Crossing into Mexico from US in Sept 2012 and heading South

My husband and I are currently travelling around the USA two up on our Honda Transalp.

We are planning on crossing into Mexico approx mid September 2012 and heading on down to South America. We're looking for some other overlanders to meet up with and travel through some of Mexico and maybe some other parts of Central America.

We've not finalized a route and we have plenty of time so will not be rushing through.

Lisa :)

Blog: Hey I've got an idea…..

Growler 25 Jun 2012 03:31

Hi: I'm probably going to cross into Mexico at Eagles Pass the 2nd week of Aug but will be traveling slowly, look for an old (excuse me a more distinguished looking:D) guy on a dl650 from Nova Scotia. I'm stopping for Spanish lessons in Guate on my way down. Hope to see you on the way.

Cheers Slowphil(Philip)

Mexico City

If you want to come to Mexico City you are welcome to stay with us. We'll put you up and point you in the right direction.

ferretface 26 Jun 2012 16:26

Growler - we'll keep our eye out for you. We are also planning on taking some Spanish lessons along the way, have you pre-booked or is it something you can just turn up and book a few days before do you know?

Mikeymoto - maybe see you on the road :)

Elchen2012 - I'll drop you an email with more info. We're just heading into New Mexico and then heading up to Colarado.

Andy1979 - let us know if you do head down into US and decide to head to Mexico around the same time.

Garrydymond - thanks for the invite, we'll drop you a message when we get down towards you, would be great to get some tips :)

Happy travels :scooter:

Growler 27 Jun 2012 00:30

I've taken Spanish lessons before and the best way is just show up and check out the schools in whatever area your going to take them. I'm going to San Pedro on Lake Atitlan in Guatemala for mine I think, I took Spanish in Antigua and really enjoyed it but want something a little more laid back and out in the country this time. I'll no doubt change my mind 15 times before I get there:confused1:

Cheers Growler with 35 days left till leaving:D

good to know, i'll be on the same crossing with captain ludwig, he told me there were four bikes so far, any idea who the other two are?

WilderRider 13 Jul 2012 17:54

Well, I should be going there about the same time. I plan on crossing into Mexico late-mid September, through New Mexico and going south through mainland MX towards Guat. and points beyond, so I might be just ever so slightly behind you on a DR650.

rtwpaul 13 Jul 2012 20:31

i should be leaving Louisiana around Oct 1st, going to stay around a month in Guat to do language school, i'll cross into Mexico thru Texas

hi paul,

good to know indeed that you are on the same voyage. don't know who the other two are both we will found out in a few months or perhaps even earlier. I will be in Guate too, sounds like a HUBB (mini) meeting!?

I will be riding a dr650 (too) but still in the phase of search and rescue.

i haven't decided where in Guate where i'll do language school, i'm thinking Antigua, interesting town and lots close by to go and do daily rides, my timeframe at school will be determined by my leaving date and how quick/ slow i go thru mexico, so i figure on 2-4 weeks in school

Ludwig said he will email contact details for the other riders closer to the time.

having went thru the borders last years in CA they are a pain in the a$$, much better with two guys as they send you to different building and far away from your bike...just for security mainly

let me know if you need garmin maps for cent. and s. america i have them all, some of them are routable to a certain extent, good to have if you use GPS

Sent you a PM about those maps. And I just met a KLR rider that spent 5 months in Antigua at one of the schools and had nothing but excellent things to say about it. Including the low cost.

Astockjoc 15 Jul 2012 04:23

Mexico/Guatemala Oct-Nov?

Like others, i'll be heading to Mexico this fall. I currently live on the panhandle of Florida and will enter Mexico at one of the Texas boarder crossings. Haven't picked a firm date yet. And, like many of you, i plan to spend some time in Guatemala learning Spanish. Maybe a couple months. Then head further south. I'll be traveling solo so if i could hook up with any of you for part of the trip it would be cool.

tnx for the offer for the maps, i'm good (i think). friend of mine got free maps of latin america. even if you would send them to me, i'm a digibetic.

good idea to cross some borders together, for the reason of safety and fun. and in general: the more the merrier.

border crossing first week of september

Hello,

i travel from Alaska to Argentina and will cross the border to Mexiko first week of september. Either in Tijuana or Tecate - not sure yet. Does anyone here planning border crossing at the same time? Would be nice to ride together for a couple of days. I will ride the baja, then take the ferry to mazatlan.

