sounds great!!!

i work in germany, but spend a lot of time during summer in SA.
since i found this horizons web page my childhood dream ( riding a bike through africa ) started to come alive again.

problem is that most links and stories are uk or europe related......
i find it very difficult getting any good info on anything in SA that is not :censored: BMW related!!!!!!!

P.S. i'd like to buy a xt 600/660

jim 1 Sep 2006 16:11

Sounds good! Ive not heard of a club here, but theres definately enough of us around to start one! Theres at least 2 of us with trans Africa-by-Tenere trips under the belt too!
Jim

Pawlie 1 Sep 2006 17:49

Hello,
I will be heading over to ZA. mid November 06. Will arrive in cape town and tour around for a few weeks( by car) then to Namibia, Botswana and Zambia(by xt600). Perhaps I could buy you guys a beer in exchange for some good route info upon my arrival in Cape Town?

Cheers,
Pawlie

PARAMED1 2 Sep 2006 07:27

Sounds Great!!!

Hi there guys.....
Pawlie, that wont be a problem,I recently did a sweep of southern africa and logged the whole route on the GPS with waypoints and points of interest.... How are you getting your bike down? Know a couple of shipping contacts that might be useful!

Hopefully we can get a riding club going,as we have so many great rides a stone's throw away..... You are aware that Nam,and Bot are cooking HOT that time of year, although the desert is busy as a local desert run to those areas is in full swing, sometimes with up to a 1000 riders.... Really something!

I also have a couple of mates that would look forward to getting something going in the cape, We are fairly new to the enduro thing, and could definately benifit from others experiances,Jim.

Look forward to further info!!!
Cheers Bryan:scooter:

stonerace 2 Sep 2006 16:39

it's rolling...

pawlie:

i'll buy the first round!!

i'm in pretty much the same shoes as you are and would also like to be there!

bryan:

thenx, sounds like very good advise:helpsmilie: let's get together.

for me middle to end november should be good.

PARAMED1 2 Sep 2006 18:25

Thumping!!!

Hi there Stonerace...
Thanks for the quick reply, so have you got a bike yet? I could start looking this side if you want!! I recently picked up a '89 Tenere XTZ600 3aj myself, in good condition with fairly low milage for around R24 000..... Not cheap but, other than routine service and a new can NO real work required....

What sort of market are you in? You were looking for a Super T if I remember correctly!Very rare here, only ever seen 1!!

Would be keen to do a trip around the same time as you and pawlie... so mabe even travelling for a time together could be in the pipe line... Work dependant as I am in the Emergency Services so time off is difficult during the SILLY season!!

Thomas.
MOTO ZULU...... Have you got anything in stock??:(

To end off,I will have to buy a round as well..... If anything we should all get Pissed!

Warm regards
Bryan

stonerace 2 Sep 2006 20:57

Horizons Rocks

Man this is a great web page!!

Horizons Unlimited and all those who make this possible.......... I applaud you  !

Bryan:

Thanks for the warm regards my broe, and i would really like to take you up on that offer....um,,?, buying the bike i mean!

I've not even got a drivers lisence yet, but am very serious about getting one as soon as i get back from germany. Would really like some advise in this area as well. I'll be based in Strand.

Bike: xtz 600 or anything.
I'd really like to do some touring up to at least Lesotho and Swaziland and maybe beyond. More importent to me though would be getting into riding a bike and not getting heaps of km under the belt.
Bundu Bashing(is that how it's spelled.....argh who cares?) is the first word that comes into mind.

Thanx buy
Jacques

P.S: That trip in the pipe line sound like a good idea!
Just joking :nono:

PARAMED1 3 Sep 2006 08:18

Should'nt be to hard.

Hey Jacques.

Good news as I am in Muizenberg, so only a couple of km's differance!
Here the legislation is a joke, as you need to write a written learners test that will allow you to ride any cc capacity bike, which lasts up to a years duration..... The only limitation being that Legally you should'nt lift a Pinion rider as well!! As for the test you need to book months in advance as there is such a back log of new drivers, that when I checked last there was a 6 to 8 month waing list....... AFRICA.... Got to love it!

