UK to Thailand March 2014

Hi,

My wife and I are planning a trip from the UK to Thailand in 2014, we have just purchased a Merc 814D motorhome, We are looking for others to join us on the China section of the trip (or before) to keep the guide costs down, our dates are only approximate but we will be setting off mid to late March 2014 and arriving on the boarder of China around June, we have done many trips in South East Asia in the resent past and spend around 8 months a year there, we speak some Thai although we are both from the UK.

Quotes for Guide through China

Hi Heidi,

I have made some enquires about guide costs as follows, Liaa at Navo tours gave me a quotation for 13 days at CNY 40,000 and CNY 400 per person for any extra days, I thought that this was rather expensive so I contacted some people
that we met last January 2013 in Vientiane Laos that had just gone though China and they payed 2500 euros for 15 days from Sina.com and they say that they where very happy with the service they received.
We are traveling back to South East Asia (Flying not by road) next month for 4 months so I am hoping to meet up with them late May or early June and ask for more information about there trip from Switzerland to Thailand, I think after Thailand they are going on to Australia.

China bit and Cambodia etc

Hi Mark,

I believe that when traveling though China all the party must start and finish at the same boarder IE we are going to enter China via Mongolia and exit China via Laos so we would not be able to use the same guide, however, I must say that I have not checked this out myself but that seems to be what is said on the net.
The Hungarian bit we have family that we would be going to visit then the Greek bit we were thinking of parking up in Athens for a few weeks and doing a bit of Greek Island hopping we would also like to visit Moscow, but other than that we have no definite plans other than we would like to be on the Chinese boarder around June time.
I see you are thinking of visiting Cambodia, well we did a trip into Cambodia last year starting at the far southern end and exited into Laos at the far northern end what a great trip,we then traveled up though Laos almost to the Chinese boarder then back into Thailand, that is the same Chinese boarder that we will be coming though on this next trip, I think if you are going to travel in South East Asia you should not miss the chance to see Laos, we visit Laos twice a year every year it is so lay back.
If you decided to change your trip round a bit IE China Laos Cambodia Thailand Malaysia, Indonesia,we would change our trip a bit to travel though Cambodia then into Thailand from the far south of Cambodia, it would mean you doing Pakistan India and Nepal etc after Turkey and then meeting us in Mongolia or on the boarder of China or something like that.

Dave.

That's interesting.. My initial idea was to take that route, but it seemed very difficult to achieve..My brother is living in HoChiMin city working as a teacher so that's my ultimate destination as far as that part of the trip goes.

I am planning on being in Melbourne for Christmas .. flying my daughter out to meet me as I have a mate who emigrated there a couple of years ago. Other than that my travel plans are pretty "fluid"

Just been reading up on the KKH and I had thought it was possible to get to it from Tajikistan, but it seems I might have been mistaken.

Still these little problems are sent to give us something to think about :)

daveandles 11 May 2013 22:08

Vietnam

Hi Mark,

Well I will wait to hear from you after you have had time to have a look at the maps etc, I see just one problem in that we can not go into Vietnam as our truck is a right hand drive and the Vietnam authorities will most certainly not let you drive a right hand drive vehicle in Vietnam, however, you would be able to ride your bike into Vietnam from Cambodia or from Laos without any problem as both countries border Vietnam, then into Malaysia via Thailand.

Dave

trackdayrider 13 May 2013 19:38

OK no problem. To be honest I prefer the idea of Crossing China if that is possible... I wanted to stay "on the ground" rather than have to air freight from Nepal to Bangkok, but you're the first person i have heard say driving across China is possible - Maybe I've just been looking in the wrong places lol

I'll keep in touch

Cheers

daveandles 13 May 2013 21:58

Hi Mark,

It is possible to cross China but the cost is expensive, the first quotation I got was £3500 for the guide for 15 days in China, however,I then got a quotation for £2500 for the same length of time, so if we could get a party of say 5 vehicles then we could share the cost.

Hi All

I am leaving on the 27th March 2014 (my 39th birthday) for a solo RTW trip.

Heidi and I are already in touch and I had kind of ruled out China due to cost, choosing instead to go via Iran and either Pakistan or Dubai to India and on to Thailand via Bhutan, Burma, Loas and Cambodia.

China would be amazing if it was at the right cost and so please do keep us informed.

Sounds like the makings of a party!! : 0 )

Hi Steph,

Yes I would be only to pleased to keep you informed, We leave for South East Asia next week for 4 months (flying) and I will work on the details when I am there and let you both know the costings etc, I am hoping to meet up with a couple that we meet last January in South East Asia that are already on a RWT that are in Laos at the moment but are traveling though Thailand in the next few weeks and possibly going to stay with us at our home out there for a few days, so if that happens then they will be able to guide me in the right direction on costs etc.

Dave

tuohtroc 14 May 2013 17:02

This might sound a bit 'stupid'... but it starts feeling very real! (how can one get butterflies in the stomach about a motorcycle...:)
Talking with you all makes the planning feel more serious and fun at the same time. I just can't wait to start!!

daveandles 18 May 2013 07:34

Hi All,

Well we are almost ready to leave (fly) to go back to Thailand, I will be a bit sorry to leave our truck but we leave her (Plodd) having extra fuel tanks fitted (3 x 120lt) a domestic supply gas tank with gas test paper work, waist water tank and fresh water tank fitted so when we get back in September the truck should be almost ready to go other than small jobs that I will do myself, I have a English friend in Thailand that is going to help me with the detailed paper work and we are hoping to set up a web site ready for the trip so friends and anyone else will be able to follow our progress. Tuohtroc I understand what you are saying since I started the truck project only 2 months ago I have not been able to stop working or looking at it (200 hours or more up to now).
Anyway we are still hoping to get more people interested in the China crossing then it will be a real party, if anybody out there has any idea on the cost of the Carnet for a truck that would be helpful info.

Dave

Denmark to Thailand 2014

Hi there!

I am also planning a trip to thailand in 2014.
my plan is to drive through Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, uzbegistan, kazakstan, Russia, Mongolia, China, Laos, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand.

(Plan can change)

I would love to travel through China with you guys. So let me in on all the details when you know more.

N.B If anyone wants to travel together from Europe. Let me know. I would prefer to travel with one or two, since I don´t have a lot of experience in long distance riding.

/Kenneth

Edge1982 7 Jun 2013 08:28

Count me in for a trip to the east in 2014... (if my employer lets me go that is :-) )

Very interested in the China crossing too. An alternative for me is to do the short crossing from Tadjikistan to Pakistan so I can also avoid Iran.
A carnet de passage is more expensive if you include Iran...

Anyway, I keep following the posts for 2014.

maja 8 Jun 2013 19:18

This trip looks more interesting than the SE Asia one I am planning so if you don't mind old beer drinkers that ride old BMWs along I wouldn't mind being kept in the loop. Ride safe.

tuohtroc 8 Jun 2013 20:23

Hi Dave!
And welcome to all!
@KenANd, I don't have that much experience as well, I'm trying to get some more allroad training and probably, hopefully will return more experienced... just take it easy.
@Edge, zoals je hieronder kan zien, voor Pakistan is het carnet ook duurder, nog maar eens checken dus!
@Maja, the more old BMWs the better, I don't really like them if they are to shiny, (and cannot afford lol)

Dave, I just noticed you asked about the price of a carnet for a truck. I was just looking at it myself, for the bike.
The carnet itself is 195 € for members (ADAC) and 295 € for non-members.
The garantuees depend on the value of the vehicle, an overview of the costs you can find on the website of ADAC:
ADAC Reise & Freizeit - Carnet de Passages - Englisch

If you download the application form, the garantuee fees are on page 9.
In this form is all the info you need actually.

normal garantuee: current market value vehicle up to 15000 € = 1500 €

if you travel in Egypt, India, Iran, Pakistan, you need a special garantuee:
current market value up to 15000 €: 10000 €
current market value up to 7500 €: 5000 €.

Special garantuee for motorbikes: (needed in Iran, Pakistan, Egypt, India, SACU)
current market value up to 15000 €: 3000 €

I didn't check out the other suppliers yet.
Hope I didn't misplace any zero or other numbers, to be sure, check the ADAC website..
But now you have an idea...

Sunny greetings to all!
Heidi

More details

Hi Everybody,

I have just met for dinner the couple that have just done the very same trip other than they set out from Switzerland rather than the UK to Thailand, they are very nice people and very helpful, they are now on there way to Australia.
We first met them last year in Laos, anyway the details I have up to now is the cost of the Chinese guide. The guide has given me some prices the first price is for 1 vehicle 2 people for 30 days meeting on the Mongolian border and leaving us on the Chinese/Laos border = 4950 euros then the same again only 2 vehicles 4 people 3800 euros per vehicle, the guide also says that the more vehicles the cost go's down.
The main thing is that all the people going on the trip would have to get all there ideas together about what to visit and arrange a program with dates acceptable to everyone, the guide also said that we would need 30 days. I am now going to ask the guide about motorcycles and any special restrictions on the Chinese roads.
I will get back as soon as the guide gets back to me.

