Leaving your car in Kyrgyzstan or Mongolia for a few months?

Hi there,

We are two travelers wanting to drive overland from Europe to Mongolia, but we also absolutely want to see China. Since it is nearly impossible to get a Chinese driver's license, we want to travel a few months (2-3) through China via train and bus. We are now looking for a way to store our car in one of the bordering countries, and then get it on our way back there.
Ideally, this should be Kyrgyzstan, since it would fit best into our schedule and since it's visa-free, but Mongolia could work as well.

Our questions are: Can you easily do that? What about entering the country with a car and leaving it without, do we have to declare that somewhere? And would you by any chance even have an address we could contact in Kyrgyzstan/Mongolia (that would be awesome)?

Thanks a lot!

Similar, motorcycle

Hi.

Sorry, gemaze, I would open a new post asking about the same subject.

What are the chances of leaving a motorcycle in Mongolia for a year? I'm thinking of traveling there this summer, and leave the bike there until summer 2016 is one of the options ...

Same questions...:mchappy:

Regards!

Kyrgyzstan is pretty easy to leave a bike in. No issues. There are lots of posts on this. I left mine with Patrick at Muztoo. Message him, he can help. Hopefully the laws are still the same.

Several people have also left their bikes at Oasis in Ulan Baator. A search on this forum should find the threads.

Thank you for the info, motoreiter

I should add that IIRC there is some customs paperwork involved, and that Oasis has changed ownership in the last couple of years, so you should definitely contact them to find out if that service is still available rather than just showing up and hoping to leave the bike with them.

I left my motorbike in East Ukraine, Russia, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan & Tajikistan with people i meet on my bike trip in 2013/14 for 1-3 weeks at a time . Dont get to caught up in thinking you should leave it where everyone else leaves there bike

I think most people in any village, town or city would let you leave your motorbike with them if you asked. I did and when i returned i was always greeted with washed motorbike cloths that i left with the bike, food and even my bike filled up with fuel when i returned :thumbup1:

However as Russia, Kazakhstan & Kyrgyzstan (Kyrgyzstan joined jan 2015) along with Belarus are all customs union country's if you leave your bike to long in these areas you will have problems, so really i would try avoid that because if you don't come back in the set time you are looking at a ban on visiting these areas

For Central Asia Russia Far East way for long term storage i think it would be Mongolia or worse case Tajikistan, however your bike in Tajikistan should really only stay in the country as long as your visa states and if they wanted they could fine you if you left it say for 6 months and came back and rode it out and they checked the customs form to your visa form

Is Kyrgyzstan in custom union, too? I though only Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan....

motoreiter 3 May 2015 21:48

As Wesley says, Kyrgyzstan was supposed to join in Jan 2015; I've not research ed/heard yet if it actually has, but my understanding is that is was a done deal.

Only a posibility, but the idea would be to leave the bike in Mongolia in late August, and return to continue traveling in 2016 summer...

You can also add Armenia to that list, give it a few years and Tajikistan will be in as well i would guess

No response from Oasis at the moment.

I have sent an email to Mongolian Embassy in Spain, asking info about the posibility and paperwork about leaving the bike in the country for a year.

I hope to tell you soon.:thumbup1:

:oops2:....and so fast....from the consulate, they tell me that by law it's no posible to leave the bike there. Only a short time...:(

Hi everyone,

I'm in the same situation. Traveling east from Portugal, I am currently in Iran and taking my time, so I was looking for a place to leave my bike for six months, possibly Kyrgyzstan, spend winter in India, and then next year get it back and travel to Eastern Russia and Mongolia, when the weather is better.

Unfortunately because of the ridiculous bureaucracy/price in China this seems to be my only option.

I'll start making some enquiries and in the meantime I'll keep an eye on this post and see if any of you guys come up with a solution.

Cheers
