Honda Nx 400 Falcon Information

This is directed to the 5 people that own this bike in the entire world.

I love this bike and it is the only affordable NEW Honda in Costa Rica. It has proven to be a really nice ride but I am having an impossible time trying to set this bike up for a long trip through south america. It seems no one has ever heard of or can help with this particular model.

I am seeking anyone who has saddle bag or luggage solutions for my bike and what your experience has been on long trips.

All help is appreciated

Saddlebags by ARANDU

ARANDU is an Argentine company established in 1987 with stores in several major cities. Arandu sells all manner of leather goods, boots and horse tack.

I had leather backs sewed on the bags to stiffen them up a bit and had waterproof inserts made, so I can pull the inserts out with all my gear to keep in my tent or hotel room.

In dangerous or isolated areas, when bush camping, I have been known to tie a light cord from my bike to my body, sleep on my hammock and just keep the bike loaded so I can get out of Dodge fast.

I have ridden these bags through 6 South American countries, 21,000 K over every type of road, trail, path and river bed imaginable. No problems. I fell many times, once on pavement and the saddle bag protected me and my bike from serious damage. I was able to patch the bag with cloth and eventually replaced the cloth with a leather patch.

Elisa used a saddle bag and tail bag set from CORTECH on her XR250 Honda Tornado, (she just upgraded to a Falcon, so there are at least 8 of us now) and she has convinced me to "upgrade" to the CORTECH bags too...Will let you know how the CORTECH set works out. Women!!! xfiltrate

Thank you

I am glad to talk to someone that has experience with the falcon. I have heard to Cortech bags fit. Do have an idea what model bag she has? I am planning a trip to the US and could get them there. In Costa Rica those bags are $400. I live in the mountains and have abused the hell out of this bike and it just keeps on going strong. In the 400 range this might be the only bike I have found that meets all my needs.

Again, thanks for the info and i will start some research on the Cortech.

Cortech by Tourmaster: www.tourmaster.com

We both now have Tour Master Cortech Tail Bag and Saddlebags (tribag system) We have in black the sport tailbag and the saddlebags as a tribag system. cost is less then $400.00 US see web site.

Hey I served as a US Peace Corps volunteer in Puerto Limon, Costa Rica for two years. What are you doing there? I was in Costa Rica VI and the students and I built the, now very deteriorated basketball court, in front of colegio de Limon where I taught. Pura Vida...

I also have photos to be put on display at the National Museum of Costa Rica and could use some help to co-ordinate the exhibit.

YES, the NX400 Honda Falcon is a very dependable, low maintenance bike that looks great rolling up to the casino at an Intercontinental Hotel, or rolling down miles of gravel trails to the river. It is very light, compared to most touring bikes, gearing seems just right, although, without meaning to, I have done huge wheelies. (see the Brazilians on Honda Falcons NX400 on YouTube.com ) you will not believe what you see... We crossed Paso de Hama at 5000 meters and simply removed air filters to summit and had no problems other than a little lugging due to fuel mixture resulting from very thin air...did I say, I really like that it is a one banger.... xfiltrate

Hello hyperman

That brings back some happy memories... I passed through the Christo Redentor tunnel on my Falcon in 2001.

Completely missed seeing Aconcagua because of cloud.

I don't think I've ever been hotter in my life than I was leaving Santiago that morning.. and I don't think I've ever been colder in my life than the border crossing on the other side of the tunnel that same afternoon. The Argentine passport official gave me his copy of 'Clarin' to stuff inside my jacket and trousers to try to get warm.

A perfect day. I hope you've had a few of them too..

Question, how did you manage to fit a rack for the top box? the racks they sell here wouldn't last for very long.
Tip, place a piece of rubber ahead of the rear wheel to protect the shock. Use fork gaiters
installed (with relay ) a second horn, good in the city.
zip locked a can of tyre puncture foam below the rear left frame rail, placed in a piece of tyre inner tube first
cheers
Charlie

Hi I tried that with the saddlebags using an oven glove, it still melted, my advice to you would be to find a nearby welder and show them what you want, they'll figure out something and it won't cost much.

glasswave 13 Aug 2009 03:58

You could simply have an enfield style rear rack frabricated like I did in Chile:

http://coursedocs.slcc.edu/visart/nr...ucia--back.jpghttp://rwdacad01.slcc.edu/academics/...ucia--back.jpg

http://rwdacad01.slcc.edu/academics/...ucia--left.jpg

http://coursedocs.slcc.edu/visart/nr...ucia--left.jpg

This style rack will fit one full size back pack on each side and a day pack up top leaving your pillion free or you could attach any type of box. I believe even a 70mm ammo box would fit. The side racks ca be removed separately from the top rack and the back rest is removable as well, allowing for a number of possible configurations. It also have space for two six liter fuel jugs.