As for the riding experience, time in the saddle will tell. It's not IF you fall, But rather WHEN, I reckon!!! Well thats my experience anyways!!
As for the trail riding(BUNDU)/Bashing, Wingnut, the thread starter is a absolute NUT in finding trails to Explore...Never a dull moment with your heart in your mouth! Some great mountain routes in your neck of the woods, The boland range has some great Trails for 4x4's but are a breeze on a thumper.....

I have to agree that the south african web is overflowing with BMW(Bring Mechanic With)Jokes, sites but Yamaha is only really involved in MX and track sport,so not really worried about us Stalwart Veterans!! Try this site, www.flamesonmytank.co.za BM I am afraid but really quite good for the Novice!

As for the bike,I will start looking, keep you posted!

Thanx Bryan

chrispd 3 Sep 2006 13:29

I'm heading back to Cape Town at the end of the year and one of the aims is to get back into the bike riding (had an ancient xt250 for a while). Are there many XT600's around or is it going to take me months of searching (bearing in mind that the budget is not going to be to generous)?

I'd be keen to find a club for regular rides/weekends away...we'll be based in Durbanville

WINGNUT XT 7 Sep 2006 18:45

Great to see the interest!

Hey guys ,sound great looking forward to seeing you here! We also look forward to helping you with any advice ,tips etc, on touring in africa and around the Cape!

It would be awsome to have you guys round as our guests and taking you on some awesome out rides , not marked on the usual "tourists" routs and books!

Keep in touch ,all the best, ride safe!

Petrol Cap 8 Sep 2006 19:21

Count me in

I live in Cape Town - and eager to join your club. I have just completed a rebuild of a 34L and I am eager to head out !

Pawlie 11 Sep 2006 17:50

Hello All,
I have been away from the internet for a week. Glad to hear folks chiming in here good luck with the club wingnut. And many thanks for the offer of route advice. I will be calling on you guys when I arrive in the Cape.

Since you guys are offering help/advice. I am interested in acquiring a Technitop brand roof tent. I'm kind of set on this brand because I have it on reliable advice that the Technitop would hold up well to Canadian weather conditions once home. So, would anyone have one of these for sale? or Could anyone help me with contact info for a dealer/shop in CapeTown that sells this brand? How much should I expect to pay?

Back to Bikes:
Paramed 1: Thanks for the warm welcome and I will consult with you about the GPS info. My wife and I will have nearly 3 weeks in ZA. with the car/tent set up. Then up to Namibia and on the bikes. I'm in emergency services as well. I'm a bucket head. So we should get on Famously! As stated before beers are on me.

Chrispd: My 86 xt600 (only 35 000Km) could be made available and the end of my trip (Dec. 24 2006). details available if interested.

Cheers,
Pawlie

stonerace 13 Sep 2006 22:11

i'll get the whisky then

info about getting that :censored: drivers lisence:

yes you were correct on having to wait so long for a appointment (thanx Bryan), further more.......i found out that i can only make this appointment personally.
that makes this whole excercise impossible.
i'll be arriving 22nd of nov. and can only do the test when i'm allready back in germany..............c'mon, 6 to 8 months just for an appointment is crazy my broe, that's allmost enough time to give birth

who can i bribe to sort this problem?
where's those corrupt african cops now?

please help

rooihond 14 Sep 2006 19:01

Cape Town XT club et al

Hi Wingnut and all.

Excellent idea on the XT club. I'm based in Botswana. There's a couple of XT600 s around. Lots of XT350, as the local police and even military used them. They're now starting to come into the market from auction.

Keep us posted.

Hey stonerace, here in Botswana the learners license is a formality - if you already have another drivers license. (Fill in form, pay approx ZAR40, and you get a learners valid for 6 moths). Unfortunately you have to be a Botswana resident as far as I know.

