Thanks Goggs, I think I can relax.
OK, I think that Simmo should write his name on his bike in big letters to make sure I don't accidentally park next to the rotten mongrel and catch it's filthy diseases. Yuk!
I'm on my fifth BM now, all of which I've admittedly flogged before getting up to 70,000 k's, and I haven't had a final drive bearing problem yet, (apart from the last one, an R1100S, which had a shaft drive problem at around 35,000k's, sadly enough, a few weeks after the new owner bought it. Not sure if it was the final drive bearing though.)
It hadn't given any signals of trouble previously, (honestly!) and I have heard that it was the result of being packed with the wrong kind of grease from new. It wasn't a huge or expensive problem at home, but I can imagine it being a drama on the road somewhere a long way northeast of Nar-Nar Goon.

And, Goggs, I can imagine that being stuck in Argentina with a buggared final drive bearing is a complete pain in the wherever, but it can't be bad enough to cut off any gonads, no matter who wins the futbal. I'm sure that your Espanol is improving, anyway.
Have you got it sorted yet?

Grant

forgot to mention it on this post but it´s in another.....

bike is sorted out, Javier of ´Dakar Motos´, part of HU community here in BA was fantastic, we did it together and after 5 hours, lunch in a restuarant and again attempts of liking ´mate´ we got the ole girl rolling again.

if you run an 1150 my suggestions are....change oil every 10000km (or earlier as you wish, only 250ml of oil) and avoid using synthetic oil. mineral is the one to go for EP90, it´s cheap and the recommended one.

hey simmo me old cocker spaniel, i´ve been experiencing that strange phenomomon of the back end of the bike wanting to go anti-clockwise and overtake the front on loose surfaces....the same thing you experienced in the snow of eastern turkey....i believe it to be the demonic spirits of the cardon god exorcising itself to corrupt any BMW virgin who should come near.

"He who wishes to see a demon should take the after-birth of a black she-cat, the offspring of a black she-cat, the first-born of a first-born, roast it in the fire, pulverize it, then fill his eyes with it, and he will see a demon. He must pour the powder into an iron tube and seal it with an iron signet, lest he come to harm."..... or ride a BMW.

simmo, lets face it your bike is posesed....first drown the beast within and then burn it, BOPS will help you dislodge the demons within you

A place where the drink is called "mate" fantastic, having a few mates with your mates...hic.

As for the schwindhunt I will have to get Tres Mon onto the job!

Yeah, 1150 and especially 1200 have more unreliable finals.

Old trick on 1100GSes is to change final drive oil every engine-oil change interval - every 10K kilometres. And i've seen the 1100GS that has 250K miles on the clock with stock final drive. Maybe this method helps on 1150 too? It's really easy and cheap to do it yourself, and i change gearbox oil at the same intervals too.

Cheers, Margus

still here in Buenos Aires, a genuine oil seal from england arrived today and still oil flows freely !!

any ideas what might be causing this to continue leaking ??....i will check the bevel box breather again tomorrow to see if it is clear, apart from that i´m lost on ideas.

off for some vodka now, it´s all i can think of doing!!

Vaat you neeed iz ze spezial toolz bob! Rang Phil the local Schwinhundt expert. He said that you must make sure the seal goes in dead flat. Its a tight fit so he had a special tool made to do it...which you probably dont have...he said if you put it in on an angle it wont work and you will have to fit a new seal..woops another hunderd dollars and 2 weeks...Make sure what ever you are using to seat it is very flat, otherwise it may not be seated correctly. Pulling it back out and refitting it usually stuffs the seal.

i suggested running a nice glob of slastic around the edges but that was met with the usual mechanics cry of stunned silence and references to geese and my being one!

Long Live the O-Ring chain.

Watched a mate throw away a 998 testastretta in a bears race on the weekend, last lap, last corner, dicing for 1st....they come apart quite easily!

Apple juice chasers go quite well with vodka and it makes being smashed feel healthy.

Oh and is it true that the final drive bearing in an 1150 is the same as that in an R75? If it is i am sure that it will provide BOPS with some more ammo.

good luck
