Happy Birthday Vando!

I did think the front fender might not be a good colour match for your bike as I took one out of the shop and held it next to my bike and it was not a good match.

$60 for the jet kit seems reasonable, here the dynojet kit costs £75 + shipping and I don't think you get so many parts to play around with.

bacardi23 29 Jul 2010 14:09

Thanks guys!

bobby: If I decide to sell one of them I'll let you know ;)

03XT600E: I know what happened with that front fender you looked at..
Only the 2006 YZ125 and 250 -> until now have the deep purpulish blue one.
here is a link for the front fender I bought if you're still searching:

YAMAHA YZ 125 250 06-09 FRONT FENDER MUDGUARD UFO BLUE - eBay (item 260391468075 end time Aug-03-10 03:35:20 PDT)

Yer, the jet kit is really good! if the other guy had it on on his raptor I wouldn't be having this problem with the fuel screw... it doesn't have that knobble as the ones in the jet kit I bought...

I'll try to post some pictures today of the parts I got here...

bobthebiker 29 Jul 2010 20:18

Thanks man.

those things are going to make your bike VERY good looking. I know mine makes some noise, but its not terrible, although it could be quieter. but I'm growing to love making a bike my own. its WAY Too fun.

03XT600E 30 Jul 2010 09:04

Thanks for the info on the fender. Good price too.

Did you get the Yamaha grips? I could not see them in your pictures.

I went for the blue flame grips in the end and Acerbis hand guards and am pleased with them.

bacardi23 30 Jul 2010 17:24

No problem! ;)
That's actually the same fender from the same seller I bought mine from..

Yer I got them, they're right here by the side of the computer with my Trailtech dashboard and that survival Flint I also bought..

I'm really worried I can't get that fuel screw out of the carb :(

If I can't it will be alot of money down the drain :\

Hope's up!
Vando

03XT600E 30 Jul 2010 19:48

I have ordered that fender :thumbup1:

I wish I could suggest something for you to get that screw out the carb but I am sure your technical knowledge is greater than mine.

Actually I have not even looked at my carb yet, I will in Autumn when I attempt to fit the Dynojet kit.

I had a couple of bolts sheer off on the XT when I first got it (1 was the frame drain plug) and bought a broken bolt/damaged screw extractor set.

Did not have a huge amount of success with them and ended up drilling through the bolt with a tiny drill and working my way up until just the thread was left and managed to get it out that way.

P.S, those flints are great firestarters, reminds me of the Ray Mears series, not sure if you get that in your part of the world.

03XT600E 5 Aug 2010 14:26

Did you fit any of those parts to your bike yet Vando, or are you still recovering from your Birthday? :oops2:

I fitted the fender, the 4 metal washers from the original fit stright into it but it is a bit tight for the headlight cables that are routed on top.

It also needs some length cut off as it hits the headers.

bacardi23 15 Aug 2010 13:09

Hey!

Nope, I haven't build the bike back up again yet..
had a few major stepbacks on some other issues non bike related so I've yet to get my mojo back on and put the bike back together...

I did however already fit the front fork fast bleed screws on the forks..they look good xD

so, does or doesn't the color match the XT's original??!?! ;)

A few more things I've done is I've removed part of the interior of the WR450 exhaust but kept the end baffle as I don't want more noise than it should have, managed to get the fuel screw out of the carb and got the broken screw from the front fork lower leg that holds(tightens) the front wheel axle on to the forks...

Well.. The front fender looks good! if you have to trim them a bit than do it! ;)

Oh, one thing, my cats threw my WR450 exhaust on the floor those m:censored:r f:censored:ers and it now has some scratches on it so now I won't swap the front of the exhaust with the rear :\

Vando :thumbup1:

03XT600E 15 Aug 2010 19:55

I'm pleased you managed to get that fuel screw out at last.

Yes well done the colour match with the fender is good :)

bacardi23 17 Aug 2010 19:59

So I'm starting to put the bike back up together..

I've only put the frame on the engine (yes engine is on a ''bench'' I made lol) the swingarm and the rear shock(periodically)...

But I'm kinda of suspicious that something isn't quite right..
one of the shock's lower Y piece isn't simetrical..it's offset to one of the sides...

Does anyone know the exact position?

Also, I've noticed the swingarm has a little side play when it's not with the rear shock fitted!

Is this normal?

I'm downloading the workshop manual.. hope there is some info on these issues in it!

Vando jeiger

oothef 17 Aug 2010 20:36

May be a good idea to take the play out of the swinging arm with shims either side, you'll never get a better opportunity.

bacardi23 17 Aug 2010 23:58

Hi!
well, I'm missing a shim! lol

Have a look at this parts diagram:

http://webservices.motorsportdealers...S/REAR_ARM.Gif
I the missing shim is the one with the part number 49...
Can anyone tell me the Inside and outside diameter of the shim and the thickness?

Either that or I'll have to order it from Yamaha :\

oothef how exactly should I do that?

