sounds great!!!

i work in germany, but spend a lot of time during summer in SA.
since i found this horizons web page my childhood dream ( riding a bike through africa ) started to come alive again.

problem is that most links and stories are uk or europe related......
i find it very difficult getting any good info on anything in SA that is not :censored: BMW related!!!!!!!

P.S. i'd like to buy a xt 600/660

Sounds good! Ive not heard of a club here, but theres definately enough of us around to start one! Theres at least 2 of us with trans Africa-by-Tenere trips under the belt too!

Hello,
I will be heading over to ZA. mid November 06. Will arrive in cape town and tour around for a few weeks( by car) then to Namibia, Botswana and Zambia(by xt600). Perhaps I could buy you guys a beer in exchange for some good route info upon my arrival in Cape Town?

Cheers,
Pawlie

Sounds Great!!!

Hi there guys.....
Pawlie, that wont be a problem,I recently did a sweep of southern africa and logged the whole route on the GPS with waypoints and points of interest.... How are you getting your bike down? Know a couple of shipping contacts that might be useful!

Hopefully we can get a riding club going,as we have so many great rides a stone's throw away..... You are aware that Nam,and Bot are cooking HOT that time of year, although the desert is busy as a local desert run to those areas is in full swing, sometimes with up to a 1000 riders.... Really something!

I also have a couple of mates that would look forward to getting something going in the cape, We are fairly new to the enduro thing, and could definately benifit from others experiances,Jim.

Look forward to further info!!!
Cheers Bryan:scooter:

bryan:

thenx, sounds like very good advise:helpsmilie: let's get together.

PARAMED1 2 Sep 2006 18:25

Thumping!!!

Hi there Stonerace...
Thanks for the quick reply, so have you got a bike yet? I could start looking this side if you want!! I recently picked up a '89 Tenere XTZ600 3aj myself, in good condition with fairly low milage for around R24 000..... Not cheap but, other than routine service and a new can NO real work required....

What sort of market are you in? You were looking for a Super T if I remember correctly!Very rare here, only ever seen 1!!

Would be keen to do a trip around the same time as you and pawlie... so mabe even travelling for a time together could be in the pipe line... Work dependant as I am in the Emergency Services so time off is difficult during the SILLY season!!

Thomas.
MOTO ZULU...... Have you got anything in stock??:(

To end off,I will have to buy a round as well..... If anything we should all get Pissed!

Warm regards
Bryan

Horizons Rocks

Man this is a great web page!!

Horizons Unlimited and all those who make this possible.......... I applaud you  !

Bryan:

Thanks for the warm regards my broe, and i would really like to take you up on that offer....um,,?, buying the bike i mean!

I've not even got a drivers lisence yet, but am very serious about getting one as soon as i get back from germany. Would really like some advise in this area as well. I'll be based in Strand.

Bike: xtz 600 or anything.
I'd really like to do some touring up to at least Lesotho and Swaziland and maybe beyond. More importent to me though would be getting into riding a bike and not getting heaps of km under the belt.
Bundu Bashing(is that how it's spelled.....argh who cares?) is the first word that comes into mind.

Thanx buy
Jacques

P.S: That trip in the pipe line sound like a good idea!
Just joking :nono:

PARAMED1 3 Sep 2006 08:18

Should'nt be to hard.

Hey Jacques.

Good news as I am in Muizenberg, so only a couple of km's differance!
Here the legislation is a joke, as you need to write a written learners test that will allow you to ride any cc capacity bike, which lasts up to a years duration..... The only limitation being that Legally you should'nt lift a Pinion rider as well!! As for the test you need to book months in advance as there is such a back log of new drivers, that when I checked last there was a 6 to 8 month waing list....... AFRICA.... Got to love it!

As for the riding experience, time in the saddle will tell. It's not IF you fall, But rather WHEN, I reckon!!! Well thats my experience anyways!!
As for the trail riding(BUNDU)/Bashing, Wingnut, the thread starter is a absolute NUT in finding trails to Explore...Never a dull moment with your heart in your mouth! Some great mountain routes in your neck of the woods, The boland range has some great Trails for 4x4's but are a breeze on a thumper.....

I have to agree that the south african web is overflowing with BMW(Bring Mechanic With)Jokes, sites but Yamaha is only really involved in MX and track sport,so not really worried about us Stalwart Veterans!! Try this site, www.flamesonmytank.co.za BM I am afraid but really quite good for the Novice!

As for the bike,I will start looking, keep you posted!

Thanx Bryan

chrispd 3 Sep 2006 13:29

I'm heading back to Cape Town at the end of the year and one of the aims is to get back into the bike riding (had an ancient xt250 for a while). Are there many XT600's around or is it going to take me months of searching (bearing in mind that the budget is not going to be to generous)?

I'd be keen to find a club for regular rides/weekends away...we'll be based in Durbanville

WINGNUT XT 7 Sep 2006 18:45

Great to see the interest!

Hey guys ,sound great looking forward to seeing you here! We also look forward to helping you with any advice ,tips etc, on touring in africa and around the Cape!

It would be awsome to have you guys round as our guests and taking you on some awesome out rides , not marked on the usual "tourists" routs and books!

Keep in touch ,all the best, ride safe!

Count me in

I live in Cape Town - and eager to join your club. I have just completed a rebuild of a 34L and I am eager to head out !

Pawlie 11 Sep 2006 17:50

Hello All,
I have been away from the internet for a week. Glad to hear folks chiming in here good luck with the club wingnut. And many thanks for the offer of route advice. I will be calling on you guys when I arrive in the Cape.

Since you guys are offering help/advice. I am interested in acquiring a Technitop brand roof tent. I'm kind of set on this brand because I have it on reliable advice that the Technitop would hold up well to Canadian weather conditions once home. So, would anyone have one of these for sale? or Could anyone help me with contact info for a dealer/shop in CapeTown that sells this brand? How much should I expect to pay?

Back to Bikes:
Paramed 1: Thanks for the warm welcome and I will consult with you about the GPS info. My wife and I will have nearly 3 weeks in ZA. with the car/tent set up. Then up to Namibia and on the bikes. I'm in emergency services as well. I'm a bucket head. So we should get on Famously! As stated before beers are on me.

Chrispd: My 86 xt600 (only 35 000Km) could be made available and the end of my trip (Dec. 24 2006). details available if interested.

Cheers,
Pawlie

stonerace 13 Sep 2006 22:11

i'll get the whisky then

info about getting that :censored: drivers lisence:

yes you were correct on having to wait so long for a appointment (thanx Bryan), further more.......i found out that i can only make this appointment personally.
that makes this whole excercise impossible.
i'll be arriving 22nd of nov. and can only do the test when i'm allready back in germany..............c'mon, 6 to 8 months just for an appointment is crazy my broe, that's allmost enough time to give birth

who can i bribe to sort this problem?
