Hello Guys.
I thought I will start a new thread for all the KLE pics. Here are some of my pics. 1. If you cannot read the green sign, it says: Dangerous mountain passes ahead. Yippee! 2. Tea break at a water crossing. 3. Back home after 650km in 2 days and totally knackered. |
Two more pics...

Hi all
These two pics were taken on a morning recent ride into the countryside between Richmond and Ixopo in KZN, South Africa. The R56 road includes a proper mountain pass with tight second gear hairpins and awesome fast sweepers. Attachment 241 Attachment 242 |

Hello Radiohead.
It looks like you guys had some fun out there. Anyway guys here are some more pics of a trip I did to Wupperthal. Regards Pic 1 shows the larger screen I made. 2 Was taken at the Wupperthal info sign 3 Having fun with a blown regulator |
Pleco,
What did you use to make that screen? It looks good from what I can see. I see your numberplate also got chewed on by the tyre shark. Nicki |
Screen
Hello Nicki.
I see you found the site again. I bought a 3mm perspex sheet at about R120 I think, and then removed the originanl screen, drilled a hole through the new screen at the bottom in line with the right hand center srew, mounted it onto that screw, and then used a heat gun to mould the screen around to the other center bolt. I then continued the procecess to the rest of the screws, alternating between left and right. I then cut away the corners top and bottom with a mini grinder to make it look right. I will put the measurements of the starting sheet on this post, as the width need to be correct, otherwise the mirrors touch at full lock. A few things I need to change: Do not tilt the top of the screen forward as the original screen. Make sure to keep the airgap at the bottom centre of the screen. These 2 things keep the buffeting down behind the screen. Cut the screen corners myself, and not pay R120 to someone else to do it. Use a 2mm sheet. After you have bent the sheet it is very sturdy, and the 2mm heats and bends much easier. Also need to be more careful with the heat gun around the plastic fairing. It is actually quite easy to make, and you can basically make the screen as big as you want. You will need to cut recesses for the mirrors if you want to make it any wider though. If you buy a 2mm sheet, will easily safe about R600 for an aftermarket screen. Regards |

tire shark
Hello Guys.
I did not even realise that it happened, until I got off the bike and saw it. I do not have knobblies on the back, so I take it that it was caused by flying rocks. Any idea to stop this from happening? I went throught prince alfred's pass, and baviaans without it happening again. (I forgot to take the plastic number plate off) It could be quite costly if I need to replace the plate after each trip! Regards |
I removed the reflector, and bought another one which I stuck to the number plate light shield with double sided tape. I then had a smaller plate made to try and avoid this, but low and behold, the tyre shark struck again.
I then noticed that one of the bolts connecting the black plastic to the mudguard was not tightened all the way. I tightened it, and the black plastic thingie is now more secure. It is still flexible, I don't know if it will eat my next numberplate, which I'll only put on the day before my drivers test to avoid it being eaten. |

Hi There,
Here is a picture of my 400 in Kampot (Cambodia). I had just made some racks to fit the new pannier bags and was keen to try them out... also a good excuse to get out of Phnom Penh for the week end. P |
Could you post a picture/diagram of how you made up the pannier rack? It would be very useful. Thanks

Hello there, you all lovers of the best bike ever!!!
I´ll tell you something. This bike is good, really good and though!! And simple, which is very important when u go touring to the end of the world. Enjoy some pics. First one on the famous "ruta 40" in the Patagonia Argentina. Attachment 593 Second (glorius pic!) riding our KLEs on top of the Andes at 4300m (yes, there is very little oxygen up there but we´ve made it!!). Hi Nicola M,
I have visited your web site and really attracted about the KLE. I am still between KLE500 and Honda XL650 Transalp. Yesturday, I went to a second hand bike shop here in Ankara. Both bikes look attractive, KLE is a bit cheaper. And in you web site I have seen that the KLE is as capable as the XL650. Though, reliable, easy to repair, powerfull... Could you please tell me what mods did you do to your KLE and what sort of problems did you have with the bike? I have seen the modified petrol tank pictures but did not understand a single word because they are in Italian. Could you also briefly explain how the petrol tank was modified? Thanks |
not a KLE, but...

