No advice yet as I don't start my ride to TDF until October, from Seattle, but I can help if you are passing next year. Just bring PG tips and HP sauce and I'll be happy to provide accommodation and anything I have learned.

Deadhorse or not to Deadhorse...
I just got home (Bellingham, Washington State, USA) from a ride up to Deadhorse and more. I'm 66 and ride an F650GS. I made it up to Deadhorse and back down to Fairbanks in 2 long days - in the rain all the way up and half way back down. There is no reason to do it, except to say you did. But, it ain't impossible, just hard on equipment in the mud -- I spent $27 at the car wash in Fairbanks trying (unsucessfully) to get all the caked on muck off me and the bike. Heading to Usuhaia in October of this year; plan to be there for Christmas.

Graham, don't worry..it's going to be ok! I've drive down south in 1995 from Los Angeles to south of Brazil (tha's where I'm from) in a SOLO trip and I've had lot's of fun (at begining I was myself worried)...It turned to be a trip of my life! and as I'm still very alive, now I have another "trip of my lifetime" adventure!!! :mchappy:

Me too
Hey Graham and Sue
Just to add to the list, I will be in the vicinity in August 09. Heading to Anchorage and then across Canada and into the US. Probably a little later than you guys but still, the wonder of travel, is that paths do cross! It will be me on a DR350 and Baron Bolton on his XR650L See you around, and keep us updated! Cheers Char P.S Good luck with all the prep work |
Cheers Guys
Hi Tom
Congratulations on the speed trip, hope everything goes smooth on your way down south! will keep in touch if that's OK, you've probably got answers to some of our questions? Hi Char I'm sure we'll meet up somewhere along the road. Would love to get to the meeting you and Baron Bolton are organising hopefully we'll be back from our trip to Switzerland/Italy by then so if we can we will if not we'll keep you posted on our progress Hi Tuzirix From your website it looks like there's an environmental agenda tied in with your next trip, good look with that (a support vehicle as well - I wish!) like you say Carpe Diem. Hi G&S2up
I live in Homer, AK and am considering and planning a trip simalar to yours in 2009. I am only 4 hours from Anchorage and would love to meet up with you before you head south and maybe travel with you. Let me know your thoughts. Charlie |
Still on track
Hi Charlie
The planning for the trip from AK to TDF is still going well, we are taking two weeks out on Thusday to try an experimental run to Switzeland/Italy. If we are still talking to each other when we get back I will let you know how we got on! Have you any idea of your proposedroute or time frame? I'm sure we can arrange to meet somewhere on the road, and if you know the top end well we would appreciate any help or advice. Stay Upright Graham & Sue |
Upper E
Hi
Still in planning stage with several options. I live here in AK but am not yet familar with Upper end. Hope to travel there very soon. Mabe within a month. This would be a prepatory trip for longer trips. Just recently got my bike back and doing final maintence, repairs, mods etc. Do you know your time frame yet for AK ???. Let's keep in touch. I may be able to head to Prudhoe Bay in a week or two. I have some commitments to clear up and see how things go. Charlie |
Hi Graham and Sue, I just got back from the Alaska part of my trip, and plan to leave Edmonton in August 2009, with a goal of TDF by Christmas, then a slow trip back - another year or so. Anyway, my plan was to ride the Pacific coast down to Mexico, then?. Might just be about the time you are heading south too.

How does anyone get any work done?
I am along with a few other people in the middle of planning a trip, and i am more the certain that a few of us will meet up on the road!
But how is anyone concentrating on their work? I am baffeled, because I jsut cant get anything done at work without thinking of my bike and looking at places to go! And there is still 11 months till I even start! LOL! On a side note ... to cut down on costs, North of Mexico, I would guess that camping would be the most appropriate, any thoughts? Mitch |
once i get back to the states next september i plan on starting my trip down to TDF around October or so. it'll be nice to meet up with some others that are on their way as well.
to those who are starting to plan now, do you just have an end point or are you starting to plan much in between?? |
Great Trip!
Hi Graham and Sue,
I´m currently making the trip solo and I´m currently in the Galapogos Islands - no, not on the bike! I would take three days extra and go to Prudhoe Bay. You´ll get your bike/s messed up but at least you will have done the entire trip to the two furthest points. Make sure you book into the Prudhoe Bay hotel, it´s the best place to stay. Use off road tyres for the Dalton Highway, you´ll need them if it´s been raining. You can use the jet wash in Fairbanks to get cleaned up!! You´ll have a fantastic time and meet some great people!
