Moto temporary import in Chile
I’m currently in Bolivia on a moto trip from Colombia to Chile. I am assuming that the moto which has Colombian plates will get a 90 day limit in Chile, like my visa. I am leaving Chile on 23 Sept and hoping to return at the end of Jan 24 to carry on the trip further south.
Does anyone know if it is possible to get an extension of the temporary import (ie extra 60 days) until then? Alternatively is it possible to do the same in Argentina (ie extended temporary import?). Cheers Andrew |
Hi Andrew,
it is true that you get up to 90 days for your motorcycle when entering Chile. Make sure to check on the dates. You can ask for additional 90 days online through the customs website. The process is called “Prórroga de permiso de ingreso temporal de vehículos extranjeros” Safe travels Martin |
Moto temporary import in Chile
In Argentina it is possible to get a longer TIP when you cross the border, but be sure to ask and check dates they give you. Sometimes they do this automatically, even if you don’t request it. Standard is 90 days, the longer is 8 months, as I recall. This is assuming nothing has changed since 2020 and COVID.

Note that you can only ask for an extension if the bike is already temporarily imported as you have to upload your TITV. I just checked my mails about when I asked for the extension for my own motorcyle in 2021. The customs webpage wouldn’t work properly and I had to do it via mail. Hope it is working now. Patience and persistence is key. Good luck and keep us updated!

Just saw this post re: change in Argentina TVIP rules (8 month TVIP no longer possible). I know the OP of this post - we stored our bikes with Ed and Elisa for two years during COVID and they helped us with the interdiction process. I would assume this is reliable info.

We are in correspondence with the Argentine Aduana and will update. There is good news for foreign tourists wanting to leave a foreign registered vehicle/moto in Argentina indefinitely. The vehicle/moto "interdiction" process initiated under Covid, is available and permits foreign tourists to park their foreign registered vehicle/moto indefinitely in Argentina. The initial process takes a couple of days and the release from "interdiction" process takes about one week. The vehicle/moto cannot be ridden/moved while under 'interdiction." Once again, there is no way of knowing the status of the 8 month TVIP at any particular border. New regulations might or might not be enforced. I apologize for any confusion regarding this issue. If I don’t get the exension would you advise coming back as planned and heading in the direction TdF to a quiet border crossing and hope to get out without a drama? glad to hear that you made it to Santiago. To answer you questions: 1)I would go ahead and ask for the extension of the TVIP right away. One for the peace of mind and two because it might take some time to be reviewed and approved. 2)Your tourist visa and the TVIP are two different things. You shouldn´t have any problems to leave and return. 3)In my experience it doesn´t matter if your reason for the extension is not in their list as long as you deliver a plausible background story. Furthermore if it is you being sick then it would be an officially recognized reason and you should go and see a doctor here in Chile to provide a certificate. 4) I strongly advise against overstaying your TVIP. Fines and difficulties seem to vary but they charge you per day and in your case that would result in a very significant amount. I also sent you a private message. Thanks for that info Martin, it’s really helpful. I’ll go ahead with the extension request before we leave for Australia early Friday morning. I’ll tell the truth and add that for personal reasons I need to return home, but will come back and leave Chile on or before any extension expires.
Actually I met up with my wife, son and his partner at San Pedro de Atacama (I missed their flight by a few hours as I didn’t get from Argentina to Santiago in time). We’ve had five days up here, it’s been good, and fly back tomorrow. Cheers Andrew |

Hi Martin,
I got my 90 day extension of the TIVP for Chile! I used the link you gave me, wrote a letter saying that I needed to interrupt my trip from Colombia to TdF due to personal and family reasons, and had to return to Australia. Supplied photos of the Colombia licencia de transito, passport, and original 90 day TIVP as requested. I was also asked to detail where the moto would be stored and who would be responsible. Approval came through the next day! So I am happy about that, and am planning to come back to Santiago at the end of January 2024, get the Enfield back on the road to TdF and then back up some or all of the way to Colombia. Probably park it in Uruguay at this stage, as I believe they allow up to 12 months TIVP. Thanks again for your help. Cheers Andrew |
