Mauritanian visa at the border?

Hello,

Does anyone know if you can get a mauritanian visum at the border with morocco, or do you have to go to casablanca to get one?

What is the cheapest?

Keep on trippin'

I got one at the border back in September OK, although I think it's more expensive that way - I can't remeber how much though, although I do remember paying in Euros.

Latest update on the Atlantic page says it can't be done - get it at Casa, its cheaper and guaranteed.

Hello Dries,

as you live in Belgium : get your visum in Belgium. We did it a few months ago without any problem. I can give you the info you need. Send me an email.

Greetz,

Karel

Somebody we were travelling with (Pete M) decided to give it a try about two weeks ago and got through with a south African passport and about 60 Euros, but like the man says, why take the risk - once you are there they can ask what they want...

Dries,

My friend and Honda dealer Raf Demaret has done a trip to Dakar in last December. He should know quite well how it goes these days around. I think I understood you don't need a real visa or something. You can buy some sort of 'document de passage'.

Since we both live in Belgium drop me a mail and I'll mail the phone number of Raf.

Pieter.

I think you confusing the visa with the carnet de passage, which you do not need for RIM as they issue their own temporary import document

fireboomer 19 Jan 2003 21:21

I am pretty sure it goes for both the documents. For the carnet the passage I am 100% sure that you can buy a 'cheap(er)' temporary document at the border. Lots cheaper and easier then a carnet for sure.
As for the pasport I think he just showed up at the border.
If you want to get a visum I heard that you could also get it in Rabat.

karellevrau 20 Jan 2003 14:20

Yes, is correct,

no carnet needed for Mauri, some other paper, declaration de honour ; about 10 € ; to be bought at the border.
Visum is needed however. I'm quite sure not possible at the border.

Thanks for all the advise,

I the meanwhile I have got my visum (3 months, multiple entry).

I got it from the embassy in brussels.
Normally they require a carnet de passage or an airplane ticket.

I didn't had any of those, but someone told me I could try it with a declaration that said that my tickets were ordered.
I didn't found a travel agency who was willing to give me such a paper, so I made my own declaration.

And the trick worked,
thanks for the tip karellevrau.

No problem bro,

that's what the forum is for.

fireboomer 22 Jan 2003 03:17

Ok, got info back from my friend who went to Mauritania last December.
His exact words (translated):

"Visum and 'document de passage' was bought at the border for 50 Euro's at the moment of entry.
You could also get in Casablance at the embassy for 10 Euro's without a problem.
Do keep in mind that in the last case you'll have to wait a day. That's dropping of the docs early morning and picking them up again the next day 1600h. We couldn't do this because we arrived on a friday afternoon in Casa and this is seen as weekend. We couldn't wait till monday.

For the bike you just need to sign a document in wich you 'honourfully state' that you will not sell the bike and thus export it again."

Voila, hope this helps.

Just got back from a trip round RIM and back and can confirm most of the above

Visa's issued in Cassa cost 100 drm, valid for 30 days from the date of issue and single entry. visa extensions are avalible in Nouadhibou but will not give you multiple entry.

Visa's issued at the boarder cost 60 EU to some Belguim guys but I think the "price" is negotiable.

The vehical "declaration de honour" from customs at the boarder (the 2 nd hut next to the broken caravan) costs 10 EU (they did ask for a carnet but I just laughed and waited a bit longer)

The office guy at the RIM consulate seemed to be very interested in cars going to Senegal for re-sale and refused a French guy a visa on these grounds so if thats your plan i'd make up a nice story about a grand tour of the sights of Mautritania!

Hi,

Yesterday at the border between Dakhla and Nouadhibou, they told us we could have bought it there easily. But it is more expensive. I think he said 50 euros.
We had bought it easily in Bruxelles for I think 30 euros.
