HU meet in Mexico?

Grant,

I was reading on the "other" motorcycle site where some guys in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, are looking to start a rally there. Might be a chance to partner with someone local to get HU Traveller's Meets back in Mexico.

Worth a look:

In the same vein, are there any plans to go back to Creel?

garrydymond 9 Mar 2008 06:07

Let's get a meeting in San Miguel it is a great place and a little further into Mexico so would make a better "adventure" for most people plus closer to home for me. I'll be in San Tonio next week any must sees?

Garry,

You have a PM.

I'll have to take that silence as a no. :(

Andy - I guess there were a couple hiccups the last two meetings. In 2005 Grant and HU attendees got the shaft and the location was moved at the last minute by the hotel for one of the seminar days. And the last meeting I guess a group got lost in the wilderness.

But SMdA or even Zacatecas would be a great place for a meeting. Even Loreto in Baja!

You've been on the road too long, Allan, you're getting dates all mixed up :) You and I, and Grant and Julie (the Ozzies) were there in '05, and things went great. As you know, I missed the '06 meet, due to being in South America. I don't know if I should admit this, but I know the guy who got lost in '06. He is 82 years old and lives in Kerrville Texas. I hope I am still riding at that age, but I also hope I know my limits and don't inconvenience quite so many people.

I am following your trip, looks like you are having a great time. Al least your last get off wasn't as bad as Bolivia. Buen viaje, or whatever they say in Africa.

ahhh. yes. i know him too! He was my roommate in 2005!!! And I hope to be riding at his age too! He's a pilot too! Good god!

Yeah. The last off was an ouch but I'm moving on...

Hope to see YOU on the road sometime again soon!

smiles,

allan

garrydymond, AndyT, WorldRider,

How bout putting something together and presenting it to Grant. Scout out a place with facilities to handle a meet and a local organizer (garrydymond??) to set it all up. Don't speak Spanish but I would be glad to help out any way I could. I miss the Mexico meet and would love to see it back -- The Copper Canyon was nice but a new area would be a bonus.

Lone Rider 13 Apr 2008 02:46

The further south a rally is, the fewer the number of 'Mericans you'll have in attendance.
I really don't know how you can pick a better location than Copper Canyon.

Do CC, as it's obvious...

garrydymond 13 Apr 2008 02:52

CC does seem like a good option I went 2 years 2005 and 2006. The second location was a real mess I would say go back to Villa Mexicana. How many people are interested in a meeting for 2009? Hopefully Leroy (the guy that got lost would be able to make it)

Actually it's "I didn't see the post!" :(

However at the moment there are no plans anyway, so yeah you were right anyway but for the wrong reason :) Warped enough ;)

Let me be perfectly clear - I'd LOVE to go back to Mexico, in Creel - or San Miguel de Allende, or anywhere suitable - but SOMEONE needs to step up and sort it locally, it's too hard to do it remotely - I've tried, and it's just not on.

So, volunteers? Garry ;)

Anyone?

See "how to host a meeting" for all the nitty gritty, but most of you know what's involved. I'm happy to make it worth someones while - to a point! But I also have to be confident they can do it right.

Re the "other" guys - doesn't look like they got far, thread seems to have died.

Having run meetings since 2001 now, and all over the world, I can say it's a fair bit of work - but not impossible, we give a lot of help and guidance, so two or three guys can do it EASY. One person can do a very small meeting, 30 people or so, but any larger and it goes a lot easier with more help.

Let's make it happen! :funmeteryes:

I think the issue with Copper Canyon now is the rally Gerrardo Ibarra is doing in the fall. I went to the area in '07, but didn't really get to the rally proper, just stopped in to check out the scene on the last day. I don't know if a "reunification" is even an option.

The thing I like about the HU meets the most is the presentations by other travelers. Never fails to get me pumped up to plan my next trip. This seems to be lacking at the Chabochis rally, so it seems like an obvious marriage to me, but that is from the outside, and just what I want to get out of a meeting.

If an HU meet in Mexico needs to be seperate from the Ibarra rally, I think it either needs to be in a different location, or in the spring of the year. San Miguel sounds like a great place to me, but being that far in to Mexico, it could cut down attendance by Americans. It might pick up that many or more from el D.F. , so maybe it balances out. I'm not in a position to be the lead guy, but would help however I could from here in San Antonio, and show up early/stay late, whatever.

Would a second meet in Creel water down attendance too much? Hard to say. I prefer small gatherings anyway, so maybe that wouldn't be a bad thing.

I prefer 'smaller', too, but Grant needs enough to at least cover expenses. CC in Spring would be nice.

I can't help but think Mulege in Baja would make a nice location.
Small town, Baja allure, Bahia de Concepcion, proximity to SoCal, Santa Rosalia ferry, dirt galore with easy access for street bike...and some other stuff.

Hotel Serenidad and their restaurant could host the meetings, but wouldn't it be nice to have them at night in the Hacienda's courtyard?

Grant Johnson 29 Apr 2008 18:31

Yep, I do need to cover expenses at least! A few dollars to pay for food helps too. My stomach is funny that way :( (Remember HU is my paycheque, it's FULL time and the meetings are supposed to help pay for the site and my time. Sucks, but there you go)

IS Gerardo doing a CC event this year? After last year I thought he might not do it again.

Mulege - nice town - would be interested indeed.

CC in spring - any suggestions on a good date? When's the weather best?

See the meetings schedule for potential open dates - some shuffling for next year is possible but we try to keep them close to the same dates..

Any and all input is much appreciated, thanks.

Lone Rider 29 Apr 2008 20:17

The Chabochis Rally at Creel will again be held in Oct but dates haven't been set yet. Prob will be 4th week, but that's just a guess. The large CH bicycle event runs into the early part of the third week.

March/April would be good for Copper Canyon with April having less chances of a freak winter storm and better weather in the States. Easter '09 is April 12th. I don't know what Easter activity is like in CC.

Baja Sur is one of the few places in/near the States where a winter event could be held, but you should consider what the riding weather would be like where the people originate from. Thanksgiving '09 is Nov 27th.
