ROAD CONDITIONS REPORT PLEASE READ
For those of you planning on slabing it through Chihuahua City, down through Cuahutemoc, La Junta, San Pedro, San Juanito, to Creel....

Major roadwork going on, as local public works force strives to turn this highway into a 4 lane deal.

DO NOT ride at night.
Mind the workers and heavy machinery.
Watch out for gravel on a few sections
Expect traffic delays and most importantly, drivers invading your lane.
Remember this is Mexico, and everything goes. http://s3.amazonaws.com/advrider/deal.gif

ALTERNATE ROUTES:
If you are coming from the East (Presido-Ojinaga)
Unfortuantely, there aren't many, bust out your atlas and you'll see what I mean, unless you want to hit the dirt. If so, soon after exiting Chihuahua city, you can hang a left towards Carichi, and cut across a dirt road, straight through Chomachi, Sisoguichi and on to Bocoyna, turn left on the pavement, and head down to Creel.

If you are coming from the North (El Paso) or the West (Palomas, Douglas etc) Simply avoid heading towards Chihuahua, and come down through Nuevo Casas Grandes, Buenaventura, Gomez Farias, Temosachi, Guerrero, San Pedro, San Juanito on to Creel.

Ride safe, see you all in Creel.http://s3.amazonaws.com/advrider/icon10.gif

Hola Ibarra:
The alternate dirt route you describe beginning west of Chihuahua sounds/looks interesting (better than getting stuck in construction). Anything a Mexican noob should know about traversing those kinds of roads? Are they well signed? Thanks!

Also, anyone wanting to hook up for the ride from Presidio on or about Oct. 8/9 drop me a line at rpwhitby@mindspring.com:biggrin:

Leaving from Davis, CA 10/4

Oops. I somehow managed to post this on a thread that's two years old. Here it is again, hopefully in the right place:

I'm leaving from Davis, CA on 10/4. Going to Douglas for the 10/7 crossing for the Huachinera fiesta and then on to Creel.

I believe another fellow from Friday Harbor, WA will be coming along as well.

email jerrykap@pacbell.net if this helps.

I did the Copper Canyon HU meeting in `04 and had a blast.

C-ya, Jerry

Bike temp import permit

Does anyone know how much this would be for a '06 R1200 GSA? I am talking out of pocket, not the credit card guarantee.

Thanks

slight change in plans...the border crossing facility at Naco doesn't open until 8:00 a.m., the bcf at Douglas/Agua Prieta is open 24/7 (I've been told you can take care of all the paper work at either crossing). We will be at the Douglas crossing at 7:30 a.m., Sunday 8th if anybody cares to join us. See ya in Creel !!!

It's about $30. If you don't turn in the import permit when you leave, the CC gets dinged for the tax of about $400.

The another appx $22 for the Tourist Visa.

Get both for 180 days irregardless. It doesn't cost any more and you never know. Net is about $52+/-

See y'all down there.

Lodging Reservations??

Yes, I would be interested in the photo session, but I'm more concerned with figuring out how to make reservations for (1st choice) a private single room or cabin (shared if necessary).

UPDATE ON RESERVATIONS FOR ALL

As usual, things in Mexico don't go quite according to plan. :taz: It will be next week - Sept 27-ish - before we have the exact numbers of beds left available. Many rooms/beds are already filled, it's looking like we will have a lot of people coming down for the meeting!

If you want a room, assume there are no private ones left. If you're ok to share, I believe there is no problem at this time. Send me an email via the feedback form:
http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/form/feedback.php

and let me know the dates you want and if sharing is ok.

First come first served. IF we fill up - don't worry, there are loads of beds available in Creel, you WILL have a bed.

We will let all who reserved know their reservation is ok mid-next week or sooner.

Note I'll be there a few days early, also several days after the meeting, so I can get a chance to go for a ride if anyone wants to join me for a ride :scooter: (after the meeting.)

See you there! :D

Hayduke 20 Sep 2006 22:32

Woohoo!

Can't wait to see you all there!

TSbiker 23 Sep 2006 11:13

Hi Gerry

Hi Gerry,

It's me, the guys with Honda ST1100 from san Jose, who shared room with you back in 2004. As you told me then, "You will be back again with the dual sports bike". I finally found a 1989 Honda TransAlp few months ago and it is getting ready for this meeting in couple of weeks. This time, I will have to continue on to the dirt-road where the pavement ends on the way to the Batopilas. See you soon!
