High Atlas with Himalayans
I was thinking of buying one so we rented a couple of 450s for a week in the High Atlas, covering nearly 3000km.
It didn’t help that they were WYSIWYG rentals with <2mm left in stock tyres, but while we found some great new routes up in the mountains, neither of us ended up converts. The 450 is an improvement over the old 411 (which I owned) in just about all ways, and even did 96mpg at one point. But if you're getting on a bit and still like exploring new trails in remote places, they’re just too heavy for what they are. Fab read Chris I’m sure I echo many in saying your website books n thoughts are invaluable bier
I’d always been a bit curious about them after having a 411 which unfortunately had issues I’m sure many of us just wanted the 411 mk2 with the long stroke engine. I think the more options at this end of the market the better as we all have different needs and wants from our adventuresI’m on a Honda nx500 myself at the moment surprising bit of kit, Thanks for sharing. |
Nice videos - I must say you looked liked you gelled really well with the bikes especially on that steep downhill.
When considering the Him 450 I think it’s important to remember what they are - an upgrade from the 411. The 411 was a bike designed for a new type of rider in India: the young, professional classes whose holidays were riding REs in the Himalayas. Being REs, of course, they also had to be robust enough to carry 2 adults and a couple of kids, ride rough terrain and be fixed by the roadside - including welding which is an important factor when considering weight. The fact that the bikes proved extremely popular with ‘western’ riders was a bit of a surprise to RE and a massive bonus (understatement of the year ????). With the continued modernisation of India and their road structure the Himmie needed an upgrade but it’s core market remains the same and I think the 450 has the same ingredients as the old 411. What it isn’t is a trail/duel sport bike designed for guys like me to thrash around the Peak District. And, possibly not a good renter - my wife rode a 411 from Canada to Patagonia and we came across a rental company in Argentina who said the Himmies were wrecked at 20K miles, well she sold hers at 25K miles and it was perfect. I think MAD TV hit the nail on the head when they said the 450 is the best RTW bike - what it’s good at is the long haul. Keep up the good work bier |