Glasswave: Very creative rack and it looks functional

Thanks for the great photos of your very creative rack for the NX400. Chris Scott of the Sahara might even appreciate a photo for any new additions of his book.

My humble opinion, your NX 400 rack looks tough enough for Mexico, central and South America. Keep us posted with updates. thanks

glasswave 15 Aug 2009 06:50

Functional yes, but creative no.

It is a total knock off on the Idian Enfield rack design. The only creative parts were resolving the attachment and reiforcement points. This style rack is pretty much standard issue on all the Enfields in India where function and flexibilty is paramount. No Indian would settle for a custom rack designed to only propane bottles. He wants to carry bags, timber, a bundle of reeds, caraboard boxes or a couple of pre teens.

I think this is one reason spontaneous moto touring is so popular in India. With almost all Enfields having this standard issue rack, there is next to no bike prep needed. Simply make a cash deal on an Enfield (no paperwork required), visit a mechanic (Enfields always need something), lash your pack to one side, the Israeli girl´s pack to the other, put her on the pillion and off ya go. Sans riding gear, bags, boxes or anything, if only helmets were easy to find.

PS -- these are internet photos for illustration and are not of me --
I don´t rid in shorts and sandles or w/o a helmet for that matter.

Falcon Tyres

Hi,

I have just bought a 2008 Falcon in Salvador, Brazil. The Falcon model ceased production in 2008 by the way. I just had the tyres replaced and as I recall there was an inner tube. I believe that is normal for spoked wheels anyway.
Good luck with your trip!

I am not so sure about that. Honda Chile still sells them.

Honda

Yes, the tires are tubed. You can have spoked wheels that take tubless tires, but the tend to only come on the largest of adv touring bikes.

Both are right. Honda doesn't sell new Falcons in Brazil, but they still produce this bike for export. In Brazil we have the EURO 5 emission standards for motorcycles and the old engine used on the Falcon doesn't fit in those emission standards.

Bought in Santiago - Chile

Bought in honda dealer in the boulevard "Las Condes" in Santiago.
They seem to have at least 2 or 3 of them (2nd hand) at any time in that shop.

I liked mine a lot. I couldn;t afford anything bigger.
I regreat not having set-up a screen for it as the high wind of the Attacama desert were a pain in the a...

I ceased the engine in Paraguay (hadn't checked the oil level and had been losing oil due to hot/dry weather). Luckely we were only 120 kms from Brasilian border and original parts arrived on next day delivery. 7 days and £600 later I had a new engine which never worked as well as the original.

I would recomend that bike for sure.

For luggages I had simple Oxford Throw over panniers and a big dry bag laid accross back seat and panniers.
The small tank was a bit of a pain (I think only about 15 litres) and I had to get Jerrycan to be on the safe side.
The bike would travel happily at 130 km/h for long period of time.

will try and upload a few pics.

After years with Vstrom... I sold that off for a 2001 NX4...

Just a weeks with this bike... The only complaint I have for this bike is the wind buffeting issue... In real need of a Windscreen.. I have asked around... most probably will get a screen for it..

Anyway this bike is rare and cant google much bout it... mostly in Brazil and i cant understand it :(

The spec of the bike is similar to XR 4 except this have a "Magic Button" :thumbup1: but I will like to know is it possible to mount a XR4 Exhaust on this bike without modification?

Honda NX4i Falcon 2013

Honda relaunched the old Falcon in Brazil. After stopping selling it in Brazil in 2009, they are now going to sell it again. The only real changes appears to be the plastics around the fuel tank and a different muffler.

The Pros.
Now the bike have fuel injection and meets the Euro 3 emissions standards.

The cons.
Still have the same old defects from the 1999 model, just 5 speed gearbox, still don't have ABS, now uses a sh*tty digital panel, and costs stunning US$ 9350 / 7600 € in Brazil.

NX4s in Madagascar

1 Attachment(s)
Hello fellow NX4 riders.
I've just joined HU because I have heaps of trouble finding info on my bike and also I read a few posts in the past that I may have been able to help with if people ask the same questions again. Also I'm looking for a service manual at the moment if anyone has a link.