Can you tell me how many shims or thickness needed on both sides to take the play out?

Thanks!
Vando jeiger

Jens Eskildsen 18 Aug 2010 09:18

Depends on how much play there is

Of ya go to the hardware store.

oothef 18 Aug 2010 09:58

The last time I did it was on a twin shock bike which was incredibly simple compared to the assembly you have there! Build up the swinging arm but don't tighten anything then use feeler gauges to check the clearance between swinger and frame, also check clearance around shock linkages.
I used to shim them so they just fell smoothly under their own weight, but as I say, much simpler int' olden days......
If you do spend time attending to fine detail the bike will handle better and be more durable as everything is held in position so wear is minimised, less unwanted movement, less opportunity for ingress of dirt.
I've always been in engineering so found shims or made them from shim steel, if you know no one, Yamaha may be the only option, then you are dependant on mass production clearances, which is good enough (just not usually as good as it can be....)
If the Y isn't symmetrical, is the top shock mount offset to one side?

bacardi23 18 Aug 2010 17:18

hey there! well.. I ended up just fitting a shim between one of the 5's and 6's and it all lines up good and has no play left jeiger

So now, I'm at the point where I have the frame on the engine and the swingarm + rear shock also fitted...

Now I don't know if I'll wait for the two pieces of the front of the frame that secure the engine to the frame to be painted 0R if I fit the pieces full of dirt and rust so I can put the wheels on her...

I still can't start on building the air filter holder or airbox to secure the air filter, TCI, battery and all those little electrics...

One thing, My Trailtech Vapor stealth computer has arrived beerbeerALELUIA!
The computer and the indicator dashboard looks sweeeeeeeeeeet

Oh, still have the reassemble the carburetor with the new jets and stuff...
I'll maybe do this today still...

Vando :cool4:

bacardi23 20 Aug 2010 16:17

So I've already managed to make the routing of the carb to airfilter/airbox air ducts...

It's kinda rough as it's only the "sketch" but it should work if I can't find someone to make me the routing with aluminum pipe...

I'll take a picture and I'll post it here!

I haven't done much on the bike because now it's the biggest music festival here in the Azores and there are some pretty better to Do :innocent:

Once I take now all the measurements I'm having these fabed in either thin aluminum pipe or radiator hose with the right bends!

Vando jeiger

bacardi23 26 Aug 2010 03:54

So I've just finished fabricating a prototype for my rear shock raiser..

Tomorrow morning I'm going the take the bike to a welder so he can make something much stronger and sturdier as the prototype I built was made with some very weak materials and a lot of imagination lol

I'm gonna take some pictures before I disassemble everything AGAIN :\ so I can take it to the welder...

OR

Make a 2D drawing and give it to him so he can fabricate it accordingly...(which can take some time for me to draw it nicely in SolidWorks with all the measurements!
One thing is for sure... Now, the seat height is spot on and everything clears the carburetor-to-airfilter air ducts! jeiger

Next things to do are:

1) sending the design (2D drawings) of the air ducts to a car specialty shop so they can make me the air ducts in radiator type rubber tube..

2) Adapt the WR450 Exhaust to my likings

3) fit the new pro-built shock raiser

4) Make the necessary brackets/holders for the airfilter, battery, TCI, electrics, etc...

5) Fabricate the Trailtech Vapor computer mount

6) Increase the side stand height a couple of inches

7) Take everything that hasn't been painted or needs to be retouched to a painter!

8) Reassemble the whole bike

9) Tune the carburetor

10) take the bike to take the anual vehicle inspection (forgot the right name for it doh) it's necessary to do this in order to make the Insurance

11) make the insurance!

12) Take a lot of pictures

13) Ride like hell xD

Vando jeiger

bacardi23 31 Aug 2010 02:44

Few updates...

- repositioned the air filter! (much better now!!tomorrow will glue the PVC pipes nicely) :biggrin3:
- made the new rear shock mount myself.. just need to make some good spacers and it's done! maybe have it welded... The triangle-shaped shock raiser should become a bit stronger welded... :thumbup1:
- fitted the Trailtech Vapor computer + dashboard (the front disc rotor already had a magnet bolt from Trailtech fitted to lol but I replaced it anyway because it the magnet was kinda loose) but still haven't been able to take out one more rotor screw so I can fit another magnet-screw..
- I cut a couple of inches off the WR450 connecting pipe so I could see how I want it fitted! looks great but still need someone to fabricate the connection so it can fit to the KEDO downpipes and still use the subframe mount point..

Things are getting some shape now jeiger

It's coming on well Vando. Nice front fender :)

Can you tell me why you are going to all that trouble repositioning the air filter and making up all those pipes?

I would like to see how the Trailtech Vapor computer + dashboard looks so if you get a chance post some pictures.

By the way I have Devil headers from Kedo and a less restrictive tailpipe and bought some fstainless steel flexi pipe off ebay to join up. I used fire putty and a jubilee clip and it's stayed put for a few months.