Cheers, Matt (from Germany)

WilderRider 23 Jul 2012 23:19

Matt,

Looks like you are going to be about two weeks ahead of me and heading to the wrong part of MX, but depending on your speed, I might be in Central MX about the time you cross over from Mazatlan. Keep a look out for a DR650 from Colorado.

Monni 25 Jul 2012 16:22

Hi WilderRider,
i've planned a week for the baja. But maybe we meet in Central Mexiko.

Nobody else here crossing the border first week of september?

southboundmoto 25 Jul 2012 20:08

Going through Mexico Nov. 1st

Hey everyone-
Great to see so many heading south. I'll be leaving San Francisco around the 1st of November for SA, wouldn't mind some company through Mexico. I'm open to traveling Mainland or Baja...
I'll be cruising on an F800GS with dirt tires.

Blog to come...
til then- Bill Beckwith

California to Patagonia

Hi everybody...I will be leaving California on my way home in Chile around last week in August.Travelling on a 1980 Yamaha XT 500 so a kind of slow but if anybody needs help with mechanical issues or language just let me know.I am pretty sure we will see each other at some point.
Drive safe and have fun !!:scooter:

WilderRider 30 Aug 2012 16:30

Looks like my departure days are firming up a little more. I should be crossing into MX September 24 and heading south. I doubt I will spend that much time in northern MX, but will head towards the southern beaches before I start slowing down too much.

I can't decide if I am going to go through Copper Canyon again, but if anyone is going to be around there, I might head that way.

rtwpaul 31 Aug 2012 03:49

i'll be crossing around the first week of October

AndyT 31 Aug 2012 05:58

I am planning on leaving the USA around October 1, heading for Guatemala to spend a month or so in a Spanish school there. Would be interested in company on the way down. I speak reasonable tourist Spanish now. I live in San Antonio Texas, about 3 hours from a couple different border crossings, if anyone wants a place to stay or pick up any last minute items before crossing into Mexico.

RickMcD 31 Aug 2012 16:03

Headed out again!

Hi Rick,

It has been a long time, and yes, I read your blog on the Baltic trip. I need to get across the pond one of these times. I am happily unemployed this summer, I spent 8 weeks riding the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route on a pedal bike, 2500 miles on gravel roads and 200,000 feet of total climb. I am going to the HU meet in North Carolina next week, then coming back to San Antonio for awhile before going to Guatemala. Planning on coming home around Thanksgiving, so not continuing south this time. Still selling Harleys? I have an XR1200 now, although I'm not riding it to Guatemala.

rtwpaul 31 Aug 2012 22:21

Well, depending on where and when, you might still be a little ahead of me. I am still on track to cross into Mexico in about 2 weeks, but I will be heading down through Chihuahua.

lorraine 11 Sep 2012 21:10

Anyone who makes it to Chile, you have a place to stay the night. I'm 178 km north of Santiago, little cabin overlooking the Pacific Ocean. You have to be a dog lover, there's four of them! (Yes AndyT, Dog and Bruiser are still going strong.)

Email is best, LC at LorraineChittock.com for directions.

See you soon!

Hey guys. I just found this thread thanks to rtwpaul. I will be leaving Oklahoma October 1st and plan to cross somewhere around Brownsville or Reynosa. This is my first trip and sure would like to hook up with someone at least for the border crossing, maybe longer. I also would like to hold up in Antigua for a spanish imersion if anyone has a lead on a school. My plan is to make it ti Lima around Cristmas and from there I have no plans.

this is late in the game so if anyone want to get in touch just text or call my cell. Like I say i'm easy going. If anyone wants to team up to cross the border I would appreciate it.

