Polar Bears to Penguins tour 2009

Seeing as we started this thread, Sue and I thought we would do you the courtesy of providing an update, firstly, can I apologise for not replying often enough. I am now in my last 3 months before retirement, sort of strange really you do the same job for 30 years and then having had all that time to prepare for retirement your'e not ready. Sue on the other hand cannot wait! I have to be honest at some point in the future I will have to look at getting a job, not that you can't retire at 53 it's just we figure if we keep travelling we don't have to face up to it until the kids tell us to grow up! Planning wise we are now looking at shipping the GSA (air freight) to Anchorage the first week in June, (we're using James Cargo, both Roddy and Giles have been extremely helpful) and Sue and I will follow the week after. We will be using the visa waiver programme to get our 90 day visa so a return ticket is a must, and return tickets are about half the cost of a single trip. We did consider applying for a B2 tourist visa to give us more time but to be truthful 90 days should be more than enough, still trying to master Spanish but depending on timescales we would like to spend some time in CA and learn the language. Have had some great help from Steve Coleman, one of the sales staff at Alan Jeffries BMW dealership in Shipley he and his wife are seasoned travellers and he’s full of first hand knowledge (guess who’s getting a call the first time we hit trouble). I need to find some way of posting our proposed route so everyone can get some idea of which way we will be heading, but here’s a rough idea ( Anchorage-Denali-Fairbanks-Prudhoe-back down turn left Dawson- Stewart Cassier highway-Rockies-Montana-Yellowstone-ride around the NP’s for a while-turn right-need to go to San Francisco usual touristy stuff- Baja-Mexico (have a day off!) and so on, by the time we’ve gone this far we should be adept at planning ahead and got enough info from friends and you lot to tackle Central and South America. You all know of course that as soon as bike turns a wheel it’s all likely to change, but like we said in the earlier posts if we have to make a detour to have chilled one with you lot it’s time well spent. I think the bike is as ready as it needs to be, but being new to this two wheel lark at some point you may be making a detour to dig us out of the crap! Everyone to press has been spot on with advice and support, anyone who’s taken the P%*” has done so constructively! anyone who wants to ask anything just PM us. A huge hello to everyone who’s offered help or just the opportunity to say see you on the road. This thread could lead to a whole new world for Sue, either way we're in it to the land of fire. I did some of this journey back in 2002 - Anchorage to Mexico - brilliant ride. As for further south - not sure. I suggest you get in touch with Kevin and Julia Sanders - Globebusters.com. They run a tour for this particular trip and would be a very good source of suggestions and ideas - fantastic people :D- worth talking to. Good luck! Ian |

I'll be moto'n around south of the boarder during that time frame too. I'm leaving Washington state in October and heading south (already spent too much time in the arctic :cool4: ).

Trans Canada and the Americas top to bottom
Hi Graham and Sue I will be flying out to Toronto on the 7th of June,and hopefully clear the bike from customs on the 8th,the plan then is to ride to Nova Scotia on the east coast, then right across Canada to the west coast.Then up to Prudhoe bay Alaska before turning south for the long ride down to Tierra Dl Fuego,so it looks like we could meet up at some point on the journey,i will be riding a 1150 gs adventure black and yellow. September crossing into Mexico en route to TDF
I plan to cross into Mexico at Brownsville, TX around 9-18-09 on my way to Ushuaia. Will fly to Medellin from Panama on 10-7-09. Have to fly me & the bike home (Illinois) from BA in time for Christmas with my wife & kids. Hope to find a rider to watch bikes with while crossing some CA borders, & also to cross the Bolivian salt flats with. I'll be on a red '07 KLR, solo.

North to South Americas

Thanks for the redirection Graham and Sue. I am hoping to start from Anchorage in mid August going north and then south until mid to late Jan 2010. Does anyone have tips for riding to Prudhoe Bay, is it worth the ride. I am impressed by the amount of knowledge on this site. I have read all the replies but I'm not sure what D2D is any explanations. Cheers |
The ride north is worthwhile, but looooonnnnggg (and you return the same way you came). I did some trekking in the Brooks Range, and if equipped this is the highlight: tundra mountains full of caribou, moose, wolves and grizzlies. If you're still in the subarctic by the end of august you'll begin to see the aurora late at night, but only if you're looking for it.
For an American, forever subject to political scheming and debates about the exploitation of oil reserves on the North Slope, a trip north to see what all the fuss is about (and what it looks like once developed) is fascinating. All this aside, the scenery's actually better in the Alaska range and the various coastal mountains. enjoy, Mark |

The Americas

Have a great journey! I did it between May 2007 and February this year, and loved every minute. Not one single bad moment, no bribes,no bad cops, no bad people, no problems. A totally life changing experience. All of Latin America is fantastic: the people are just so warm and friendly and welcoming. Colombia is my favourite destination, followed by Mexico and Ecuador. Don't fret about spares/service: I found everything I needed in Mexico, Costa Rica, Colombia, Chile, Argentina. Cheers, David.