But I expect you have access to welding gear and better equipment to make a better job.

bacardi23 13 Sep 2010 16:27

hey there!

Thanks!

All that trouble with the new airfilter is because I now got the raptor660 carb and because of it I had to push the rear shock about 1 1-1/2" back to be able to fit the carburetor..

Yeah, I also got the Kedo Devil downpipes but with a WR450 muffler :P
I did see in a local mechanic garage one of those flexi tubes for the exhaust but I'll only resort to that if I can't have it welded to give the frame a little more rigidity...

Here are the pictures you asked for:

http://img844.imageshack.us/img844/9...c02965p.th.jpg This is how it is right now

http://img833.imageshack.us/img833/6...c02967f.th.jpg This is how I wanted it to become!

Do notice that I don't have the standard headlight mounting bracket...
It's just one I fabricated...

BTW, do you know what the front headlight beam height should be so I don't blind the incoming drivers?

Vando beer

03XT600E 13 Sep 2010 22:04

The Trailtech Vapor looks really classy:thumbup1:

As for the light I don't know as I suspect each country has different rules regarding beam height.
You could probably look this up on the internet.
Here there are sites outlining what the testers look for.

MOT UK car and vehicle MOT information equipment car servicing parts and spares - headlamp aim

When I took my bike for its M.O.T I had an advisory because the light flicked upto the right dazzling oncoming traffic.
The tester covered a patch of the headlight to stop this happening.
Even though it had previously had 3 M.O.T's by the previous owner this problem had never been picked up before.

It turns out my bike is a grey import from France so I have to decide whether to keep the tape on the perfectly good headlight or pay £300 for a new UK one.
All the ones on Ebay are for different modles or not for the UK.

bacardi23 14 Sep 2010 22:26

So..

After searching for some need-to-do things on the bike so it can pass the MOT I found out that my WR front brake master cylinder does not have an option to put the front brake light switch...

A little research here and there and I found the solution...

WR/YZ Baja kits!

They got an oil pressure sensor that is used for this purpose..
A Baja kit..is around 160USD without shipping...

A little more googling and I found the oil pressure switch!

http://www.wheelingcyclesupply.com/i...AAAV-11442.jpg
I'm going for the Banjo option as It will look much better as the cable goes directly to the side whilst the bolt type the cables stick outwards to the front!

Here is an example of the bolt-type in a WR front brake master cylinder I found on fleabay:

http://i.ebayimg.com/10/%21B0Dj55QCW...w%7E%7E_12.JPG

The most impressive thing I found in that fleabay auction is that it's the whole brake system and it has that Oil pressure switch and the Trailtech Vapor computer speed sensor..look:

http://i.ebayimg.com/05/%21B0Dj7fQEW...g%7E%7E_12.JPG

110USD + shipping not bad...

bacardi23 14 Sep 2010 22:27

Well.. you can always fit the tape on the inside of the headlight screen... ;)

bacardi23 15 Sep 2010 22:32

airbox is 65% complete...

need to:

1) make some fitting holes for the screws
2) fiber a few nylon nuts with some large size but not too thick (if possible) shims
3) reinforce a part I needed to cut a bit off
4) fiber some fins to inside to separate and secure the battery + electrics from the air filter... (chambers lol)
5) paint the air box
6)glue some old "tire air chamber" on the lower side of the airbox.

Pretty sure its M6, i've used some for mine which you can tighten with you're fingers (fingerscrews?) Works nicelym and very helpfull at times. Need to do the same for the airboxcover, and the same for the mesh thats placed instead of the snorkel. :)

Wow.. that bike is coming along nicely… must be the most heavily modded XT on the planet..:thumbup1:

How is riding on Santa Maria? I took a look in google earth… man that island is tiny.. :eek3:

bacardi23 17 Sep 2010 03:27

Hehe.. yeah it's a small island a whole lot of 98 square kilometers of paradise! :D
Here there are a lot of dirt roads and some few major streets, no highways or speedways in my island but I did still get 160km/h a few years back when I weighted about 20 kilos less (which I'm taking care of).

And yes, a motorcycle is the best means of transportation here.. in my opinion of course! lol

It's one of the best places to spend a whole summer if you want some piece and quiet and a few music festivals from once in a while :thumbup1:

For me I love the fact that in less than an hour I can prep my boat, go to a fuel station and fill it with gas and go spearfishing, big game fishing, wakeboarding, go to some remote hidden beaches where you can take some girls, beer, vodka and a few cooking ingredients and eat some freshly caught 15min ago fish or even have a barbecue is simply amazing jeiger

And take ones waste back home and dispose of it of course!

The airbox is still in need of a few adjustments internally so I can secure the battery, TCI, flash relay and fuse box (I think I'm missing one thing here...)

As you can see in the pictures, there are two gaps on the sides of the airbox beneath the seat which I still have to fiber it so it has a nice seal..