Rgds from Botswana

KTM Thumper welcome?

Hi Guys,
I have recently purchased a KTM DukeII and would be very interested to hear about an XT club in Cape Town. My mate has got the XT660X and we are always looking to ride. Please keep us posted.

WINGNUT XT 17 Sep 2006 17:55

Great to see it all coming together!

At some stage i will need to get your guys contact details (especially
) the locals so that we can start going on out rides etc.

Are those botswana xt350's costly? i know parameds chick is looking for one.
How does one go about purchasing them? who does one contact etc.

For all those interested i am busy building up a data base on xt specialists, in and around Cape Town and South Africa!

So hang in there guys there will be plenty of info for us xt junkies in S.A.

Well gotta run chat again soon.

Chris

rooihond 19 Sep 2006 06:08

Hi,

Is quite a process - you need to be a local to be able to go to auctions, usually they are quite knackered, but once in a while you get a good one.

The other pain is re-registering them in SA.

But I'll keep a lookout for them when the come up for auction

Rgds

Derek

WINGNUT XT 19 Sep 2006 19:12

Regarding your riding test.

Good news!!

If you want to speed thing up a little then you shoud visit one of the small towns in the country side, the ones we call "dorpies" usually the waiting list there is very short and you can sometimes do them on the day. It just envolves a trip to the country side and that is neve a bad thing , specially on an xt......and you needed an excuse!!

Try to get relatives or friens here to get a booking fo you that will speed things up alot, otherwise let me know and we will see what we can from this side to help you out.

Cheers

Hey Chris - haven't logged on for a while.
I live in Hout Bay - Cell No. 082 443 4580 - definately on for a beer so please give me a call.
I have had quite a 'learning experience' rebuilding a 34L but all good so far. I have too much play in the lower connecting rod of the swing arm. I have just spent the last couple of hours stripping it all down in an effort to replace the sleeve bushes only to find the bold is seized in place. I should have it done in a day or two ( I hope) and will be ready to ride. Very keen for a trip out of town - Cederberg !

Have you ever got anything out of Kim in Muizenberg ??! ha ha ha

Cederberg sounds great, just have to fix my starting hassels(3aj's),THinking of adding a Kick start,Know if it is possible?

Hi Paramed,
Don't have a XT but a whole shop full of KLR650 and DR650.
Very keen to go riding as well.

I know some nice roads and overnight places - my job. Can help with organizing weekends out and so.

Also a nice 2001 DR650SE for sale: 30000 km R 32500

You can phone me on 072 259 0009

WINGNUT XT 12 Oct 2006 19:10

Where are you based as Wingnut and I would dig to make a swing to see your whole setup!!
The club thing is getting there and it will not specifically be Yamaha driven,so all enduro\dual sport riders welcome....!:thumbup1: Will keep the 650 in mind, can short'ish chicks(Wife feeling left out!) handle it or is it a little potent?

Will attempt to get hold of you this weekend, but if not I am available on 083-290-7788!!

Le Cap

I have very recently moved to new premises. My new shop is in Edgemead. Give me a buzz on 072 2590009 if you want to come past as the shop does not have official opening times and I'm not there all day long. Otherwise you can call at my place in Goodwood wich comes with the advantage of a well stocked fridge :-)

The DR is a fine bike for wifes and GF's esp. the shorter ones (like 1.70m tall) as the bike can be set low without sacrificing suspension quality and it's light by nature. It's not a classic beginners bike (=does not get boring after three weeks). I still enjoy them after 23 years and who knows how many km.

I think the DR650SE is a very good beginners bike due to its very low weight and forgiving characteristics. (easy to handle, hard to break)

As for tours we better run our own trips as the Le Cap tours are geared towards overseas visitors. I can better that for private trips looking at accommodation, routes and things to do en route.

Moto Zulu 7 Nov 2006 18:59

I am back

Hi Guys,

I am back in RSA. The bikes are on their way, and should arrive Durban end of December.

