LOL but I bet she looks like she's packing a concealed Glock, semi-auto with carbon fibre grips, titanium trigger guard and laser sights...?

After spending a bewildered hour reading the adv. site (and a mispent youth watching American TV and popping .22's at rabbits) I do buy the cultural difference thing, but for any European looking in, this kind of fear fetish is one of the weaker parts of US culture. The irony is it kills 30,000 of them every year.

These chaps are just frightened of overextending themselves on their trips in the backwoods and are looking for reassurance - some metal in their pants. Bless them, but I wouldn't like to be hiking in on one of their campsites whilst they're having a tizzy about the 'noises' in the trees.

Anyway, how can N.America be boring ? There's mountains, deserts, lakes, beaches, BMW dealers on every corner, no language barrier (well, almost), the list of good things is quite long.

Yeah, all with perfectly good paved road, lot's of no trespassing signs and tons of rules and regulations.....boring!!

Try Canada then !
The roads are shit , the no trespassing signs are full of bullet holes and can't be read and there is nobody about to enforce any rules or regs anyway .
Plus we have the odd bit of scenery here and there .

No wonder parts of the world are scared of the USA!

a good way to spend an afternoon at work reading that Adv rider page.

They all sound a touch worked up about carrying weapons do they not? so any visitors should be scared of getting your ear bashed in with macho talk and no action. Seems good these gun wieldign maniacs are all kept in their own country.

We should just get out and see our wee planet before we totaly destroy it.

Would a Donk not just bungee ontop of a side box? don't really know how heavy they are.

happy days

I don’t think Donk would like to be bungee chorded to a side box! I consulted the touratech website FAQ regarding the correct packing procedure for Donk.

"mount you Donk(!) in a position that will facilitate quick access if the need arises for rapid deployment. Donk should not be mounted too far to the rear (bet he's glad of that) as weight distribution can cause front end wobbles (I know the feeling) If forced to mount your Donk to the rear (brave man) offset the weight distribution by mounting a barrel of Fosters above the front wheel.”

Seems like a lot of work to me, I think it may be easier all round to get a separate bike for your Donk, What would he ride I wonder???

robin A 7 Jul 2006 13:21

donk's bike

If you are being sensible your donk should be equipped with the same bike as yourself to save on spares. it may be an idea to restrict donk's bike so you can keep an eye on donk at all times.

on the otherhand a donk needs a simple unbreakable machine with a good carrying capacity for 4x, prederably chilled.

i do think carrying a donk however is just going to attract trouble. just use your head and stay clear of stupid places. think about all the extra paperwork which would be required to travel with a donk some countries may need a licence for one.

NamasteBuzz 7 Jul 2006 13:48

Apparently what we all need is a Taurus Total Titanium Tracker .357 Magnum with a ported barrel.

Check this fine article out by Christopher Lee

http://www.chuckhawks.com/motorcycle_firearms.htm

The author is a Doctor of Psychology and has been a personal self defense instructor for over twelve years. It fails to add how long he's been an inmate of some psychiatric institution.

The guy is totally serious and totally nuts.

Good point Robin, obviously there are pros and cons with Donk ownership, on my last trip I found that my Donk became increasingly expensive to maintain as they run on pure alcohol.

Not sure about problems with difficult boarder crossings or paperwork, I have never had my Donk examined by customs officials. When questioned I have simply show them a photo of my Donk, that seems to do the trick!

I think that Donk should be equipped with those Harley trikes that they used to sell ice cream from (no need to restrict a Harley!!):innocent:

Hi NamasteBuzz

Christopher Lee never used to be like this in his Hammer Horror days, Sad how some people change.

Matt Cartney 7 Jul 2006 16:49

NamasteBuzz,
That's one of the funniest things I've seen in ages! The obvious alternative to packing whilst on a bike doesn't seem to have occured to him: Don't be a f*&^ing loony in the first place!

Or maybe this nicely prepared Ural.

Dodger 8 Jul 2006 03:39

We don't need no steenkin handguns .

Of course Christopher Lee forgets to mention the little fact that you would have to learn to shoot left handed ,the throttle being on the right of course , unless you ride an Indian .

Us Norton riders have always had the answer !
A bloody big Bren gun , good for maniac cagers , Messerschmidts, flea bitten mongrels and the odd duck or two for supper .
How delightful.