Will need to make two holes on the under part of the airbox to be able to screw and unscrew the seatpost bolts....

Besides that fabricate the midpipe to connect to the Devil downpipes, paint a few things(airbox, footpegs and hangers, license plate holder/hanger, engine skidplate and that metal piece that connects the skidplate to the frame and engine mounts), fit the electrics, tune the carb and I'm done...

25 USD shipped to my house.. now just have to wait ;)

Vando jeiger

kito 18 Sep 2010 17:03

i see you have raised the hight of the rear to match up to the new forks .has this caused any problems with the chain wearing the plastic guide out on the swing arm ? how did you decide to higher the back ? im in the same position now with a stripped down frame.i have new WP usd forks that are 50mm longer than the old ones and i now need to get a new rear shock.anyone know the strongest at a ok price ?

bacardi23 18 Sep 2010 20:48

Kept the stock rear shock.

made a bracket with a triangle shape which moved the top mount of the rear shock 2.5cm back and 1cm lower.

You can get a special made rear shock for your needs while keeping it mounted in the same position!
look here: Custom TFX M1 Shocks for Yamaha: eBay Motors (item 150432186369 end time Oct-06-10 12:45:25 PDT)

they can costumise the rear shock to your likings...
If I had the money for it I'd get one for sure!

I was able to make the triangle shaped mount because I had this welded:
http://img716.imageshack.us/img716/6...c02933y.th.jpg

As for the chain damaging anything?
Check my 2nd picture on the top of this page.
That picture was taken with the bike on it's stand and with the chain very loose.

in the upright position with the chain in the proper tension you won't have anymore problems with chain damage as you already had before unless you put smaller front and back sprockets.

03XT600E 19 Sep 2010 08:57

Hey Vando, did you need to modify the front fender to avoid it hitting the devil headers?

Regarding mud flaps you can get retro ones for the front and rear, you could use one for behind the shock.

kito 19 Sep 2010 11:26

just had a look at that link to the shock.it all sounds good .anybody know of any in longterm use ? how are they holding up ? a wilbers could also custom a shock for about the same money.which is best ? it has to be tough

bacardi23 21 Sep 2010 00:19

I got no clue how they hold up but as for the construction they seem very solid!

TFX was previously called Tecnoflex...

So...tomorrow I'll be soldering the Medium headlight cable for my trailtech indicator dashboard on to the headlight wiring and be lengthening the cables to and from the TCI..

Hope everything goes as planned!

Just a few more days and hopefully the bike is ready!

For anyone interested, I've found both front and rear WAVED disc brake discs / rotors very less than 110USD delivered!

bacardi23 29 Sep 2010 03:11

Updates

So, I've been doing some little but very important things on the bike these last 10days..

Mostly, I've been working on all the electrics which I absolutely needs to be perfectly done, that's why I've taken all this time as most of the new wiring cables had to be shipped from another island (yeah I know not fun to wait that much 3-4 days between each shipment!) and on weekends, after midday saturdays every car shops that sell those things are closed!

What I've done is:
  • I've relocated all the electrics on to the airbox I made in fiberglass.
  • made all the necessary changes on to the Trailtech Indicator dashboard wiring so it now fits using the XT's stock indicator lights connector.
  • repaired the broken cables.
  • modified the wiring harness behind the headlight cover so I could fit everything nice and clean!
  • Made and fitted the new battery cables (had to wait 4 days to get 95cm + 91cm of 16sq mm battery cable and another 2 days for the right terminals as they ordered the WRONG ones! m.f :censored: rs...
  • Fitted the new banjo type Oil pressure brake light switch which arrived today.
So, tomorrow I'm gonna get ONE female bullet connector... Not cool!
Yeah, couldn't finish everything today cause I was missing ONE connector to replace the broken front right turn signal cable and connector...

That's what I'll be doing tomorrow...plus, I'll clean the raptor carbs very nicely and fit the jet kit.. wish me luck on that!

Right now, The bike only needs a battery, engine oil and tune the carbs....
Hope to be riding this weekend!

Vando :D

bacardi23 29 Sep 2010 03:13

Oh, and the exhaust midpipe!
Forgot about that one...

Should I use some heatproof liquid gasket between the muffler and downpipes or something else?

Vando beer

Jens Eskildsen 29 Sep 2010 09:14

You can get some special exhaust paste, made to make sure theres no leak around the joint of sections. Use that, it the exhaust draw in just a little air at a joint, you'll get an exhasut sounding like a handgrenade went of, from time to time.

It hardens as it warms up, making a tight seal. You can still disassembly the parts, just need to clean of the hardened paste, and apply some new.