My Misses and I both have 2010 NX4s that we has shipped over from Brazil to Madagascar were we are working at the moment. It took a few months to get them but we have now just completed 2 years with the bikes and would not trade them for anything else in a place like this. They are the perfect 3rd World tourer in everyway. At home we both have road bikes.
Our NX4 touring gear includes Enduristan tank and saddle bags, Sena SMH10 Bluetooth coms and home made rear racks. They also have Leo Vince slip on mufflers which totally transformed the bikes. The standard exhaust left me always looking for torque the little 400 djdoesn't have. There is some other minor changes done as well and the bikes very much remain a work in progress. Another thing I haven't been able get yet is after market air filters.

The plan is to eventually do an across Asia tour when work runs out here in Mada. Through and around India, through SE asia and down to Australia where we come from (last bit by boat of course).

Anyway. I'm here to share hopefully some usefull info back and forwards with you guys.

Hello Khaitronic,

The NX4 motor comes from the old Honda XR400 so as far as I'm aware most parts should work. Except maybe air filters because the air box may be different. I'm not sure as I don't have a XR400 handy to check out.
So my bike has an exhaust made for a XR400 but I couldn't find another one for the Wife's bike so we put on one made for a Suzuki DR400 which was almost identical.
Hard to tell and difference between the two bikes but they are so much better than the original exhausts. I just cut the pipe off and slipped the new units on. You need to weld a holder for the spring.

Most noticable diffennce is the torque. I was alway having trouble at low speeds picking along bad roads. 3rd gear too high and 2nd gear too low. Now i just stay in 3rd. I'm not sure about Fuel economy but loseing the old exhaust drops the bike overall weight significantly so that has to help. I didn't actually weigh the old exhausts before I threw them away but they felt like 10 kgs and the new ones like 2 kgs. That is a lot on a bike that only weighs 150kgs to start with.
Top speed again I'm not sure about but at 5500 rpm I'm doing 110kph. Compare that against your bike's speed Vs rpm. I asume we have the same sprockets. In general I believe the bike performs better but I can't measure it.
Another major benifit if you live in a place like Madagascar is being heard. There is not much road sense with a lot of the locals here and they just wander all over the roads and the roads have more walkers and push carts on them than motorised vehicle. The original was way too quiet and I was forever beeping at people. Now they turn there heads an look at me to see what's coming at them.
So If you asked if they were worth it I'd say definately.

BTW- The website you suggest didn't have a link to it. please post it again.

Here are some old pics. The mesh attached in one photo is my home made divider to keep the throwover saddle bag cool from the muffler.

Khaitronic 17 Aug 2012 19:15

Thats a VERY NICE LOOKING EXHAUST !!!

Yeah this bike is base on the XR400... just need some welding of the holder to fit an XR4 exhaust... but didn't knew tat it can fit a DR400 exhaust well too...

In my country Singapore, you can spot XR 400 and DR400Z almost anywere... but not the Falcon... which is very very very Rare ;)...

I am planning to have my Exhaust change very soon... so thank a lot for this information... i can have wide choice since now i knew it can fit a DR exhaust

I cant even find part source for Falcon here... all are taken from XR400 catalog...

Does anyone know if the Falcon nx4 will accept the xr400 to 440cc rebuild kits that are commonly available in the states??

My Falcon could use a rebuild & I'd love to have the extra power. These kits are fairly cheap here in the states and come with everything you need.

Also, could I bring these parts into Chile w/o much trouble from customs?

thx

Khaitronic 19 Aug 2012 18:51

To buy or not to buy

I am interested in buying a used Falcon 2008 with 26,000 km on it, here in Costa Rica. Everything here costs twice as much as anywhere else so it will cost almost $7000 after I pay it off with interest, my question is: is this bike something that is worth investing in can be worked on and kept like new over the long haul.Anyone have any input? My other alternatives are to buy a much older bike, or a much cheaper chinese 400, or pay a lot more for a newer one.

Hey Philip,

I am moving down to Costa Rica, near Cartago in June. I am hoping to get a bike to ride, also. The 400 looks like it would fit the bill. Let me know how your shopping is going. Any advice?

Hi Raaaay. Sent the same in response your PM, but figured I'd post it here in case it can help someone.

A guy in Santiago, Chile makes them. He cuts and presses the plexiglass on site. If you called a Honda dealer in Santiago or contacted the hubb community there, I'd imagine that you could find his contact info.