Guide service in china

Hi all.

Dave maybe you should contact China Motorcycle Tours and Rentals-Ride China also.

They seems to ride motorcycle them self, so it might be cheaper.

@Heidi: If you are interested we could go together next year? or would you rather go solo?

Anyway I would love to go to Guǎngdōng province to meet the Hakka-people and also to the great wall, to take a picture of it with my bike, and I would also like to meet the Miao-people, other then that, I have no demands :D

/Kenneth

tuohtroc 9 Jun 2013 18:39

Hi all!

Yesterday I sended the info about the carnet, but I forgot that for these countries: (dave's plan:) UK, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary, Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Albania ,Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldavia,
Ukraine, (Moscow) Russia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, China, Laos, Thailand,
you don't need a carnet as far as I can see...

I don't know if you have to import/ export your bike, need registration etc. in other countries. Who knows? For example Russia?

So if you are not going to Australia (where the carnet is required) then this may be something to consider: 'expensive guide in China' versus 'expensive carnet for Iran, Pakistan, India' And Myanmar is on this route, which is uncertain if this will be open for foreign motorcycles.
All of this has to do with the costs though, so if you would reallllllyyy love to ride in and visit China, you should just go for it! I myself am on a very thight budget and would love to see everything lol, so I have to look at all the pros and the cons...

Just thinking out loud. Please correct me if you see any errors in my thinking. Probably you will... :)

Thanks for the update Dave, very usefull information! I am curious about the motorcycle part...

@Kenneth, let's stay in touch, I am in contact with a german guy and english lady, to see if we could travel together or meet up at certain borders. I started out to think about this trip as solo, but some companions won't hurt :)
At this moment I am not sure about the route yet, my preference goes to Iran/ Pakistan/ India etc, but I am keeping options open. Because of my work I am not really sure when I can leave, and if I choose for 'China' I do have to be there at a fixed date... I will probably know more about this in septembre. I aim to leave Belgium in march.

Greetings! Heidi

daveandles 10 Jun 2013 02:41

Not good news

Hi Everybody,

I have bad news, the guide as come back to me re motorcycles and says that motorcycles can not travel on the highways (motorways, Autobahns) in China and that would mean traveling on normal roads, this would mean more Km and would mean staying in China longer, it would also have implications with our truck so it looks like the motorbikes are a none starter for us sad to say, I am very sorry about this disappointment as I was looking forward to a good party of people, anyway that leaves us now only looking for cars vans or trucks to join our trip.

Dave

trackdayrider 10 Jun 2013 12:53

Thats s real shame..
how many here are planning to travel by bike?
maybe we can still progress this plan and travel as a bike group and meet up with Dave's journey?

trackdayrider 10 Jun 2013 20:26

so just to follow up my last post there.. Is anyone here who's travelling by bike willing to go a head with a separate plan?
I would still like to cross China and if a group of bikes is the only way to travel together lets sort it out.. We could always meet up with Dave group as well... we'l just travel the more interesting routes ! lol

If so I'll start a new thread so as not to fill Dave's thread up
?c?

tuohtroc 10 Jun 2013 21:55

Thanks for informing us, Dave. Hope you find more cars / trucks!

Mark, good idea but as you could read (somewhere) in my previous posts, I prefer another route, but like to keep my eyes open for other options. I am only interested if the cost for the guide can go (way) down.
Maybe it is an idea to check out what Kenneth is suggesting, China motorcycle tours?
:)

Wow, that's a lot of money.

If I would cross China, it will only be for a few days to cover the distance between central Asia and Pakistan.

Maybe in a few years the China-situation will change... let's hope!

China is out

For me China is no longer an option, and duo to the Burma problems, i am now thinking of going to south india and then fly/ship my bike to malaysia and then up to thailand.

That's a lot more cost than i can bear!

Guess I will have to look at the alternatives again.

Cost of guide

Hi Everybody,

I have been watching your progress with costings, Just to let you know when I asks our guide about motorbikes she said that it would be 3000 euros per motorbike to add to our trip, I never asked about motorbikes without a car/van/truck.

Here is the new thread I started for anyone thinking about travelling a similar route by bikes.. just so we don't clog up Dave's thread :innocent:
