Baja is a bit of a stretch for us east coasters. How bout something a little more centered, like maybe the Gulf coast of Mexico?

Too many good places are a long ways from NC and I hear your pain. :)
I lived in NC for many years. Great state, btw.

Mulege is 400 miles (one day) further from Asheville than Creel, if using the Guaymas/Sta Rosalia ferry.
Interesting MX gulf coast areas (inland from Tampico) will be the same and possibly a greater distance than Creel.

Mexico Meeting

Although I can't volunteer now, I was just going to suggest Galeana (south of Monterrey). It'a nice town up in the mountains at about 5000 feet. It has one paved road into town and one gravel road. The gravel road gives you nice access to a lot of mountain riding. It is centrally located and very inexpensive. The area between the two hotels and the Plaza would make a nice spot for night presentations. Just a thought. (I know Leroy too. He's a real nice guy and I hate that there was some confusion in Creel).

I prefer 'smaller', too, but Grant needs enough to at least cover expenses. CC in Spring would be nice.

I can't help but think Mulege in Baja would make a nice location.
Small town, Baja allure, Bahia de Concepcion, proximity to SoCal, Santa Rosalia ferry, dirt galore with easy access for street bike...and some other stuff.

Hotel Serenidad and their restaurant could host the meetings, but wouldn't it be nice to have them at night in the Hacienda's courtyard?