Doesnt cost much, and any halfdesent carshop should have some.

bacardi23 30 Sep 2010 19:08

Thanks Jens! :)

I'm gonna have the exhaust and the rear brake done tomorrow hopefully!

btw, here is a picture of how the wiring now is on my bike... (the part that goes to the back lol)

Vando
it looks like you bike is coming along nice. im still waiting to get my frame back from the powder coaters. could you please tell me were you found them wavey discs ? any chance of a photo ? what do you think of the quality ? also i was just looking at your wiring. is that been rewired with heavyer guage cable ? thanks david

bacardi23 6 Oct 2010 03:46

Hey there!
just came here for a peak before heading off to bed...

The ebay seller doesn't know if the disc he is selling fits the year bike model that I asked him so I'm not sure it'll fit perfectly on the XT..

one seller that has an online webpage is S3performance.
Their discs seem to be pretty good too...

I'll post you some links tomorrow here! ;)

yer, the wiring... couldn't get some decent enough wires on this freaking island...

I think the problem I'm having with the bike not starting is comming from having put these heavier wires instead of the 2mm square that it should be...

That and the fact I still haven't been able to put the floats of the raptor carbs at the right level (it's overflowing gas out of the overflow :censored:..

it's a pain to adjust this.. put carb in, measure the fuel height using a clear tube fitted on to the overflow(under the carbs)...too high---take them out and adjust a bit, put them back on, recheck the height, still too high, take them off, adjust again....

i've done it about 10 times now and I'm getting bored! couldn't even touch the bike today, that's how bored I got yesteday

Jens Eskildsen 6 Oct 2010 09:20

Bigger/better wires wont mess anything up.

bacardi23 7 Oct 2010 16:44

YUPYYYYYYYYYYYY just managed to finally set the carb float heights where it doesn't overflow out of the carbs!

Mothere fraking sobs! lol

Well, I think I've figured out why I got no spark...
The coil cable where it attaches to the sparkplug cap boot is in need of a repair or even a new coil...

Still, I'm gonna need to recheck all the back part of the wiring connections to see if everything is in order!

Hopefully I'll be able to have the coil cable checked by my mechanic later this afternoon....

Vando :thumbup1:

bacardi23 9 Oct 2010 04:34

Hi Jens!

Yeah, I guess they don't but..they do make the whole diameter of all the wires going to the back of the bike about 50% larger...

Plus, I do have some wiring fitted in the wrong places.. (don't ask me how lol)
One of the cables, the black one, that goes from the e-start button to the starter solenoid is going not to the starter solenoid but to the 4cable relay instead :oops2:

I'll be fixing that tomorrow and hopefully the bike will come to life again!

Vando :biggrin3:

bacardi23 10 Oct 2010 20:44

Correction...

Every connection was correctly made!
but one of the cables that I've increased was loose.. I must've pulled the cable and the connectors got separated...

Updates..

The bike is now running but still have to tune the carbs as I don't know if it's rich or lean.

but! might I add that... the WR450 exhaust sounds realllllly nice and is not much louder than stock!! :D

oh, and the stebel horn god damn........it is LOUD! lol
I've only tried the high tone one.. I got the low tone in its box in my bedroom which I'll try later tonight.

I need to get a new battery!

bacardi23 13 Oct 2010 21:03

just have to wait a week or two for it to arrive.

bacardi23 15 Oct 2010 16:51

So, last night I fitted my brothers DT125R battery on to the XT and who would've say it works perfectly with the kickstart!

Now to the important stuff..

If you accelerate medium-high and when it's reaching about 4000 RPM she lifts the front wheel up without popping the clutch..
I so love my XT right now

Well, I'm gonna fit the rear brake and master cylinder on her...
Check with you guys later!

Vando beer

bacardi23 17 Oct 2010 16:35

well, I'm still tuning the carb.

It's been taking a bit longer because the weather hasn't been helping around here.

Right now I got 160R and 165L with needle in the 2nd groove.

Don't know exactly how many turns I got on the fuel screws tho as it's kinda hard to actually adjust them even with the aftermarket fuel screws with knob... but I figure it's around 3 turns out on each carb..

It pulls a bit better in third now but is still a bit hesitating...

Vando :cool4:

bacardi23 17 Oct 2010 17:33

2nd groove on the needle is too lean.. I went from 5th groove to 2nd it was too much..

will put it in 3rd and hopefully I'll be able to try later when the rain stops.. if it stops...

bacardi23 20 Oct 2010 02:20

Well, I've reseted the raptor carb back to stock while only keeping the aftermarket needles and guess what?!

IT WORKS!

The thing was too damn rich before...
The sparkplug was black with some black sooth lol..

it pops a bit under deceleration...

very little tuning will be needed now to make it 100% perfect!
So tomorrow I got work to do!

Vando :biggrin3:

bacardi23 1 Nov 2010 00:28

Updates!

The WR450 exhaust is fitted!
looks great!

The trailtech Vapor speed sensor is semi-ready.. just have to drill a small hole and tap it so the sensor can be tightened with a screw instead of a zip-tie! don't ask lol

Temperature sensor is working great!
It fits as a shim on the sparkplug and the average temperature is now around 101ºC (at the head, not the oil!!!)

