Sturgis Motorcycle event

Anybody interested in going to Sturgis this year, im likly going to it this year and would like to join some other riders or find someone to go with. Let me know! For those of you who dont know what sturgis is its a week long motorcycle party and about a half milion bikers show up.

LuckyStriker 26 Feb 2005 13:55

Stupid question but here goes…

Are non-Harley riders welcome? The Sturgis is a very famous rally and I’ve been planning to check it out for some time now. But whenever I see pictures I only see thousand upon thousands of Harleys and not a single Japanese superbike or German tourer…

Will I be tarred and feathered and run out of town if I turn up on my BMW R1200GS?

chris 26 Feb 2005 19:39

Was there on a scabby Beemer in 2000 and found everybody is welcome. But don't expect to be noticed, even on an exotic bike with an exotic plate. Everybody is busy posing, being cool and looking at themselves in their own mirror, IMHO.

I was at Sturgis in 2003 on a Kawasaki Ninja 500 and I really enjoyed it. Everyone was super friendly and I even got free beers for "having the balls to come on that thing". What makes it really worthwhile are the free outdoor concerts. Some of the bands that play are big ticket items. South Dakota is fantastic riding country and you can find riding to suit any style you want. Sturgis lies just between the Black Hills and the Badlands so there's lots of variety.

To answer your questions LuckyStriker, though I can't remember seeing any GS's, there were a LOT of Honda Goldwings, so while the vast marjority are on Harleys (trailered or not), there are other bikes out there.

As for being foreign, well I'm technically foreign, but I don't have an accent so that doesn't count, but perhaps the most visible foreigner group I saw at Sturgis was a group of 5 French bikers who had shipped their bikes and were doing a tour of the States. They had French stickers and big French flags and this was right in the middle of the "anti-French" sentiment in the States over France's Iraq position. Not only did they not get hassled, but I think they scored more free beers than I did!

Hello, I would be interested in meeting up with anyone going to sturgis or prearranging a time /place in sturgis to say hello. I first went to sturgis in 1969 and have been checking in every few years ever since. Where else can you ride on roads for miles and miles and have bikes outnumber cars? There is something of interest for almost anyone. There is the party/beer thing but I go to look at the bike stuff and crazy people and ride the interesting area. Also to eat breakfast in the church basement where the gray haired grannys serve breakfast to a bunch of tatooed biker dudes and dudettes.

I was riding my ST1100 through Wyoming on the way to Kansas two years ago, just a few days before the Sturgis weekend. Got pulled over for speeding (87 in a 70) and fined $200 by a state trooper.

Was talking to him afterwards, over a coffee (we had to go into town so I could get the money out of an ATM, I had out of country plates on the bike) and he asked why I was going to Sturgis. I told him I was going to Kansas and wanted to keep as far away from Sturgis as I possibly could. He was very surprised, and apologized profusely for giving me the ticket - told me he never would have done that except that he figured I was one of those "Sturgis troublemakers".

For what it's worth.

I cant really say much about the event and how non harley riders are treated because i havnt been yet. However most people that go to sturgis have one thing in common, they know motorcycling is not about what kind of bike you drive, its about the freedom of the road, or no road in some cases. So my answer to you luckystriker is to have no worrys about that. So if your interested in going to sturgis mail me.

Thanks all!

I think I'll go, but not this year...

'hope to get there within the next 10 years.
No rush - it seems the sturgis will continue for the forseeable future

Sturgis South Dakota. 10AM on monday the 8th of August. Meet at the base of the photo tower on main street. That is the place you can contribute a few bucks to climb up and get a photo of a few of the thousands of bikes parked on main street. Check out the sturgis web site for info. Sturgis is kind of like strange cities, lots of opinions but till you have been there you don't know what you will find.

I live about 200 miles from Sturgis, try to go every year. Not sure what work will be doing at that time, but if anyone is interested in going through the Big Horn Mountains, or any of the other areas near Sheridan, let me know and we can get together. I would like to meet others that travel alot on a bike.

I went to Sturgis in 04 and 03. It was great. Just get a beer and hot dog and sit by the road to watch all of the bikes go by. Seemed like milllions. Saw all kind of bikes. Even saw a John Deere (tractor manufacturer) trike ridden by an old farmer. I am from South Dakota and the riding is great. Rode through the big horn mountains on the way and they were beautiful. May go this year if I have time. I am a solo rider so I may see you there among the 500K other riders!

Lookin' for riders for Sturgis...

Hey HUBB guys and gals:

Well I was going to hit up Sturgis, and now have found most of my friends are either stuck at work or backing out. I'm looking for some people to tag with. I've never been to Sturgis and wasn't exactly sure if I should be going solo.

I'm in the Minot, North Dakota area. Drop me a line if you are looking for people too, or if you've got an extra slot for another rider. Much thanks!

Sturgis Motorcycle event

I was in the village in September 1992,one month after the Rally, and the village is just dead. There even was a dog sleeping in the middle of Mainstreet, nothing to see. The day before I stayed on a camping is Spearfish(60 Miles north of Sturgis) and the lady from the campground said that, if it,s the Surgis Rally all campnigs in a circle of 100 Miles around Sturgis are fully booked. In 2003 I was again in the USA but, no, not been to the Surgis Rally. For me it,s to big.
I,ve been a few times(from 1998 till 2006) to the European bike week at the Faakersee in Austria, and that,s,I think almost the same,150.000 bikers together for a week.
So Long.
Chris.
