1150GS final drive bearing
 

as you may have read on another thread our super reliable BM (no laughing simmo)as thrown its guts from the final drive bearing. we are now holed up in Comodora Rivadavia, Argentina trying to get the bike to BA.

any hints and tips on replacing this will be gladly received.

by the way Chris Scott...before you reply with some useless info, please note its not my lardy arse that´s caused it but a BMW design fault.

saw a nice KTM 950 in black the other day, it uses a chain for its final drive system....how practical is that ?

The schwinehundt de alec is at least 10,000kms away, surely the antique cant spread its evil spirits that far.

I believe the solution is to stuff a rag in the top of the petrol tank and light it....this will ensure no future final drive failures and no further encounters with teutonically efficient Bullshit Miracle Workers.

I was going to say you burn yours and I'll burn mine....then I though about that Welsh soccer fan that cut off his own gonads last week, so You burn yours and I'll say why didnt you fix it!

As for the chain drive, they are just so inconvenient, I mean why lube when you could rebuild!

BMW owners psychological support (BOPS) group is with you!

No, not travelling at the moment, just doing the bike up: front end- forks, cast iron discs, lines, calipers, alternator, timing chain. Oh, and carbs. '82 airhead. All being well, though, South of France and Italy in a week or so.

Tell me- something else I don't quite understand here- you're Welsh Bob as well as Spanish Bob?

decisions, decisions......cut off my nads ?, set fire to the bike ?.....

used my last match when i started smoking so the fire bit is over..

as for my nads....perhaps i could cut them off and install them into the final drive bearing to replace the already worn out and shattered balls...i´m sure they would prove more reliable and durable than the ones that those ´bad motorcycle workers´ use.

the other option is to convert the all back end with a chain drive system, thereby making it more reliable, lighter, cheaper and easier to spot the encroaching imminent destruction.

i should not be bitter and twisted...only had 3 adjustments to paralever bearings, 4 oil leaks, 1 paralever bearing replacement and 1 collapsed bearing in 75000km...that equates to only 3 good quality chain sets.

then again everything was fine untill the bike spent time living next to the 'messenger from hell..100GS' of simmos in Istanbul...ever since then i have been followed around by black crows with 666 tattoed on their heads.

the bike hasn´t arrived by hearse yet so all my problems may be over before i know it....TBC

Dont know the words I am afraid, the last time I heard it was when a couple of Yorkshire men were staggerring back to my place indulging in their cultural heritage, one of whom knows very well who he is! my head still hurts...But I am sure a friendly yorkshire man should be able to sing it for you, probably while making jokes about the intelligence of rugby fans..mistake noted.

BTW Bob a forein R80 was heading to Melbourne about 300ks from town it seems the gearbox has lunched it..maybe the schwindhundt de alec's evil spirits are omnipresent, then again it could be the schwindhundt de ralphino that is causing your problems...where's the stake? we need to burn that one..oh! someone has already.

Goggs, before I get totally paranoid about final drive bearing trouble, how many k's did you have up on your bike before it's rear end crapped itself?

hey big red, i just got myself signed out of re-hab and i can confirm that all i did was wheel the bike out of the showroom.....¿¿

if i can be serious though the bike had done only 75000km, albeit most of it fully loaded, with some rough roads thrown in for good mearsure.

after researching the web i have found this to be common problem, even on some bikes with only 10-15000 km. the only thing to do is to carry a spare bearing and seal...or cut off your nads and set fire to them.
