5/9/98 The last one out please turn out the lights, i.e. tourist. Despite the weather today 22 degrees, the tourist season in Scandinavia is over, we are already finding it hard to find campgrounds open, all holiday spots are closed, only the city van parks are open and some of them close the middle of September. Around the north of Lake Vanern to stay at Mariestad for the night.

6/9/98 Nipped down to Boras where Helena and Michael (a couple we met through our son) showed us around their town for the afternoon. The rather large town, but with typical Swedish houses, ponds and walks. Neither of them owns a motorcar preferring to bicycle around town or catch public transport for longer distances. It seems half the world (all of Asia) is moving away from bicycles to motorised personal vehicles while southern Scandinavia and the Netherlands is moving back to them. Tax seems to be a big reason not to buy motor vehicles in Sweden, parking and garaging, petrol and insurance. Stayed the night at Helena’s, our first double bed since starting this trip.
