California 2013 HU Travellers Meeting, October 24-27

California 2013 full details and Registration open now!

The event is in a fantastic location, the roads are legendary, and our venue is awesome, with a beautiful sunset view right over the Pacific just below us, and nestled in a pine forest. I can guarantee a great time! :mchappy:

Over the weekend last year we had around 30 presenters, names like Ted Simon, Greg Frazier, Craig Vetter, Carla King, Nicole Espinosa and many more putting on almost 40 shows! Check out the range of topics to come in 2013 here. More are being added all the time!

We are also now accepting applications from presenters for putting on a talk or demo or tech session, and it can be on any bike related travelling topic. To help with planning the event we need your application forms in early please!

For some more ideas on what YOU COULD present, see here.

We are also looking for volunteers as usual! We had a terrific crew last year, who did an absolutely amazing job. It takes help from volunteers to put on the meeting and this year we'll need a few more. When you register for the event you'll have an opportunity to volunteer, and we'd greatly appreciate it if you'd help out for just a few hours. It's a GREAT way to meet people too!

Thanks Randy, yes Wednesday is good, lots to do to make it all happen! Without the volunteers efforts, it wouldn't be possible to put these events on, thanks again!

See ya there,

Anyone know who nvman2200 is?

Hi all,
A traveler tried to get in touch with Camp Ocean Pines (voice mail), and left this email as contact - nvman2200 at yahoo dot com. The email address is not working. If this is you, or you know who it is, please try again.

Me and my wife are planning to attend the meet. We will be arriving Thursday noon and we also like to volunteer to help out for the event.

It will be our first time to join the HU gathering and hope to meet some South America experience travelers who can give us some guidelines and tips. We're dreaming to ride our bike from San Diego, CA via Peru sometimes in the near future.

Ride safe,
Gery & Coco

lizrdbrth 12 Sep 2013 07:37

Our first, too.

Wife may be even more into it than I am. lol.

We hope to be there in time to become indentured, as well.

I want to get on the plane right now! I'm really looking forward to coming across to Cambria. I've heard so much about the Meet over the past couple of years. I'm looking forward to the chance to link up with everyone and with the 40th anniversary of Ted's Jupiter's Travels ride happening - great stuff! See you in a few weeks! :thumbup1:

Place to work on your bike in San Francisco, near local shops

I'm a HU member, HU meeting attendee, and member of the Piston & Chain motorcycle club in San Francisco.

I know it's sometimes hard to find a place to work on your bike while traveling, so I wanted to offer up a place that could be convenient for riders coming to the 2013 HU California meeting via SF, either just before or after the event.

Piston & Chain is new this year. It's a workspace/club/shop/place to hang out in downtown San Francisco that's clean, well lit, and offers:

- 2 lifts
- tools
- a tire changing machine (manual, but still handy)
- oil
- oil and tire disposal
- some wearable gear (Rukka and a couple of other high-end brands)
- accessories
- also, couches, wi-fi, and access to downtown SF

There are several world-traveling members, and the vibe is completely compatible with what I've felt at previous HU meetings.

It's near the BMW dealer (BMW San Francisco), KTM dealer (Scuderia), Desmoto, Munroe Motors, Werkstatt, and other bike shops. You can usually get a ride/lift to any of these places from other members.

If you're on your way to HU California and need a place to work on your bike, you're welcome to come to P&C.

P&C normally charges a monthly membership but will offer the space for free for HU transients if you're only using the place for a day or two. Tire and oil disposal is a nominal charge. If you need to stay for 3 days or longer, they ask that you buy 1 month of membership ($59).

They'd also be glad to accept deliveries if you want to order ahead (let me/them know something's coming).

Web site: www.pistonandchain.com
Facebook: facebook.com/pistonandchain

Address: 1285 Folsom St, San Francisco, California 94103 (Google maps works, but the photos are old)

Drop me a line if you have further questions, or just contact P&C.

Welcome to San Francisco!

Daniel
P.S. I have no financial interest in P&C other than being a member and liking the place.

