Best time period for riding from Vladivostok to Moscow
Hullo all,
I am planning a trans-siberia ride next year on a DR650, from Vladivostok to Europe via Moscow. For those who throttled down this route before, what is the best time frame to do this? I've heard about the terrible mosquito swarms of summer, and the also insane cold of winter. Appreciate any advice, thanks! |
you are wearing the mosquitoes. Nothing you can do about that.
Mid May to End September is a broad brush view for the Trans Siberian motorway being comfortably motorcyclable |

Are you still doing the trip next year? I'm doing the same route and shipping the bike from Australia to Vladivostok and start from there around the 20th of May 2016. If you want to join let us know :thumbup1: Mario :scooter: |
I would recommend late summer / autumn as the mosquitoes have gone, and the real cold is still a little way off. It's a fairly brief window, but going west extends it somewhat. I would aim for September.

I really don't think the mosquitos are that big of a deal and would much rather deal with them than the potential cold weather in September.

I was in Eastern Siberia in mid September to early October, camping with friends. We had no winter gear but always made large fires in the evenings and were never cold. Nights were about -10ºC and there was some snow later on, but the days were perfect with mostly clear bluie skies, some of my very favourite travel memories. There were no mosquitoes. This year I drove across Russia south to north (Dagestan to the Barents Sea) and there was not a single day where I could sleep outside as the mosquitoes were unbearable. Even if you don't care about getting bitten (they don't carry any diseases after all), the noise and the fact that they fly into your eyes and face all the time, meaning you need to wear a headnet, is infuriating, and was the only downer on an otherwise perfect trip. I did some trekking in the North Urals and was bitten 50+ times through two layers of clothing. There is also the possibility of contracting Lymes disease or tick-borne encephalitis from ticks. Wearing 50%+ DEET works well, but it's not the nicest stuff to smear on yourself, and you need to keep re-applying if you sweat or swim. Next year I'm driving to Magadan in September / October. I would say that I am driving a car, so once on the move cold is not an issue, but surely you can get decent riding gear. Also, autumn in Siberia can be quite fickle and unstable. But anything is better than the constant, infuriation of those damn mosquitoes. Just my opinion... EO |
Hi!,
Im doing the reverse; from West to East next year (2016). Good to know what to expect either the mosquitos or cold. Its a personal choice. I am planning to start from Holland (where my bike is parked now) somewhere in July towards Moscow then all the way to Vladivostok with a short diversion into Mongolia. Anyone care to team up? Im riding a 2008 KLR650. Amzah ?c? |
Yes, its a personal choice, but I'd like to mention two other things so that people can make the correct choice for themselves:
1) it sound like eurasiaoverland camps a lot, in which case, sure, you'd have more exposure to mosquitoes. I rarely camp and personally haven't had any big issues with mosquitoes even when I did camp. 2) it sounds like eurasiaoverland was in a car, not a bike, so cold is less of an issue. while you can dress up against cold to some extent, personally i dont want to ride if there is any real threat of snow/ice on the road, as there would be in Siberia in October (if not earlier). |

I thought camping was 75% of the fun of crossing Siberia :D Quote:
Don't leave the trip to Mongolia too late; that is one place where you really don't want to suddenly get snowed in... all the tracks completely disappear! |

Once you're into October I think it gets much more dicey; while this is an unusual snowfall, this year Omsk got 40 cm of snow overnight on Oct 22: https://www.rt.com/news/319351-siber...l-omsk-record/ Obviously, on a moto even if it were 5cm instead of 40, you could have a problem. Anyway, best of luck. |
russia riding in april-may
hello bikers..i am planning a vlad-moscow ride in 2017. this starts from april 15th thru 30 days....i will not be camping, but couchsurfing. will the road be ice-free? the internet says that it will be approx 10 degrees centi throughout maximum. hopefully i will be sleeping in the minimum temparature period. there will be a windchill factor too. so i need some advice on april/may riding in Russia from Vlad thru Moscow. Thanx

It can definitely snow out there in April, so you should always be prepared for cold weather and be ready to wait out bad weather for a couple days if necessary.

Greetings, I stumbled upon this tread via a google search "best months to ride the trans siberian highway on a motorcycle". I'm planning on riding from
Vlad to London on my own next summer and if anyone is interested in joining up I'm all for it. Marty |

Hey guys, I'm hoping to ride my scooter and sidecar from Magadan to China or Central Asia in October this year. Can anyone tell me what kind of temperatures and road conditions to expect and any good suggestions for cold weather kit? We've currently driven the rig from London to South Africa and are on our way North from Santiago at the moment, currently in peru.

Riding now.
I am on a ride now from Vlad to Moscow currently in Krasnoyarsk. . Sailed the DBS ferry from Japan and docked June 11th. No issues with payment in yen, usd or rubels. Got local sim from MTC and hooked up with local bikers who shared knowledge and contacts.
Apart from a few rainy days the weather has been great. Warm and no hint of frost. There are flys and mosquitoes but I chose not to camp for this reason. Accommodation is cheap and plentiful starting at 500 rubuls for shared room at truck stop to 2000 for private room in hostel or home stay. If anybody would like any latest info on road conditions, where I stayed or other advice let me know. |

https://i.imgur.com/jIf2AeC.jpg Over the next few days the temperature hovered in daytime between -5 and -15º C. Coldest we felt was -23º C one morning in Butugychag. Crossing the passes on the Tenkin Highway and the last section of the Kolyma Highway approaching Magadan, there was a lot of snow on the passes and there were plenty of spun-off cars (people not prepared for the sudden snow) approaching the city. You'll need decent winter tyres and very, very warm gear out on a sidecar. Of course, you could turn it into a proper winter trip if you fancy, and do it in February: https://i.imgur.com/ajNLZ5z.jpg You can read a brief trip report here: http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...n-kolyma-95144 Good luck! Vladivostok May 2020
Quote:
We are looking to ship 3 bikes from Sydney to Vladivostok for next years northern summer. It would suit us to arrive in Vlad around 20th May. We will use Yuri to clear our bikes. I've used him before and he is excellent. Last time (2010) we took 8 bikes in a 20' container. It wasn't to expensive. It would be fantastic if we could get a full container again. I think we left Vlad around 2nd June last time, the weather was great. We arrived in Vlad from Moscow around the end of August in 2008, the weather was also spectacular. Unfortunately, we will have to live with the bloody mosquitoes. Regards, Chris. :funmeteryes::scooter: |
You will regret camping with all those mosquitoes.
We loved driving from Ulan Ude to Vladivostok (yes, in our campervan) end of September, beginning of October. No mosquitoes unlike earlier, and really beautifull autumn colors endlessly. However, it is a tight window as mentioned before, as other people came 2 weeks later, saw mostly dead trees, and got a bit of snow (not too much). But yeah, that was second half of October, so that is to be expected. |