I am still waiting for the battery to arrive.. hopefully just one more week!

As far as the raptor660 carburetor I got #25 pilots, 140Left - 145Right and Vito's fuel needles in 2nd groove. fuel screws are also Vito's and are 2.5 turns out! (will make it 3 turns out just to check something soon)

Fixed the turn signal flashing at the same time problem with a diode so now the turn signal light indicator on the dashboard also flashes!

Increased the height of the sidestand +4cm which now allows me to kickstart the engine much easily and without the risk of the bike falling over! lol

Still need to make the final details on the fiberglass "airbox".
And will still need to finish painting the rest of the parts such as pillion footpegs and brackets, engine "skidplate", sidestand, ignition coil bracket and the rear shock raiser!

I've also already found a very cheap motorcycle insurance company that has some special protocols for bikes over 7years old (around 50€ mininum per year!)

After that I need to get a new 90-90/21 front tire and the bike will sail through the MOT without any problems! :thumbup1:
(I've already been to the MOT place and asked them to check if the bike would pass the test.. headlight, exhaust, turn signals and rear view mirrors!)
oh, need to repair one of the rear view mirrors.. broke one :\

The bike exhaust is making less -6 dB than stock!

Vando beer

bacardi23 9 Nov 2010 19:45

Got my new battery today!

I'd forgotten how easy it was to just push the e-button... lol

It starts always on the first try and in less than a second!
So far so good!

went for a little tour of about 20km and no more discharged battery!

bacardi23 11 Nov 2010 21:11

I've fitted it and now I have a fully working tach!

About the battery, another +40km since the last ride and the battery is still going strong!

Jens Eskildsen 13 Nov 2010 19:31

Cool, nice to follow youre progress :)

bacardi23 26 Nov 2010 15:42

Well, to sum up...

The bike passed the MOT with a "clean" bill of health but the guy said that I can't use that front tire... 80/100- 21" but he let it slip..
Also, the turn signals need to be 15-25cm away from the front and rear lights here in Portugal!

Just the fact that the front tire isn't the right measures is sufficient to get a FAILED MOT here in Portugal!

He did however say the bike had great brakes! lol

Oh, as for the other little things still needed to complete the bike:
Paint the engine frame guard, kickstand and the footpegs brackets.

Vando :D

bacardi23 18 Jan 2011 08:56

Updates!!

Fitted the TW200 wide steel footpegs and new springs a few weeks ago!
They feel very good while riding!!

Paint the engine frame guard, kickstand and the footpegs brackets still need painting but I'm currently not on the island :rolleyes2: as I'm in Almada (close to Lisbon) getting a course in welding!!

JEEEEEEENNNNNSSSSSS THE PICTUREEEESSSSSSSS OF MY DISC BRAKESSSSSS?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!??!?!

bacardi23 21 Feb 2011 00:46

carb tuning

So, just arrived at my home island and I'll be staying for a couple of weeks and will try to finish the bike...

I've been searching for some more info on sparkplug reading and the most similiar picture I've found was this #4 on this page: Spark Plugs

The sparkplugs I use are the XT's stock ones! the NGK DPR8EA-9!
All get like that after less than 30miles...
(Very similar! just not as many deposits as on that image.)

I've also got two DPR8EIX-9 (iridium in my garage) that I've tried and they also got the same colors...

The thing is, I didn't set the gaps on those sparkplugs!

Now....By reading the description it says my sparkplug is Too Cold!

My problems I believe are: incorrect sparkplug gap and too much fuel and most likely a little bad sync between both carbs!

Today I've adjusted the gap! It was a bit over 1mm... yes, too much!
I've set it to 0.7mm as it says on the NGK website it should be between 0.6 and 0.9mm.
This should solve the gap part!

As for the overrich condition I'll be ordering a few lower mainjets in 2.5 steps which should help fine tune my carb.

Plus, the bike pops a bit on decel and has a small hesitation at constant throttle which I've been dialing in.

There are no air leaks!

Jets are: 145L 150R, #25 pilots, needle clips in 2nd groove from the top. as for the fuel screws I don't remember how many turns in/out...

Carb is a dual BST33mm from a 2002 raptor660.
bike is a 1990 XT600E

Other mods: KEDO (devil) downpipes, WR450 exhaust, K&N RU4710 air filter with pre-filter water repellent sleeve, Custom made fiberglass open airbox.

One other thing, Don't have a rear tire right now lol
So no stop and go sparkplug, throttle position + engine cut-off readings.

One more thing, should I put the same mainjets on both carbs?
I don't really know the engine need for fuel from low-mid-high rpms...
If for mid-high rpms the 2nd carb is fully opened, a slighter higher fuel output sounds "obvious" I guess...

Anyone?

Jens Eskildsen 21 Feb 2011 16:40

Mainjets has nothing to do with everyday riding. So unless you're tests are at WOT, you need to look elsewhere. It could still be rich in the mainjets, but you dont really know before you have tested with a WOT run.