I do not know if he can ship elsewhere in S. Am. He does not speak English.

ridetheworld 2 Sep 2014 01:44

The 400 is a great machine, sometimes I wish I´d bought a second-hand one instead of a brand new Tornado, though I still love my XR250! Thing with the Tornado is it really hates being loaded up, if you have a fair amount of stuff go with the Falcon. For Tornado pack like a cyclist and youll have a blast on the dirt roads. For highway and long days on the tarmc I´d definitely go for the 400. Finding accessories is fairly straight-forward if your in Brazil, Chile or Argentina, not sure about central America. For Chile, give me a PM and I can help you to find the stuff you need (I know because I´ve already looked!)

Piston kit for Honda NX4 Falcon

Hi, really glad I can see this bike does exist in other parts of the world!
I've managed to damage the cylinder and piston and mine - stupidly running with no oil!
Really struggling to get parts in the UK though.
I'm fairly confident it is almost identical to the XR400 but does anyone know if an XR 1mm oversize or big bore kit will be OK for the NX4?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks!

stuxtttr 28 Sep 2015 22:15

ive got a CL400 and that also uses the XR400 engine, I am also interested in the piston kit, I have asked about it on here before but no one seems to have a difinative answer

mollydog 29 Sep 2015 04:03

I'd try someone at American Honda.
Contact Us - Honda Powersports

Motorcycle Division
American Honda Motor Co., Inc.
P.O. Box 2200
Torrance, CA 90509-2200
Mail stop: 100-4C-7B
Telephone: (866) 784-1870

From there they could put you in touch with a tech in the Brazilian division.

The CC's on these bikes may be the same as the XR versions but I seriously doubt they share ANY parts. This based on following model evolutions on MANY bikes from the big four over the last 40 years.

If the bores are EXACTLY the same then you could use an XR piston ... but I'm betting it will be slightly different. But if re-boring, then you're OK to use a 1st over piston if there are no interference issues with piston crown vs. Valves.

Good luck!

TIP: On a small single run hard ... check oil EVERY DAY! dohdohdohdohdoh

New Nx400 owner

Hey everyone,

Does anyone know if the nx400 leaks gas into the oil if
The petcock is left open??

I just purchased a 2010 nx400 in chile.
I'm about to take it south for a few days travel,
and want to make sure eveything is in order.

I stupidly left the petcock open overnight, and I have
no idea how careful the previous owner was.

Thanks, Mike

mollydog 6 Jan 2016 00:19

A N Y bike can leak gas into the crankcase and contaminate the oil. It's easy to know ... look at your oil. If, after ten minutes running, it turns a sort of Baby Puke (or Poo) green or light brown, you've got a problem.

If oil is shiny and black as usual ... no worries! It's doubtful fuel will get past your float needle valve.

It's the float needle located in the float bowl that stops fuel flowing.
If debris gets in there, fuel can leak as valve tip won't seal. Or if little rubber tip on needle valve is worn ... then fuel can leak through then too.

ALWAYS ... no matter what ... shut pet cock off at night ... especially if parked inside! If you forget ... no big deal, chances are good your float needle valve is operational and will do it's job and no fuel will flow.

If you ever do get a crankcase full of fuel ... do not ride the bike far (or at all).
Drain oil first, put in NEW oil. :thumbup1:

Also, on some bikes, what can happen is that fuel can drain out of Carb overflow vent/tube ... which is better than having it go back into air box and then migrate down into crankcase. Fuel leaking out onto the ground is no big deal ...unless bike is INSIDE ... near a water heater, furnace or other ignition source :eek3: :devil2::mad2:

I have not had any issues in getting bits for my NX4 in the UK, as basically everything seems to have come from either a Dominator or XR400!! The motor is a little down on power compared to the XR400, but nothing that reworking airbox, exhaust and carb would not sort, but is it worth it...? MY little NX4 will do 70mpg fully laden across France AND Spain at 60-65mph, yet can still trundle down a UK motorway, still fully laden, at 75mph. :thumbup1: And after that, it will allow me to go trail riding anywhere i have pointed it...

Drop me PM with your email details and I can send you a pdf of the parts manual.

Hi all, my brother and I are travelling the Americas on two identical falcon 400 nx. They have both developed bad cases of clutch slip. If you are in 5 gear and give it full throttle it will simply slip. anybody else had this problem?
Also getting sick of the disposable air filters as they can be hard to find. Anyone got any solutions for swapping then out for something else?
