Kevin,

I agree with you, I thinkI wouldhavemade it withoutthe carnet as well, butwas toolazyto try as minewasworking so well. I will try from here, but to be frank, Ithink youcan get intoany african country even with a pice of card board strapped to your car instead of a licence plate. It gets easier the further you get away from Senegal.

Karelle, Nigeria visa in Accrta, took about 3 hours, no problems at all. Travelling in Nigeria was an absolute joy, except no beers available in the north. No problems, not asked for a briobe once and never paid one, in spit e of crossing probably 50 or 60 road blocks. Sorry, no idea about GPS co-ords, I am without it, I am a bit of a purist in this regard, I like the old map and compass way.

Luke, I am souhth african, but with me were 2 dutch, and one german, plus about a week later a truck load full of canadians, british, all sorts. All the same story, in and out same day.

Bye,

Heye

Luke

More than one person has thought that of varying countries, and found out to their cost that that's not so. All it takes is a fax to Switzerland and you're done.
I remember well asking the guys in Egyptian Customs why all the vehicles parked in this huge lot - covered in layers of dust. They said they were illegally imported; bad Carnets, failed to pay duties, documents illegal or incorrect etc. They would all be sold at auction eventually.

You do what you think you need to do, but remember we do NOT recommend trying to scam the border guys - it's a bad idea and you will get found out eventually. And Iranian and lots of other jails suck!

By the way you don't necessarily need to make a deposit - most countries you can go the insurance route for a Carnet.

just been looking into this whole carnet de passage thing and balking at the security costs involved. i'm planning on travelling on my bike through europe to south east asia (and any countries inbetween)... is the carnet de passage a necessity, or can it be avoided?

whats the deal with 'fake' carnets? how much are they going for?

any info would be great...

I've also been looking into it. It seems the big cost is going to Iran or Egypt where the rate is 500% of the bike value. For most others, India for example, it's 150%.

If your bike is worth £2,000, the insurance is 10% so for India and the like that's £300 and you get £150 back. The Carnet itself is £170 or something. I believe there is a fee if you go down the insurance route as well.

For Iran, the insurance would be £1,000 and you get £500 back.

Of course if you take a nice BMW at 10k value you would loose £2,500 on the £5,000 insurance. Ouch!

Thanks,

Help please, I need mr carnet!

Hallo I'm new here, and this is an old post...I know...
I will travel till Australia from Spaim, starting at the end of july. I can not pay the ammount to the bank to get the carnet.
I investigate and in Italy (i'm italian living in Spain) they ask me 3 times the value of my vehicole (5.000€x3=15.000) in Spain they ask a 3.200€ deposit for the same vehicole, but the employ that was helping me was fired because they close the office in Palma de Mallorca one month ago, so I'm waiting an answer from RACE but it takes long time.
Did you get in contact with him? Can you help me to contact him?
Thanks

I and a friend of mine bought 2 indian Royal Enfields registers of our names here in india. Our plan for the next weeks is to drive then throught pakistan, iran and turkey and than to italy. Is there any chanche to do this trip without carnet? Because in india they charge you 3000€ deposit wich you lose... And in europe nowbody wants to do a carnet de passage on a indian bike. Can sombody gibe me any advises for this prblem? Or maybee do a fake carnet?

Firstly, have a really good trip.

Don’t go down the fake carnet route - nowadays the world is connected and all it takes is one person to check the carnet is real and that is both bikes gone and you probably in prison.

As I understand the situation the carnet deposit should be repayable if you return the bike to India, scrap the bike or pay the import fees on the bike at your destination (don’t forget you may not be able to import the vehicle permanently as it may not meet European standards - Noraly from Itchy Boots couldn’t keep her Himalayan on he road in Netherlands because of this).

Alternatively you can pay the import duty at each border and then claim it back when you leave.

This has been MUCH discussed and attempted in the past, and to my knowledge there are still the same impediments:

MUST READ before you continue with the idea of buying an Enfield in India and riding it home:

https://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hu...oreigner-99893
https://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hu...a-europe-72822

Basically: it's illegal, and you can't register it at home. :(

leooo 2 Jan 2024 20:29

It is possible to register it at home if your bike is anterior from the introduction of the European Conformity Certificate" (so it needs to be a bike from before 1972) and some European driving club will agree to provide you with a Carnet de Passage en douane is you provide them with a refusal from an Indian Automobile Club.

It is possible and has been done in the past.

We did it with "The Royal Silk Road", here are the videos of our adventures and here is the guide to do it that I wrote on HU
