Morocco Route & Paperwork Advice Pls?

Back in Oct 2007 the wife and I did a 2.5 week trip two up on a '88 BMW R100GS and are looking to go back this Sept (this time in a '96 Land Rover Discovery as we now have a little one) but cannot remember what paperwork we needed/ took etc. have looked at these two very helpful two links:

But just want to confirm:

1) Carnet - not required;

2) Insurance - understand it may be possible to extend my European insurance cover but if not possible we will have to buy once over. Back in 2007 I recall spending hrs outside a tiny office in the port of Matilla/ Nadar (having crossed from Almeria) and can only think that's what we were doing. May cross to either Ceuta or Tanger this time - does anybody know if there similar facilities at these ports or indeed if the same office/facilites are in Matilla/Nadar?

Also any info on price would be helpful - by the time we have actually got to Morocco (and allowing for getting back) can't see us getting more than 15 days over there.

3) Breakdown cover - is it possible to get European break down cover extended for Morocco?

The car insurance is up for renewal soon so depending on the answers to the above it would make sense to take this into account.

Last time (in approx 10 days) did a loop that started in Nadar headed south, then down the Todra gorge (entered from eastern side of mountains) , Erg Chebbi, Zagora, Quarzazate, Marrakech and back via Ceuta and loved it (though found there was a lot of driving involved and it was all a bit speedy i.e. we didn't have time to stop and take it all in).

This time as we have our young daughter with us we are not so keen on driving quite so much and are struggling re: a decent route i.e. do we do the same but slower; some of the same e.g. Todra Gorge route but slower and some new parts; or stay in the north and maybe stick to the mountains; or do we concentrate on the coast?

Ideally would like to get a bit of everything in i.e. a bit of desert/ gravel roads/ mountains & beach but not sure how realistic that is?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

From my experience last year, it is not possible to get breakdown cover for Morocco - for one thing there is no AA equivalent to come rescue you anyway.

Insurance seems to be pot luck, some firms will cover you, others won't. It is possible to get it once in country, though be prepared to wait at least 24 hours for cover and pay through the nose!

And no, a carnet is not required. You fill in paprework to 'import' the vehicle, and then 'export' it again when you leave.

For Brits breakdown cover is a hard one. Continentals have less hassle but I was told in the UK Comfort motorhome insurance cover cars too so may be worthwhile asking and renewing with them.

If you breakdown don't panic into a costly recovery or you may get shafted - someone will help you in the end.

In Morocco I've never had to pay exorbitant rates or wait for cover any longer than it takes to find an office and get it written out. This can mean briefly driving uninsured out of some ports. See the other insurance thread. The frontier insurance rates are set - 876dh/month for example - or about £2 a day.
