To buy or not to buy

I am interested in buying a used Falcon 2008 with 26,000 km on it, here in Costa Rica. Everything here costs twice as much as anywhere else so it will cost almost $7000 after I pay it off with interest, my question is: is this bike something that is worth investing in can be worked on and kept like new over the long haul.Anyone have any input? My other alternatives are to buy a much older bike, or a much cheaper chinese 400, or pay a lot more for a newer one.

Hey Philip,

I am moving down to Costa Rica, near Cartago in June. I am hoping to get a bike to ride, also. The 400 looks like it would fit the bill. Let me know how your shopping is going. Any advice?

Rodney

Hi Raaaay. Sent the same in response your PM, but figured I'd post it here in case it can help someone.

A guy in Santiago, Chile makes them. He cuts and presses the plexiglass on site. If you called a Honda dealer in Santiago or contacted the hubb community there, I'd imagine that you could find his contact info.

I do not know if he can ship elsewhere in S. Am. He does not speak English.

cheers

The 400 is a great machine, sometimes I wish I´d bought a second-hand one instead of a brand new Tornado, though I still love my XR250! Thing with the Tornado is it really hates being loaded up, if you have a fair amount of stuff go with the Falcon. For Tornado pack like a cyclist and youll have a blast on the dirt roads. For highway and long days on the tarmc I´d definitely go for the 400. Finding accessories is fairly straight-forward if your in Brazil, Chile or Argentina, not sure about central America. For Chile, give me a PM and I can help you to find the stuff you need (I know because I´ve already looked!)

Piston kit for Honda NX4 Falcon

Hi, really glad I can see this bike does exist in other parts of the world!
I've managed to damage the cylinder and piston and mine - stupidly running with no oil!
Really struggling to get parts in the UK though.
I'm fairly confident it is almost identical to the XR400 but does anyone know if an XR 1mm oversize or big bore kit will be OK for the NX4?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks!

ive got a CL400 and that also uses the XR400 engine, I am also interested in the piston kit, I have asked about it on here before but no one seems to have a difinative answer

I'd try someone at American Honda.
Contact Us - Honda Powersports

Motorcycle Division
American Honda Motor Co., Inc.
P.O. Box 2200
Torrance, CA 90509-2200
Mail stop: 100-4C-7B
Telephone: (866) 784-1870

From there they could put you in touch with a tech in the Brazilian division.

The CC's on these bikes may be the same as the XR versions but I seriously doubt they share ANY parts. This based on following model evolutions on MANY bikes from the big four over the last 40 years.

If the bores are EXACTLY the same then you could use an XR piston ... but I'm betting it will be slightly different. But if re-boring, then you're OK to use a 1st over piston if there are no interference issues with piston crown vs. Valves.

Good luck!

TIP: On a small single run hard ... check oil EVERY DAY! dohdohdohdohdoh

New Nx400 owner

Hey everyone,

Does anyone know if the nx400 leaks gas into the oil if
The petcock is left open??

I just purchased a 2010 nx400 in chile.
I'm about to take it south for a few days travel,
and want to make sure eveything is in order.

I stupidly left the petcock open overnight, and I have
no idea how careful the previous owner was.

Thanks, Mike

A N Y bike can leak gas into the crankcase and contaminate the oil. It's easy to know ... look at your oil. If, after ten minutes running, it turns a sort of Baby Puke (or Poo) green or light brown, you've got a problem.

If oil is shiny and black as usual ... no worries! It's doubtful fuel will get past your float needle valve.

It's the float needle located in the float bowl that stops fuel flowing.
If debris gets in there, fuel can leak as valve tip won't seal. Or if little rubber tip on needle valve is worn ... then fuel can leak through then too.

ALWAYS ... no matter what ... shut pet cock off at night ... especially if parked inside! If you forget ... no big deal, chances are good your float needle valve is operational and will do it's job and no fuel will flow.

If you ever do get a crankcase full of fuel ... do not ride the bike far (or at all).
Drain oil first, put in NEW oil. :thumbup1:

Also, on some bikes, what can happen is that fuel can drain out of Carb overflow vent/tube ... which is better than having it go back into air box and then migrate down into crankcase. Fuel leaking out onto the ground is no big deal ...unless bike is INSIDE ... near a water heater, furnace or other ignition source :eek3: :devil2::mad2:

I have not had any issues in getting bits for my NX4 in the UK, as basically everything seems to have come from either a Dominator or XR400!! The motor is a little down on power compared to the XR400, but nothing that reworking airbox, exhaust and carb would not sort, but is it worth it...? MY little NX4 will do 70mpg fully laden across France AND Spain at 60-65mph, yet can still trundle down a UK motorway, still fully laden, at 75mph. :thumbup1: And after that, it will allow me to go trail riding anywhere i have pointed it...

Drop me PM with your email details and I can send you a pdf of the parts manual.

Me too...

I cannot remember when I last really bothered switching fuel off on a bike... Probably a BSA Bantam, circa 1973!! :-)

Hi all, my brother and I are travelling the Americas on two identical falcon 400 nx. They have both developed bad cases of clutch slip. If you are in 5 gear and give it full throttle it will simply slip. anybody else had this problem?
Also getting sick of the disposable air filters as they can be hard to find. Anyone got any solutions for swapping then out for something else?
