Shipping from South America to USA, whats the cheapest way for a poor student?

My name is Alex, I'm currently on a trip with my KLR 650 from the USA to South America.

I am planning on shipping myself and the bike back to the states by air once I reach Ushuia around April.

Does anyone know where is the best and cheapest place to air ship from in south america? Argentina?Chile?Brazil?

And if anyone has any suggestions for companies in south america that are good for this?

Thanks!

Way back

Alex,

the cheapest way is probably the usual. Dump your bike and travel by bus. As soon as you take the bike with you, it becomes dearer and worthwhile considering the value of it. Very simple.

We are all poor people, compared to Bill Gates.

Cheers

Helgo

I can definitely say not Brazil! Chile or Argentina shouldn't be too bad although you may do better from Bolivia for instance. Have you checked the shipping database for other travellers experiences?

And finally it could be cheaper to ship the bike by sea to the US. USA port charges aren't too bad. BUT -take any quote you get and double it to get some semblance of final price. Air shipments are much more accurate pricing than sea.

Best of luck, and whatever you do, please be sure to add it to the shipping database to help other travellers!

thanks Grant, yes I have check other reports and they've said Brazil is good, which is probably my end point. Did you have a personal experience with Brazil or just word of mouth of issues?

shipping from

from Ecuador , peru, Colombia is pretty cheap by boat ($700 ask Gaston )
if you ship to Miami you can store it for few month in House (40 miles north of Miami)

I have the same problem. I will have to ship from Ecuador to California.

Please post to this thread, if you have found a cheap solution to ship to the states.

Alex,

I am looking into this as well. Ideally trying to Ship from Buenos Aires or Brazil to Miami (but have also heard from Brazilians that shipping is a pain from there as well).

If I find something I'll let you know and maybe we could ship together if you are interested?

I could be open to Houston if that is cheaper too.

Hasta amigo!

Beto

The cheapest air way from South America to US, Miami is from Barranquilla via Tampa Air Cargo.
I had to shipments and this is the way to go. On top of that I 'll be assisting you in Miami. It is pretty fast to clear at the airport.
As for Barranquilla , I have the agent, crater. You should be there at least a week before the shipment. Some paperwork, Dian and Police anti-narcotics inspection needs to be done.

Contact me anytime.

Hey Gatson...just saw this thread... I'll be looking to ship my KLR from Colombia to Miami (or Houston) in around 6 weeks. Do you know what the approximate final cost for the flight, crating, etc would be?

Thanks!
