Greetings, I stumbled upon this tread via a google search "best months to ride the trans siberian highway on a motorcycle". I'm planning on riding from
Vlad to London on my own next summer and if anyone is interested in joining up I'm all for it.

Hey guys, I'm hoping to ride my scooter and sidecar from Magadan to China or Central Asia in October this year. Can anyone tell me what kind of temperatures and road conditions to expect and any good suggestions for cold weather kit? We've currently driven the rig from London to South Africa and are on our way North from Santiago at the moment, currently in peru.

Riding now.

I am on a ride now from Vlad to Moscow currently in Krasnoyarsk. . Sailed the DBS ferry from Japan and docked June 11th. No issues with payment in yen, usd or rubels. Got local sim from MTC and hooked up with local bikers who shared knowledge and contacts.
Apart from a few rainy days the weather has been great. Warm and no hint of frost. There are flys and mosquitoes but I chose not to camp for this reason. Accommodation is cheap and plentiful starting at 500 rubuls for shared room at truck stop to 2000 for private room in hostel or home stay.
If anybody would like any latest info on road conditions, where I stayed or other advice let me know.

This was the Kolyma Highway in early October 2017. On the 2nd October we had a cold snap driving up towards Yakutsk; -20º C and ca. 15 cm of snow.

Over the next few days the temperature hovered in daytime between -5 and -15º C. Coldest we felt was -23º C one morning in Butugychag. Crossing the passes on the Tenkin Highway and the last section of the Kolyma Highway approaching Magadan, there was a lot of snow on the passes and there were plenty of spun-off cars (people not prepared for the sudden snow) approaching the city.

You'll need decent winter tyres and very, very warm gear out on a sidecar.

Of course, you could turn it into a proper winter trip if you fancy, and do it in February:

You can read a brief trip report here: http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...n-kolyma-95144

Good luck!

i'm planning similar route for 2019, just a really lame question. Where/how do I find "2000 for private room in hostel or home stay"? As i can't read/speak russian. And, I guess conventional online booking websites has no info for remote area like that. Thanks!

Many thanks! Especially for the second link. A bike with range of 400km should do? Or need to carry spare in Siberia?

Hi cheriemrrr,

Are you still doing the trip next year? I'm doing the same route and shipping the bike from Australia to Vladivostok and start from there around the 20th of May 2016. If you want to join let us know :thumbup1:

G'day Mario,
We are looking to ship 3 bikes from Sydney to Vladivostok for next years northern summer. It would suit us to arrive in Vlad around 20th May. We will use Yuri to clear our bikes. I've used him before and he is excellent. Last time (2010) we took 8 bikes in a 20' container. It wasn't to expensive. It would be fantastic if we could get a full container again. I think we left Vlad around 2nd June last time, the weather was great. We arrived in Vlad from Moscow around the end of August in 2008, the weather was also spectacular. Unfortunately, we will have to live with the bloody mosquitoes.
Regards,
Chris. :funmeteryes::scooter:

You will regret camping with all those mosquitoes.

We loved driving from Ulan Ude to Vladivostok (yes, in our campervan) end of September, beginning of October. No mosquitoes unlike earlier, and really beautifull autumn colors endlessly.

However, it is a tight window as mentioned before, as other people came 2 weeks later, saw mostly dead trees, and got a bit of snow (not too much). But yeah, that was second half of October, so that is to be expected.