Dale
918-261-5932 my cell number, i dont work much so call anytime

rtwpaul 18 Sep 2012 03:19

check out guatemala365 dot com for language schools,

make note of the volcano that just went off about 15-20 miles from antigua and some places were evacuated so confirm they reopened

airdale74451 18 Sep 2012 03:31

Thanks Paul. i have been on the Rosetta Stone for about 6 months so maybe it will come without too much trouble. I should be crossing the border im guessing around the 3rd or 4th.

rtwpaul 18 Sep 2012 03:34

i'll be in larado around oct 3rd if i can get my electrical issue fixed

airdale74451 18 Sep 2012 03:46

what route are you taking? copper canyon?

rtwpaul 18 Sep 2012 04:08

no a more easterly route, mountains and small villages, copper canyon is too far west for me this time

airdale74451 18 Sep 2012 04:36

have you left? im starting October 1st from Oklahoma

airdale74451 18 Sep 2012 04:43

Headed South

RTW Paul....yup headed to Barrie on the 20th. See you there. Bring your rain gear !
Airdale...this may not line up with your trip, as the closest I get to Oklahoma is when I pass through Texarkana around the 11th of October with the next stop planned for San Antonio and a pilgrimage to the Buckhorn Saloon before the last leg to cross at Los Ebanos. The ferry is a hand pulled (five guys on a cable) flat deck that has been in operation since the mid 1700's. It takes three or four cars and a handful of foot passengers. Not verified but I hear it may be the last year of operation.

airdale74451 19 Sep 2012 03:26

the ferry sounds like a must see but I read today about the prison break and its not far from there. well im still having second thoughts on this bike. I could get a used klr or bmw and the trip might go better.:scooter:

garrydymond 20 Sep 2012 00:45

I came across on the ferry in 2009. It was a neat experience. There is customs and immigration on the US side but there was nothing on the Mexican side. This was not a problem for us as we live in Mexico and the bike is also Mexican. In your case it will mean riding to the nearest border crossing that can do the paper work. This may have changed since 2009. I think it is worth the effort as there was something unreal about coming out of the States (with all its rules and regulations) on a liitle fery pulled by 3 guys.
The ferry only works until 4.30 (or something like that) and we were just too late to get it when we went so had to wait until the next day.
Here's a link to a Ride Report with pics of the ferry http://advrider.com/forums/showthrea...ty+indy+motogp
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_LXDuuQoe_aQ/Sq...0/P1050503.JPG

Here's a pic of the ferry
Looking at this pic which was taken from the US side there is some sort of an office on the Mexican side so perhaps you can do all the paperwork there.

airdale74451 20 Sep 2012 01:33

That looks like the type the out-of-the-ordinary things that make a trip memorable. Any more recomendations?

garrydymond 20 Sep 2012 02:03

Depends which way you are coming. Real de Catorce is a neat place. I would also recommend "La Sierra Gorda de Queretaro" with a visit to Xilitla to see Sir Edward James' wierd sculputers. Great roads and an eccentric English man's folies.
If you go to Durango you can go to Villas del Oeste which is an old movie set where John Wayne and company made a few movies.
If you have a route I can give you a few more suggestions.

Garry

airdale74451 20 Sep 2012 02:15

I want to start with the ferry and then follow the gulf coast to maybe Tampico, then Mexico City and Acapulco and south to Antigua, Guatemala. Nothing is set in stone. I'm riding solo and can go where my interests send me.

garrydymond 20 Sep 2012 02:48

Tampico you can go Cuidad del Valle and then to Xilitla and from there to Jalpan de la Sierra and then to Ezequiel Montes. You can get a tour of the Freixenet wine cellars and see how they make the wine. Then acroos to Atlacomulco and on to Toluca and finally Lerma where I can meet you and guide you to my house where we can give you some tips on places to go and things to do both in the city and on your way south.

airdale74451 20 Sep 2012 03:02

I will look all that up and thanks for the invite to your home. There is something I want to see a sculpture at a university, I will have to find the location again. Lets keep in touch.

garrydymond 20 Sep 2012 03:12

My wife is an artist. She makes sculptures and all sorts of other things. I am hoping she will one day become famous and pay all my future bills. She may be able to help you find the sculpture you want to see and can definately take you to see ones you've never heard of!

Garry

airdale74451 20 Sep 2012 03:27

That is great. I found the info from a lady that lives near the university.

She wrote: The sculpture name is coatl (means snake in nahuatl) made by Helen 2scobedo.
