Canada West 2014 HU Travellers Meeting, Nakusp, BC, August 21-24, 2014

Full details and Registration open now!

If you haven't been to Nakusp, you owe it to yourself to go - the scenery is spectacular, the roads are stunning, (you WILL see wild animals from the road) and I can guarantee a great time! :mchappy:

Over the weekend last year we had around 26 presenters putting on 36 shows! Check out the range of topics to come in 2014 here, and more are being added all the time!

We also have two new rooms available to us for presentations!

We are also now accepting applications from presenters for putting on a show, it can be on any bike related travelling topic. To help with planning the event we need your application forms in early please!

We are also looking for volunteers as usual! We had an excellent crew last year doing a range of activities. It takes help from volunteers to put on the meeting and this year we'll need a few more. When you register for the event you'll have an opportunity to volunteer, and we'd greatly appreciate it if you'd help out for just a few hours. It's a GREAT way to meet people too!

It worked so well last year, once again we've reserved the ENTIRE campground! So you can camp anywhere you like, have your own space, or share with friends!

You can get the latest event updates by subscribing to this thread, (thread tools, subscribe) or visiting the Facebook event page.

We look forward to seeing you there! :mchappy:

Very excited to come to come to our second HUBB meeting, this one will be during our own RTW which begins in May. We'll be heading south from Alaska at this point so it will be perfect timing for a little break.

Oo-SEB-oO 11 Mar 2014 16:22

AHA! So at least a few people will attend the meeting while being on a RTW!

Will you be with bikes or 4WD?
As my wife and I are doing the same, we arrive in Halifax end June/beginning of July and we will go first west (obviously to the meeting bier) and then south... also on a RTW!
I'll pm you about this!

Fantastic Mister Fox 12 Mar 2014 04:35

Me and Mrs Fox will be there, also on RTW. Although we have been taking it pretty easy so far as we've been enjoying the snow season in Whistler for te start of our trip. Up to alaska in May/June then Back to BC for a couple of months then after the Naskup Meeting we'll start traveling south to Argentina.

see you there

Oo-SEB-oO 12 Mar 2014 07:19

this is just great!
it's almost like a RTW family reunion.... bier

OzMatt 12 Mar 2014 11:23

I'll be there!

Just joined HU and will be signing up for the meeting shortly. I'm a serial volunteer so I'll be putting my hand up to get involved. I'm an RN in Australia - is it OK if I volunteer for first aid?

I have bought an R80 in San Diego and this year is part one of the America's - next year it's south.

Looking forward to meeting everyone.

Matt

stevedo 25 Mar 2014 08:34

We also plan to be there. Starting our RTW in Anchorage on June 18th (flying in from the UK). Definitely a RTW theme evolving here :mchappy:

Absolutely! And anything else you like - we have few injuries as there is little riding on-site at the event! :) Sunstroke, maybe... but it's always good to have someone on call if needed - you just never know.

See you there!

Looking forward to seeing old friends and meeting new friends at HUBB BC
Here are some photos from last year.

Hi Grant,

Jo and I have had a great time at HU meetings in Aus and the US so we are looking forward to our first Canadian gathering. From what we can see from the other side of the world, the venue looks fantastic and we are well advanced in planning a circuitous route through the mountains to make the best of it.

From our experience, these meetings are the best place to gather information and make the contacts that will prove invaluable along the way. I am sure Nakusp BC will introduce us to many new friends but, hopefully, a few of our old amigos will be there as well.

Regards, Mike and Jo Hannan

Hi Mike and Jo, where will you be travelling from to get to Nakusp?

Just registered and paid, so no backing out now!

L84toff 1 Apr 2014 23:31

This is shaping up to be a real RTW HUBB meeting. Very exciting. We're hoping on arriving a day or two early, get a good spot that way ;)

trilliumliz 20 May 2014 20:43

Looking forward to it!

This will be my first time at Nakusp - but not at HUBB meetings. Excited to be part of this, have heard so much about it and the beautiful setting. It will be at the start of my year+? long travels to South America.

Can't wait!

We're super excited to be coming the Nakusp HU! Especially after reading Grant's comment on the awesome roads and scenery. Can't wait!

We'll be speaking on a couple of topics and looking forward to sharing information!

I would love to make it to the event, but it will be a last minute thing due to other issues. Is there last minute registration and campsites available?

Thanks,

Absolutely! Camping is NO issue - we have the entire campsite - and registration at the door is fine.

See you there!

Thanks for the info Grant. I live just a few miles from Kimberley so would be coming over the Grey Creek pass, across the lake on the ferry, up to Kaslo and over the twisty bit of 31A into New Denver and then up the road into Nakusp. It will make for a nice ride and a good chance to sort out my new Uly.

To register, or not

Can anyone help me out with regards to registering, or not, when on an extended trip?

We would like to attend, and are happy to present, however our attendance, given we'll be coming from NY, is not certain.

At this stage, I would put us at a 77.3% attendance certainty; do we register and risk a no show (but inform Grant as soon as possible if that's the case), or wait until the last minute?

Which one is preferable, given our situation?

Thanks, Rob.

Gipper 24 Jun 2014 18:35

Hi Rob,

I normally book last minute before the 'cut off' as my work schedule is constantly changing and Im on call 24/7 with a rescue team.

In your situation Id probably turn up last minute, but its your call.

Grant and Susan have been doing HUBB meetings long enough to understand if you cant make it, 'shit happens' when you are on the road, if you cant make it, it would be polite to let them know with a quick email if you are presenting so they can fill the space with another presentation or workshop

Here's a thought: why not continue up hwy31 past Kaslo, through Meadow Creek and the unsaved section up to Trout Lake City, which allows you to then loop back down to Nakusp. Awesome little route.

As Gipper said, but if you're presenting there are issues - we may have a full schedule, we may have lots of space for more, it's hard to say. We really need to be 98.7% sure to put you on the schedule. So, best I guess, is 2 weeks out, register to present if you're confident you'll be there. If not just register on the day if you make it, and ask if there's room for another presentation or two.

Hope to see you there!

First Timer

Hello fellow travelers,
This HU meet has caught my attention and now a goal for my first trip back on my bike after breaking my leg in Dec 2013. Hopefully I am not being over ambitious as re-joining my Tiger 800XC in Ft Lauderdale, FL next week and it looks like a bit of a haul all the way up there! However, enthusiasm will prevail.
Excited and looking forward to my first HU Meet (I'd better get that routing finalized).

Sorting out a few handling problems with the G/S but it's running well.

Anyone planning on being around Glacier NP in the week before let me know and we can ride together - that way I've got someone else to blame whan I get lost.

We just came up through there. Not sure getting lost is much of a risk...unless you mean getting lost in the views ;).

We're on our way to Alaska and maybe the Dempster if weather allows, then back down for the meeting.

Have fun on your ride.

With this weather, just hang it on your tent.:rain:

Grant Johnson 21 Aug 2014 07:26

Just for the record we had ONE 10 minute shower today, (it was a doozy though!) And the weather forecast is pretty good - chance of showers Thursday/Friday, and the rest good!

Don't know if there is a laundromat in town, I'm sure Zigy will let us know if he found one, and we'll let you know if he didn't!:censored:

Lonesome George 23 Aug 2014 07:04

Sounds like the meeting is going really well. Just wanted to post a message to let people, who remember me giving a talk there in 2010, know that I now have a book published about my trip - with the help of The Ted Simon Foundation.

'Gone Riding' is available on kindle as the easiest way for North Americans to get a copy. And please do - I'm really nice about Canada! :)

Does anyone know the dates for the meeting in Nakusp 2015?? I missed it this year and I'm not making the same mistake again.....However I have to book my next years holidays in October.

If anyone has any info, that would be great?c?

L84toff 26 Aug 2014 01:02

Laundry

To answer my own question, in case someone wants to know for next year. There is indeed a laundromat with some front loading washers just a short walk from the campground by the Esso gas stn.

Proudman 26 Aug 2014 22:37

Great meeting. I really learned a lot.
Ziggy gave a URL where we could download his list. I lost it so I'm hoping someone else got it.
And is there a place to see photos?

Thank you!

We had a wonderful time in Nakusp. It was our first meeting and we will certainly attend others. Made somne wonderful new friends. Special thanks to Gene of Nakusp who took about 18 of us on a challenging trail ride. Some of the 15 who survived felt a real sense of accomplishment. Thanks to Grant, Susan, Ekke and Audrey and all the volunteers for a job well done!

We would (as always) like to thank everybody involved (volunteers, fellow presenters, Grant & Susan and Ekke & Audrey) and certainly to all you guys who took the effort to stay up to be there for our presentation late saturday evening. We were both really tired and I think most of you also from a couple of really interesting days but still you gave present, so thank you for that!

We didn't know what to expect from the surroundings, but we really enjoyed travelling around Nakusp and highway 3 is indeed very beautiful, we recommend it to anybody who will attend next year!

I'm looking at attending Nakusp in 2015 and I'm wondering if anyone brings their kids. My son ( 15 ) and I are planning on doing a 9000km trip from Vancouver Island to San Diego and zig zag back hitting all the MLB parks along the way. I think this would be a good experience for him as he has shown a keen interest in motorcycle travel.

Just wondering if this is adult only or if teenagers are accepted?

Hi, no problem, teenagers are fine! It's not ideal for young children as there are NO facilities for them, and we have VERY few come, it's primarily adults - after all, you need a motorcycle license to really get anything out of the event.

This year a man and his 14-15 year old son came and had a great time, and will be back next year.

Under 16 is free, over 16 is regular price.

See you next year!
