international driver's license needed for S.Africa?
 

Does anyone know if one needs an intl driver's license for South Africa or can i get by with my Canadian motorcycle license?

Basic answer .. you should have an IDP. And your Kunuck licence.

Best if you have laminated copies... and show the laminated copies when asked. Of course take the real ones too.

I've rented cars in SA and never needed more than my DL from back home. Doesn't seem like it would be different for a motorcycle- although if the motorcycle designation on your license is cryptic (if it says "class 3" or something) an international DL could help. Have fun!

I spent a couple of years driving from S Africa to the UK a while back. Had an IDP but never got asked for it anywhere.

I brought one and they asked for it at the car rental. After that, useless.
But if you don't have one and go to a large rental company. . You can probably Wing it.

Not in SA but further north a policeman asked to see my license, gave him my IDP and he wanted a fortune to return it to me, ended up riding off and used my UK one there after in SA, Botswana and Namibia no problem. Next time will print and laminate a copy for the corrupt few.

Just get one! I don't know about the price in Canada but they are only a fiver in the UK. Mine is up for renewal in a couple of months