As for how you know your carbs need a clean I am not so sure, in my case I had intermittent fuelling problems (power dropping suddenly, very poor starting, foulded plugs) and started taking it apart from the top down. Luckily my problem was near the top! Once I had got a local truck to come and help dig the sand out my float bowls the bike went back together fine |

Nice to have you on friend.
Good little mod is to cut a small square out of a rubber car mat and screw it onto the plastic flap that sits just infront of the rear shocker. It stops all the crap off the rear wheel getting onto the shock, very easy to do and it saves a lot of cleaning. regards Roy:welcome: |
Nice one Roy:thumbup1:, I'll try that instead of geting a mud flap from m&p:cool4:

That reminds me
Just a thought about the crap-flap; motocross bike shops can sell you a cheap one that is made for the job - more flexible than a car mat but less flexible than an inner tube (most ones anyway!).
They come supplied with a thin metal strip which helps with fixing them and they can be used to protect the shocker, or as a fenda extender. |
Quote:
TDMalcolm |
I had the mat so I cut it and tried it, worked fine.
I bought a mud flap from a motocross shop to fit on the front as an extenda fenda. It looked cool but the tyre just chewed it up. My way worked better and so I will cut a bit more out of the old car mat and make a front mudflap. |
question
Hi to all
Im new kle rider and new on forum, just want to say hello to all, site is awesome and people on forum, i get my kle month ago its my first bike and I love it as it is..its year 1994 with 44000 on clock I have 2 stupid questions: 1.I dont know is my kle 400 or kle 500? since my registration papers is changed, frend of mine drove it 175/h and he sad it is his top speed so I supose its 500? 2.where I can check oil level in engine?I have service manual but it doesnt say nothing about that here is pic.. best regards to all |
Quote:
1/look on the left hand side of the engine for it's serial no, the 1st 2 digits are letters the second should be the cc /model no, eg EN500 this is how mine looks donating it's a 500cc engine.....:confused1: 2/look on the left side of engine again (below the rear brake lever) you should see a little round window, with the bike uprite ( may need an asistant) check that the oil level is between the two horizontal lines maked on it....:thumbup1: I hope that helps TDMalcolm |
Hi TD,
Ive got a spare rubber flap for the front mudgard if you want it, send us a PM with your address and I will send it you. Cheers Roy:thumbup1: |

Kawasaki kle 400
Hi,
Can anyone please give me some advice on their experience with the KLE 400. I'm interested in buying a dual purpose type bike and I can get a '94 KLE400 on a private deal. What must I look out for, what is a good price to pay, how powerful is it comparing to the KLE500 and KLR650, what topspeed is it capable of. I weigh 85kg and is about 1.8m tall, will the bike be comfortable on and off-road. I will really appreciate any info and advice Buddy South Africa |

Hi folks,
Thought it was about time i contributed to the kle owners section, so here's some pics of my kle in Spain. I have got panniers and racks on it ,handle bar risers, tall screen , heated grips, engine bars, custom seat( the original is horrible) centre stand, gps and a top box. My only complaint about the bike is the small tank and silly, silly side stand which doesnt seem to work when you go abroad.(on the other side of the road, you cant get the bike to stand because of the camber) apart from that i love it. |

Nice pics Matt.
Im sat here at the computer in work, getting very depressed coz I aint out playing on my bike. Ive not been out for ages and Its taking its toll............ must eat more toffee.....etc |
Hi Guys, Glad to see I'm not the only one with withdrawal symptoms of the bike riding variety:(I to am at the bench with me nose on the grinder:rolleyes2:
Got a half day off from work tomorrow.... I'm gona ride my bike! don't try n stop me!!:mchappy: TDMalcolm |
Its as cold as a witches tit up here, I hope you have thick underpants!
|
Thankfully i break up for two weeks tommorrow, but i will only get to ride to my sisters in Warrington then back to Nottingham for xmas.
I rode up there last xmas eve, I went over the top of the Peak district, the cat and fiddle road, the fog was so thick at one point i couldn't see the dials on the dash. I won't risk that again in winter, i'll just have to go the long way round. I will say this though, i love riding in any weather, snow, hail anything. Myself and my best mate Dylan have both been london cylce couriers in the past , which meant cycling 100 miles a day in any weather.we have also cycled 3700 miles across the United States on our mountain bikes and across Europe, so this adventure mortorbike lark seems like luxury at times. I love love the fact you can carry so much more on a motorbike, weight is not so much of an issue as it is on push bikes. Anything on two wheels inspires adventure. |
Many happy times in Warrington, I used to drive buses there and had a great laugh.
Like you, I used to live on my push bike and would be out in any weather. I used to race for StHelens CRC, Great days. Im too used to comfort now though (As I chomp on yet another toffee). Ive just bought a new racing bike with the hope I can get some sort of fitness back (Chomp!).....again!. No, serious.... |
Quote:
Love it! :thumbup1: Will that be traded in for an adventure model or, maybe, a dual sport when your fitness has returned? Kidding of course: I am sticking with a cheap mountain bike for now; I posted earlier about push-bikes for travel but they cost more than a decent second hand motorbike!!!!!!!!! :rolleyes2: |
Iceland
When are you planning Iceland Matt ?? or have you maybe been here all ready ??
I have an KLE just like yours and I am in the process of installing panniers that I used on a Transalp before I got the the KLE. Requires a bit of mods to the old racks so I am quite interested in pictures of yours if you have some ? Same if you have already done Iceland, then I am interested in your trip and story. If not, you and others are welcome to contact me if I can be of any help up here in Iceland. Best regards, Henry |