But I will not find the time to finish some bikes this year. To much going on. 20-25.11. Lesotho Tour, 29.11-02.12 Roof of Africa, 09.12-15.12 Namib Desert Run. So no time left to build up Teneres.

Hi again Cape Town folks,

Arriving in Cape Town on Nov. 17th. 2 weeks in the cape region+garden route by car. Then up to Walvis Bay to unload container and travel by xt for 3 weeks in northern Namibia, Zambia,Botswana.

Any chance I could buy a beer or two on arrival in exchange for route information and a bit of (always valuable) local knowledge?

xt club

Hi guys
another capie here who has an XT6000e .
Right now, I have to admit i DONT enjoy riding it. :( but that is another story.

i do have to be honest, i am not a "club" kind of person, but do like informal and spontaneous rides ever so often (in smaller groups).

I am also a lot of the time on the wilddog forum (as macduff :euro:) which also has its fair amount of "kakpraat", but also rather interesting topics which i enjoy.

anyway, I just thought i would pop in and say hello, and am following this thread closely - it sounds good :thumbup1:

cheers,

You are more than welcome to join, and if you are having any problems with you bike we will try and help you where ever we can. The boys,(and girl) are planning a overnight trip to Sutherland on 20th of Jan along the back roads, let us know of you are keen, you are obviosly wecome.

Check some of the previose threads for my contact details!

Hope to catch up soon,

See the Community page - link on left - to start one in your area. Use the Community Mailing list to organise rides etc.

Hmmm, perhaps we need a Community Forum?

have fun! By the way - we're working on an HU Travellers Meeting near Pretoria for 07! :D

Good to hear guys talking bikes, I an also from C/T. I am currently rebuildinga 3aj Tenere, it is my first XT.

Has anyone got the number of that guy in Kraaifontuin who deals with xts? My cell is 083 650 2339.

PS. Kim told me he was thinking of selling and moving to Aus. any keen business okes out there who can make it work for them should give him a call.

capie 8 Jan 2007 07:12

Hi Thomas
am looking for a side cover (panel) for an 82 model XT200.
the left side which goes over the exhaust, on which the plastics fit.

do you have that?

Ernie

Moto Zulu 8 Jan 2007 11:10

Hi Ernie,

no sorry I only have spares for:

YAMAHA XT600, XTZ 660 and some parts for the XTZ 750

For the MZ 660 I am also well stocked.

Thomas

pgouvias 8 Jan 2007 11:14

Hi Thomas

Thanx for the spares mate, but i have already sourced spares from Germany. I had heard nothing from Kim for an age so went ahead and ordered parts via a friend. It worked out for both gears and shaft to aprox. R2000-00. I am grateful for the effort never the less.

I am still looking for a few odds and bobs for my 3aj, front brake disk, side covers, clutch lever (with switch). If you know of panniers or have any advice on sourceingthat kind of stuff that would be cool.

Peter

Moto Zulu 8 Jan 2007 19:13

Hi Peter,

Clutch lever you get easy as pirate part. Clutch Switch I have to search for. Brake Disc should be also no problem as pirate part.

Side covers! May a friend can copy you some out of fiberglas, what colour do you need?

I stock also new parts for the 3AJ:
Airfilter, speedo and rev.Counter cable, Polysport fork boots, brake pads, mainfolds, clutch levers as well, discs no stock at the moment.

Cape Town here I come!

Hi Wingnut and others,
Just wondering if you got your XT club together and if I can be a temporary member for a couple of weeks?
I am riding from London to SA and will be arriving in Cape Town in about a week - hurrah!
Although I am on a TTR250 on this trip, I am a proud owner of two XTs back home - an XT500 and a 225. And the TTR is a pretty close relation...
So if you're planning any rides around the end of Jan/beginning of Feb, it would be great come along before I send my bike back to the UK.
You can drop me a line via my website (address below).
Cheers,
Lois
