xtz660 oil levels.
 

this is an easy one... how much oil does my xtz 660 `96 take for an oil change,and what spec. oil would you recomend.. thanks..phil

I think its something like 3 ltrs if you replace the oil filter slighty less if you leave the filter in. BUT I always seem to put in nearly 4 ltrs to bring it to the dipstick level. Don't know why its like this but it dosen't seem to do it any harm.

As far as oil goes I use Castrol GPS semi synthetic 10w/40.

its a long story, but i cant get my disk drive working...I KNEW...you would save me... i drained the oil from bike and there was just over one litre...ouch, im hoping no damage done..cheers mate...phil.

you obviously did not drain oil from both drain bolts, one is in the frame, other down on the left side of the gearbox... One liter is not enough for the engine to work properly.. I usually add around 3 - 3.2 liters of oil when changing with filter replacement, around three dcl less without filter replacement... Use semishyntetic oil, i use ester blend Motul 15W-50.

My 96 XTZ (twin headlight 4MY) takes over 4 litres when I do a full filter and oil change.

Hi Tony, how do you know that you have to add 4 litres? Don't forget that you cannot measure the oil level unless you have been riding for at least 15-20 kilometers. So look in the book and fill up the quantity of oil that is mentioned.

I fill the bike with about 3 litres and then run if for a few minutes, then top it up, and run it again.

I do this increasing the time the bike runs for until no more goes in when the bike has run.

Then I take it for a ride about 10km and bring it home and check the levels again.

Every time I chnge the oil I also do the filter and take the lower pipe off that connects to the bottom of the engine to ensure it is completely emptied.

Tony, the only diference I can see is that I don't take the pipe off, but would this make 1 l. difference?
There's 1 thing you don't mention : after you have taken her out for a ride, how is the level?

Normally it hasn't moved at all - get home, leave it idling for a couple of minuted to settle down and check again.

This is the one thing about my XT600 that bugs me! How could Yamaha devise such a bloody complex system of checking the oil level. It should be so simple!!!!!!

ok the whole oil situation through me into a spin... my bike happily took 3.5 litres of oil, and i was checking the oil when the bike had been sitting for a while (as you normally would) now i find out you have to check the level after the bikes been running for 1o minutes....hmmmm....im glad ive brought the subject up.thanks lads..phil.

- obviously Yamaha reckon 3ls of oil is enough for the bike, but what I'm finding is when you pour this amount in it dosen't show on the dipstick. I guess that's because it all goes into the sump, or more than is supposed to anyway (I don't know why - anybody know?).
It would be ok to leave it like that but because nothing shows on the dipstick you won't know if the oil level starts to drop. So I keep filing until it comes up to the Max on the dipstick, this takes slightly less than 4Lts in total, and I leave it at that.

Thats my simple approach to oil changes.