hi roy
let me know when u fancy a run . it looks like u have your top box set back on your rack. i just got luggage racks on my bike yesterday and have to change how i put top box back on . what make of box is yours as it looks like the 1 i have. do u know if they do a headlight cover for our bike as a stone hit mine the other day no mark thank god. |
Hi Neil,
The topbox is a Kappa K28 (28ltr) which will hold quite a bit for a small box. Kappa Hard Luggage - FREE UK DELIVERY Im not aware of any headlight covers for the kle as of yet, mabey there is one for the z750 which has a similar headlight and may be modded to suit. Like I said in an earlier post, The new z1000 has clear indicator lenses which will fit ours. So it mabey a case of looking whats about for other kwaks and making them fit. Im just about to see if I can arrange some time off to go to this years HU in derbyshire. Roy:thumbup1: P.S Ive sent you a PM. |
Thanks Henry, we won't be going to icelant untill 2009, as we are off to Norway this summer, but I will let you know.
Do you have any photos of your bike in iceland? I would love to see them. |

Motohaus Powersports Limited 5 Crumplins Business Court Odiham RG25 2RG 01256-704-909 sales@motohaus.com Part number VP162 for new shape KLE or VP045 for old shape. Worked out at £24 delivered, expensive but cheaper then a new headlight. Roy:thumbup1: |
Just a quick update on the headlight protector, It arrived broken in half so I contacted Motohaus and they sent me another by next day recorded.
The second one came this morning...yes it was broken too. The problem is, they have only sent them in Jiffy bags and are getting broken during delivery. I contacted Motohaus this morning and in credit to them, They were very helpful but had no more in stock and would have to order more from there suppliers. So, If you plan to order one of these..make sure you ask for it to be boxed. Also, the protector looks very nice and would do the job. The package it comes in says its for the z1000(zr1000 a1) 2003. So I would advise you folks to have a shop round to see if you can find one cheaper under the z1000 listing. Cheers Roy |

Hey,
I love my KLE, I have done about 13,500 km in the last 2 years. I have put better tyers on and put the "speny" up a noch at the back for a better position and I have some soft panniers for the missions. I tried to put some better hand guards and found that my kle bars were not hollow so the Accerzbid whatevers would not go on. Also looked like the windscreen could get smashed from them if the bike went over coz they stuck out so much further. I will maybe get some wider bars sorted eventually. Its a great bike.. especially when your on the motor way and it cuts out on you when you have to switch over to the reserve tank, haha. Thats always fun. I need to get my chain sorted its V dirty and jammed in parts from all the dust! I want to clean it or even replace it. Does anyone have recommendation for the spray grease that I have been using? Is it good or is chain lube / oil necessary? Cheers, Cardy (Yorkshire) |

Attachment 1691
Attachment 1692Hi from sunny ZA I am currently the owner of my second KLE500. The first pic is of my 1991 KLE500. Got it second hand with 20000km on and put on just over 20000km. Bike had K&N type pod filters, open Gianelli pipe, ported and 0.5mm oversized sleeve. Felt significantly more powerful than my current 2006 KLE500. Unfortunately I found out the motor was damaged before I got her, resulting in a top end disaster. Replaced the bike with a 2006 KLE500 (second pic). Feels underpowered compared to the old one. Have to replace the restrictive pipe. Fitted an Aerotrim (aerotrim.co.za - About Us) this weekend - only did low speed gravel riding <110 km/h, so have not checked whether it helps for buffeting I've been experiencing with a pilion on at speeds >130km/h. The old KLE was no problem beyond 150km/h, without a screen. Anyone else experience buffeting problems? |

