and they are great!