If youre idlejets is 1-2 numbers too big, (rich) it can also effect all other throttlepositions, maing other "curcuits" slightly richer, but not by much.

Backfires and such can easely be a small airleak at the exhaustjoints. All the way from where the headers meet the cylinder, to where the silencer meets the back of the headers. Air goes in, unburnt gasses egnite, and BOOM.

You could also be too small in the idlejet, making low revs/throttelpositions lean.

Regarding picture number 4, you cant really see it its too cold a plug, or a rich condition. If you got the stock plug, thats good. Nothing wrong there.

Good luck.

bacardi23 22 Feb 2011 00:37

Jens... wot is how I ride most of the time! lol

I've ridden the bike with these settings and now after about 300km (total on all sparkplugs) all them look the same. sooty black, black porcelain and the tip of the nose light brown.

I'm using the exhaust gaskets that came with the KEDO downpipes but there is a very small bit of black dust( two 1 sq millimeter area one on each pipe) on where the two downpipes connect to the midpipe.

but the bike is overrich!
at WOT it hesitates!

It used to hesitate alot more when it was even richer but I moved the needle clips from 3rd to 2nd position from the top of the needles and went from 160L 165R mainjets to 145 - 150 and it got much better..much less hesitation on wot.

now I adjusted the sparkplug gap and will be waiting for the new jets to arrive.....

and two weeks for new tires :(

bacardi23 18 Mar 2011 15:28

3 weeks later and got a refund on the jets as they didn't have them as they'd told before and still no new tires! FRACK!

Last night I ordered again the mainjets from another source in the US..
will have to wait for them..

I did however order a new lightswitch/turn signal gizmo (12€shipped) that has a choke lever beneath it so I can properly use the raptor660 choke cable and not just pull it by hand BUT the connections are different.. so now I also gotta wait a few more days for the 9way micro-pin connector housing to arrive from the UK..

Now for the GOOD part!

I've fitted 145 mainjets on both carbs, needle clips on 2nd groove from top, #25 pilots and the bike pulls good, very rarely pops on decel but she still a bit rich and hesitates a bit at constant speed cruising...

Can affirmatively say it's rich because I lowered the needle clips to 3rd groove and it got worse..

Bought a new rear tube to fit on the tire as old one I believe is f-ed up..
Will go to a car shop and fitted today..

Ride safe!

Jens Eskildsen 30 Mar 2011 20:52

Cool :D

bacardi23 31 Mar 2011 00:51

The jets cost 26,18 GBP shipped (29.37€)

Guess I'll have spare jets if I ever want to tune the engine.. cam, springs and valves, Wiseco 11.5 : 1 96mm piston, Wiseco or GYTR or anyother aftermarket stronger and lightweight clutch basket, plate and springs.. (someday hopefully I'll either get a new used XT600E or just the engine or even if I ever need to repair my own engine due to major failure)

At least the left fuel tank side fairing can be totally repaired but the right side one is going to be more difficult as it's missing the front bottom corner right up to the screw hole mounting(the mounting thankfully wasn't broken)

As for the rest of the paint job... we'll see....

=)

Jens Eskildsen 31 Mar 2011 17:02

How about a lighter flywheel? I guess you would gain more than a lighter clutch? Havent even seen lightened clutches, but sounds fancy.

A dude here in Denmark took of 500gram from his xt flywheel. He said he didnt get any big gains, but I guess all small things add up.

Kedo has a 98mm 10:1 wiseco, which they say dont need a new sleeve, jsut bore and hone the factory fitted one. Im FAR from an expert, but that seems like it would give the best bang for the buck. You would end up at around 630ccm :scooter:

bacardi23 5 Apr 2011 19:19

Yer.. Although the XT engine isn't a race engine I bet all those little changes add up!

I got the broken crankcase off last night and toke it to the only machine shop to have it welded...

The guy is gonna weld it tomorrow as he was finishing some other works..
My front brake pads just arrived and I'm gonna fit them right now...

The bike is soooo close to being ready!

The mainjets should arrive this week...
Will be getting the other parts painted hopefully this week AND
Just need to wait for the crankcase cover gasket to arrive and buy a couple of Liters of oil to fill the engine again :\

Vando beer

bacardi23 6 Apr 2011 19:23

Mainjets have finally arrived! hehe

My crankcase cover was said should be ready today so tomorrow morning I'll go get it but still have to wait for the gasket which I doubt will arrive before Monday morning.

Might just fit the case without the gasket so nothing rusts inside before I come back from the Mainland next month..

So so so almost ready!

Vando beer

bacardi23 23 Jun 2011 13:35

Well, Updating this thing...

Recently my engine had both crankcase covers broken.
The LHS is already fixed.
The RHS has a small hole which I'll be fixing today and should be ready tomorrow.

JB Weld 2-compound epoxy glue is awesome!
Every biker should have one of these and the waterweld version as well!