Nice pics Ian, question, Did you fit those handguards on the standard bars or did you change the bars also?.
regards Roy:thumbup1: |
Yep - standard bars... A little farting around with a dremel and vice-grips to remove the end-weight mounts, and also the oxford heated grips needed to be carefully cut as well.
Work well and make the bars more rigid too boot! Cheers Ian |
Hey Ian,
Nice photos! Do you have any pics showing the frames under the soft luggage? I'm trying to make some now for soft luggage for my kle and trying to get ideas of the best options (i've got rjays touring saddlebags so similar size to what u're using). Did you make them yourslef or get someone else do them? I ask cause i'm in nsw as well. Cheers jake p.s. any advice on the heated grips, i've got a set of oxford grips i'm about to mount up. |
Quote:
Also how have you found your tyres for wear as I've just worn out my Trailmaxs and was looking at Dunlop 606s but may look at slightly more road oreintated. Cheers Mick |
No Photo's at present, but the mounting points are pretty simple....
Get some extra long (allen head) bolts for the rack mount points closest to the back edge of the seat, and make up some spacers to allow a flush mount against the rack - this is where the rear mount point goes. The lower mount point is behind the footpeg bracket mounts (using both bolts). My racks are built so that both side covers and seat can be removed without touching the pannier racks. I will take some photos to illustrate the mounting points and constrauction better. A mate made them up as he is a gun with a welder as my work can be best described as "cocky-shit on steel". Cheers Ian |
Here's a couple of recent shots of my toy with new dulop 606's:clap: so far all that's done since i bought it new in August is a Ventura rack on the rear with a Ventura bag, bought a motodry bag and modified the rack to suit as ventura bag is s#^t. Also replaced the front screen with an eaglescreen wide tourer one. Have tank bag for short trips, adjusted the rear preload to
hardest setting.....why didnt I do this when i bought it:confused1: (I'm only 75kg's but the rear is extremely soft well worth doin) The to do list consists of bar, bar risers, barkbusters, better footpegs, side panniers and racks, exhaust and front springs and oil change. Hey it's only money:laugh: try tellin that to the Mrs!!! http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t...3112008059.jpghttp://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t...3112008058.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t...3112008016.jpghttp://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t...2112008009.jpg |
Home made pannier rack pictures
Due to special request (from Keater and others) please see below for close ups of pannier frames. I use Andyz Explorer Pannierz, and would only change the size of the hoops marginally to better suit the bags (the racks were made prior to obtaining the bags) - I may in future mesh fill the hoops for better support of the bags, but they work fine at present (2000km round trip to Pooncarie and back with no dramas)
RHS Frame http://i322.photobucket.com/albums/n...8/IMGP2771.jpg RHS Lower Mount must be shaped to allow for the bolt behind the footpeg mount http://i322.photobucket.com/albums/n...8/IMGP2772.jpg LHS Upper mount - typical of the RHS also - Longer bolts are required here 55mm allen head from memory. Spacers are required to place in the recess in the rear rack mount to allow the panner rack to mount flush with the rear rack and keep proper tension. http://i322.photobucket.com/albums/n...8/IMGP2773.jpg LHS Frame http://i322.photobucket.com/albums/n...8/IMGP2774.jpg LHS Lower mount - again this mount must be shaped differerently to clear protrusions behind footpeg mount. Note that BOTH bolts are used to retain the lower mount and to keep the angle of the footpeg mount. http://i322.photobucket.com/albums/n...8/IMGP2775.jpg Hope this helps all those that are interested... Cheers Ian |

Hi there, just have to ask - do you know the type/manufacturer of the pannier rack? Regards, Shaun |
how does the kle perform on motorways v say an xt660
wondering how they stand up to 80mph , particularly with regard to vibrations |
80mp is no problem, mine will sit comfortably on 80mph all day. Approximately 7000 rpm. :funmeteryes: (16 tooth front sprocket, 44 rear).
It is a twin so there is a slight vibration, don't expect the silky smoothness of a 4 but no problem doing long hauls (approx 240 between fills with some in reserve) |
