FYI, I have just had my long service leave approved (basically a legal right to bonus paid holidays working for the one employer for 10 plus years) for April 2006 thru Sept 2006. Was reading through the Hubb and your trip is an appealing option...although the only bike tours I have done have been on good roads in Western countries (92: 3 mths US, 98: 3 mths Scandinavia/UK/Holland).

Half way RTW

I don't plan to go until spring 08. From the UK to Norway, Finland and then to Japan across Russia or take the bottom route through Turkey and Iran. I've ridden bikes all my life but never had 'an adventure'. I ride off road (450 Gas Gas) and have done Europe / Baltics many times. I had a new R1200GS until September when a car and trailer turned across my path and the bike was written off. Just taken delivery of a 1200 Adventure. Like you, I'm looking for company for the trip but will go on my own if company is not forthcoming. I'll be 57 but with the flexibility to take three or four months off work. I went to the HU meeting in the UK this year and will be there again next year. Great source of infomation. Good luck with your plans.

Hi guys
Interesting reading your plans - my wife and I are planning something similar.
Flying to North Wales to see my mum in March 2008. Then buying (most probably) a KTM990.
Planing on going the 'low road' through the Ukraine, Kazakhstan (Almaty) up to Ulaanbaatar; then come back via the high road, Omsk, Ufa, Moscow, St Petersburg, down the coast back to Wales.
I figure 3 months round trip.
Any comments or suggestions?

Regards
Michael

Hi Alan
Planning on getting to North Wales Mid March 2008 and spending a couple of weeks with Mum (and celebrating our 21st wedding anniversary); then getting the bike sorted.
Probably early April I'd say at this early stage.
I'll keep posting as plans get firmer.

Xmas to all
Regards
Mick and Colleen

Hi Michael, beginning of April too soon for me,check your weather/seasons you might be a bit early. we are going end of May
your time for trip looks a bit tight time wise. I am no expert on these items, and will be double checking my own departure date.
A very good source for information is of course on the HUBB might pay you to put a thread on the route section, there are some serious travellers use this Hubb and they are very willing to help.
Keep in touch.
cheers for now,
merry Xmas Alan

Hi Alan,

Is it too late to get involved? Do you have enough people to join?

I'm new to all of this, but haven't been able to stop thinking about travelling or Dakar since watching Boorman and co.

If there are still a place I'd be keen to talk to you further.

Regards, Ben

2008 Trip

Interested to see that Tedmagnum can't make the trip until 2008. I am planning on a trip in April 08. Beginning to make enquiries about carnets and the like. Open to routes but have loose plans for Europe, down through Turkey and Iran, through the 'Stans' to Mongolia and back through Russia. I have about three months free to do it in. Got a GS Adventure and have riden off road 'green-laning'. Would do the trip alone but would prefer company. Anyone interested?

Round the World 2007

Hallo there,
I have been reading your posts with interest and joy. Me and my brother are setting of May 8th to RTW. Similar route as Long way round, but instead of riding through UK and mid-europe, we will take the ferry fro Iceland to Norway and ride north Norway and Sveden and the south Finland and to Estonia, Latvia and from there to the east into Russia.

But are you going to Magadan ? Because I have not find any way from there to USA. Do you know how to get from there ?

Magadan

Hi, thanks for interest in our trip.
Magadan seems to be a big problem at the minute as i am sure you Know already.(no flights to Anchorage)
We desperately want to get to Anchorage, possibly go via
Vladivostok - South Korea or Japan but have not checked the possibilities yet. (i know that you can fly bikes from S. Korea to L. Angeles)
If you find a way please let me know and i will do like wise.
Good luck with your planning and might see you on the way around.
cheers Alan

Hi again Paul
As far as I can gather, we don't need carnets in western Europe and Russia.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong please.

Regards
Mick
