Pantanal-Iguzu-Buenos Aires?

Any ideas on good routes to take for this part of Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina?
Thanks
Susan

Chau

If you are going back from Iguazu to BsAs through the state of Entre Rios, make sure you read up on the posts of the corrupt police in that state. It was the only problem i had in the whole of argentina, and as you will see from the many posts on here they target bikers and hire cars on Ruta 14.

They were asking for 200 dollars using the same lines and scams as listed on here. i ended up arguing the point and not paying anything, but was then stopped 5 times in the same afternoon, taking up about 2 hours in total.

to be forewarned is to be forearmed, and will give you an advantage if they try some of there tricks.

the only problem in an otherwise brilliant country.

cheers
mike

Thanks Mike,
I read some of those posts but hadn't put it together exactly where in Argentina Ruta 14 was until your post. Sounds like an exasperating day. Getting stopped by the cops 5 times in one day must be a record.

But I am thinking that if I go the route Raule suggested I miss out on Ruta 14 entirely. I see that Ruta 14 is further east than Resistencia and Rosario on Ruta 11.

My question is, is the problem just on Ruta 14 or is it the entire state of Entre Rios?

I just might end up going through Uruguay. That country seems pretty laid back.

In any event I will check those Argentina police posts out in more detail... Thanks for the heads up.
Susan

Susan,

From what I've heard, it's only that part of Ruta 14 in Entre Rios where people have had problems. I haven't talked to anybody who has had problems anywhere else. The rest of Argentina is definately "laid-back", so don't miss out on it just because of the problems on that particular stretch of highway. I just completed Ruta 40 up to Salta, and have to say that it is the most scenic route in Argentina, especially the Lake District (not to be missed), and the provinces of La Rioja, Catamarca, and Salta. There was the ocasional police stop, but they usually just waved me through. If they did stop me, they were always very polite and correct, and only asked for minimal documents (if anything at all).

You also might want to reconsider the route that Raul gave you. Brazil has 7.000 km of beaches - some of the most beautiful in the world - and is know for it's beaches and parties. Most of the Brazilian culture exists on the coast. If you take that route you miss out entirely on all of that, Recife (y Olinda), Salvador, Buzios, RIO DE JANIERO, Florianopolis...just to name a few. You should also definately not miss out on the spectacular waterfalls of Iguazu.

Also, if you want to make Ushuaia, December is a much better idea, unless you have 4-wheel-drive on your bike.

Hi Paul,
Thanks for the news that the trouble is mostly on ruta 14.
I am definitely planning on Iguazu and I know what you mean about the Brazilian coast. I was lucky enough to spend some time in Florianopolis a few years back. It is a beautiful place.

It is just that I live on the beach here in Venezuela. I'm not sick of beach life... it is just that I've had a whole heck of a lot of it in the last 4 years and would like to be in the "highlands" for a while. Plus I think it will be quieter to go inland. I like quiet.

oh yea, I am coming back at Christmas to finish off the south.

Hi Susan, like others I had read about police corruption on ruta 14. I travelled it from BA to Iguazu in October last year and although over a 5 day period I was stopped twice each day, each time the police were polite and correct, not a hint of asking for bribes; however, I did have all the bike documentation including Argentinian insurance to hand so each stop lasted less than a couple of minutes. Give yourself a couple of days for the cateracts and the walks, they are all magnificent. Ride safe.

Thanks Mike. Good news.
Cheers

Just got an e-mail from Doug: http://dougsmotorcyclediary.com/

He is a great and trustworthy man, he visited Elisa and I here in Buenos Aires a week ago... His web site is worth a look and the true story (Project Catalyst) of how he became an international overlander like you is definately funny, insightful, and leaves one with feelings of courage and hope for the Human spirit.

Beach and great shrimp

Hi, I did the mountains all the way south through Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia and into Patagonia on my way south from Mexico to Ushuaia. I will be heading north in July (yes, I know - a really dumb month to collect a bike in Ushuaia but Old Men Can't Wait). I am considering taking the ferry north to Puerto Mont, then ride north up through Chile, across through Argentina to Paraguay and eastern Bolivia to visit the Jesuit missions, cross into Brazil to the coast and ride north to Belem, catch a boat up river to Manaus to show my Honda 125 its birthplace, then on through Boa Vista to Santa Elena and Venzuelan coast to Cartagena to find a yacht north to Panama.
Brazil frightens me. I am 74 and had a frightening time in Colon, Panama. How are the Brazilian and Venzuelan coasts? Dangerous? What should I avoid?
Thanks, simon:scooter:
