Thank you for the great info newbrider! That's all my questions answered!
PS. I have been looking at those as well but availability seems low right now! I'm going to search more tomorrow and hopefully test drive a tenere 250 if possible! |
RE Himalayan

Hi NewbRider
Thanks for the clear and detailed explanations on how to buy a bike in Colombia and sell it in Chile. My plans go in the opposite direction. I have found a KTM in Chile and would like to sell it in Colombia after cruising SA. I would appreciate any suggestions on how to proceed. Regards from BCN. Regarding the RE Himalayan I must say I took one of those through Northen India (Ladak) Nepal, China, Tibet, Bhutan and it performed incredibly well. Robust as hell. |
Hey mate, happy to help. But need more detailed info. Chilean bike or foreign bike? But basically, all the info here applies the same going the other way.

Hey guys, thanks for all the info!
I'm heading to Colombia in a week (probably Bogota!) and will follow all these steps to buy a bike! Super excited for the trip, my plan is to start in Colombia, spend at least 3 weeks there and then make my way down to Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia and then sell it there somewhere again after 3 months :-) |
Updated Info

My boyfriend and I are hoping to travel to Colombia and buy some bikes in December from a dealership. We also have aspirations to travel through Colombia to Ecuador and maybe Peru. I was wondering if you successfully completed your trip and if you could verify all the info earlier in this thread was accurate! Also, how was crossing both borders? Any issues or extra documentation needed? Sidenote: If anyone knows whether or not we could leave our bikes (they would be registered in our names in Colombia) in the South of Ecuador... without us there? I know you don't need a carnet, but would we be able to leave Ecuador for a few months and then fly back to continue our trip south to Peru and beyond? Thanks!! |
no problem
been there done that . you can leave your bikes in Ecuador as long as the insurance doesn't run out, although time in Ecuador is restricted to your passport 180 days per year there are all kinds of storage places in Guayaquil close to the airport go on line and check them out. my only recommendation is buy a cover for the bike because Guayaquil is humid and out of sight out of mind at the storage is the only way to go
just make sure your bikes are insured for the time you are on the road and it has to done done in Colombia. and you can't sell your bikes anywhere but Colombia Have fun Colombia is the best place to buy a bike. you won't be disappointed feliz viajes |