It might even work with those guys that like to actually weld the countershaft sprocket...lol

Anyway..

Only two new update is that I already bought the new tires for the bike:

CONTINENTAL / 90/90-21 54S TT TRAIL ATTACK
CONTINENTAL / 120/90R17 64S TRAIL ATTACK

shipped to mainland Portugal at a total cost of 122.69€
Still will need to ship it her to the Azores..25€ give or take..

That's as much as a Metzeller Tourance sold here in the island which is 120€ + shipping!

And the other one is, The bike starts and idles much easier and steady now with the 132.5 mainjets fitted.. will still need adjusting and maybe one size larger and 4th clip on the needles..

New RHS gasket arriving tomorrow night
will buy more engine oil as apparently alot more than 2 litters of oil were wasted when the crankcases broke..

Does anyone know how to properly filter under 200km brand new oil? i was able to salvage about 1.5litters into a clean container when I went to fix the broken RHS crankcase cover..

You gotta love german DPD shipping... they don't have an office here in Portugal so they got a partner Chronopost International..

I just called them up on Chronopost to see how I could get the tires delivered again to my brother as he wasn't home in the mainland as the german website I bought the tires from wanted 85 or 90€ to have them shipped to the Azores islands..

The lady that picked up the phone was great!
I asked about how I could get the tires delivered and after a little talking she told me they could ship me the tires to any other address that I wished, a friends or whatever.

Told her I was in the Azores and asked how much would it cost to have the tires shipped here. She told me they could and would send by airplane mail at NO EXTRA COST...will take around 5 working days to get them here..

Just made my day, saved quite some cash!
I'm a happy camper right now!

just wished I had the other bits of the bike already painted.. will have to wait for Tuesday or Wednesday..

I'ma do the same thing with the chainkit! ask them to ship with DPD and have chronopost reship it to me for free, oh yeahhhhh :D

bacardi23 6 Jul 2011 03:53

Heya...

I thought of it but didn't make or get one as I don't plan loading it up besides hauling my arse around and surely some ladyfriends. :innocent:

But I did reinforce the frame...
I ordered the welder to weld a tube but he didn't actually weld it where I wanted..

Look at the center of the picture.
Right above the clip/bracket where the the airfilter black intake tubes..

That tube isn't there from factory...
The actual spot I wanted it to be welded was the lower part about three inches higher so it would "match" the tube welded from factory on the other side.

Jens Eskildsen 13 Jul 2011 19:56

Kedo for the bashplate.

Vando, I think the manual calls for threadlock for brakedisc bolts. It seems like a good idea.

bacardi23 13 Jul 2011 21:01

Jens: Yeah... but I bought longer bolts than the stock ones so I could put nylocks nuts instead of the threadlock..

I'm gonna damage on of those countersunk bolts and see if I can weld on it to ensure I can get them out again if I ever need to..

Also, I'm thinking of fitting 3 trailtech vapor speed sensor bolt magnets if I can find the third one.. or I'll just put the two that I have on hand right now..

Let's see, let's see..

Mezo 15 Jul 2011 03:22

Use threadlock mate, use a lesser strength one if you are really worried about removing it in the future, but all threadlock will release with a bit of heat anyhow so i wouldn't worry about it, safer stuck in than falling out.

Crisscross pattern doing it up with 10nm of torque.

bacardi23 11 Nov 2012 23:43

Hey guys!
Been away from the forum for a few weeks.. sorry..

Well, I haven't been riding the bike for a while now.. to darn cold outside lol

Tadas: the triple clamps are aftermarket racing quality specifically made for the Yamaha YZ/WR 125-450 up untill 2004 (for this version).. after this they changed increased the diameter of the forks.

I'll try to take some pictures in a bit but what I did was weld two bits of square-shaped solid "pipe" which I bent and grinded so it would hit the steering stoppers on the lower triple clamp.

Mezo: I can't remember the bike ever being as good as it is now in terms of power.. about 4 weeks ago when I last drove her, I accidentally whellied in 2nd gear and I'm 117kg...

Keep in mind it has to do with the Kedo Devil downpipes which are +4mm bore than stock, the opened up WR450 exhaust pipe and the K&N RU-4710 airfilter with Outwear and open "airbox"...

I would never change it back to what it was before! ;)

Mezo.. They are just too big for the XT's stock engine...

Maybe a full race engine makeover could work with one of those Keihin.. 101mm high compression piston, reinforced crankshaft, high quality bearings, double forged conrod, larger and titanium valves retainers, springs and seals, lighter flywheel, reinforced clutch basket, racing clutch plate kit and springs, stage3 cam, complete performance exhaust (downpipes and silencer), front and rear suspension, reinforcing the frame.....

The XT wasn't built as a racing bike...not even for supermoto...
It would be way overpriced to do all these upgrades + work and the bike is just too heavy... One would do much better with a CR450F or KTM525SM or even a Honda CR500AF (CR500 engine in a CR450F frame!) ;)

Vando :)