Sam Manicom 3 Oct 2013 10:23

I think that's an amazing offer! If I was on the road on two wheels this time around I'd be dropping in just to say hello! Line me up for a coffee next time would you. Looking forward to seeing you in Cambria anyway. :thumbup1:

Dr. Benny 3 Oct 2013 18:13

Woo Hoo! Looking forward to seeing everyone again in Cambria in just a few short weeks! :chug

I have some fun presentations planned that will surely bring some laughs
  • 2up Through Western Europe - The art of living off cheese and baguettes
  • I Wish I'd Known That! - Tips for traveling the Americas
  • Basic Spanish for Overlanding the Americas - Dos cervezas por favor. ¿Y dónde está el baño?

I'm really really really excited to be inspired by so many other awesome travelers as well!

Hi Grant and Susan!
I just signed up for the CA HU event and have added my name to the volunteer list and am super excited to attend having missing Nakusp this year.

Question for you, where is the best place to post a "bike storage" request? I will be riding out from New Mexico and with the intention of leaving my bike in California for the winter while I return to home to Vancouver. I was thinking in the 'regional' forum or here.. Let m know where to think the most effective place is.
Thanks!
Jen

good to hear you're going to make it to this one Jen,

Storage:
Regional forum, or the various Communities in the area- just write them directly, usually works out very well. See "Connect' on the menu! :)

Also of course talk to people at the event, but try the Communities first - you could meet the person you'll store the bike with in Cambria!

see you there!

Latest update:

We have 30 Presenters on the schedule, many doing more than one, so it's going to be a VERY FULL weekend! Get there early as we will try to run some twice, giving you a chance to see more.

Just received confirmation from Jeffery Polnaja from Indonesia, RideforPeace.com that he WILL be there with a terrific presentation on his travels, (we've seen it) a really inspiring journey.

And of course we have Sam Manicom all the way from England just for this event, Ted Simon for the 40th Anniversary of Jupiters Travels, Ken and Carol Duval from Australia, 6 years into their SECOND RTW, Jeremy Kroeker from Canada, always entertaining, Mike and Jo Hannan from Australia talking about how to do your European adventure, Dave Rankine on Alaska, Nicole Espinosa, Carla King, Walt Fulton and many many more!

With a list like that how can you not come?! :confused1:

And there's more, the list is a long one, so do check out the California information page and be sure to register SOON!

See you there!

KG6BWS 9 Oct 2013 01:18

Just went ahead and paid. See yall there!

Grant Johnson 9 Oct 2013 13:18

Update:

Craig Vetter recently had a hip replacement operation, and was still hoping to make it, but has been convinced by someone more sensible - his wife - that he shouldn't, so sadly he won't be there this year, but will be back next year.

Coach2Ride OffRoad Riding class - we've had scheduling problems, our snafu, and they can't make it, so it's cancelled.

Walt Fulton of Streetmasters and AMA racing fame will do a 1 hour Off-Road seminar. (no charge, part of the scheduled talks

Celebrating 40 Years of Jupiter's Travels

This time next week Sam Manicom and I will be somewhere over the Atlantic on our way to California :)

We're flying into San Francisco and will be touring around a bit during the days before and after the Cambria meeting. Sam has had the pleasure of visiting California before of course, but this will be the first time he's had the chance to share his passion for travelling in Africa with an audience in the US. I know he's really looking forward to it.

Unlike Sam I haven't been to the US before (I'm ashamed to say!), so I'm particularly excited about the trip and the long overdue opportunity to meet some of the people who've supported The Ted Simon Foundation over the past couple of years, including Carla King, Nicole Espinosa, Paul H Smith, Carl Parker and Jupiter's Travellers Sandy, Terry and Jack Borden.

Last Sunday, October 6th, was the 40th anniversary of the beginning of Ted Simon's original Jupiter's Travels journey and the Foundation is celebrating those 40 years of inspiration throughout October - with the Cambria meeting being the main focus.

Ted will be there to talk about his journeys and his new book Jupiter's Travels In Camera, and I'll be giving a Pecha Kucha presentation and Q&A about the purpose of the Foundation, our Jupiter's Travellers and how people can get involved.

Two weeks to go - see you all there! :)

Also looking forward to meet in personal. I've missed escorting you from Baja Mexico to US Border last weekend. Wish to hear more of your adventure ride stories this coming Cambria meet.

HU Travellers Meeting via Mexico

Hola Grant & Susan from Mazatlan!

At the August meeting in North Carolina I met Ralph from Alabama who told me he was going to the BMW Rally in Veracruz, Mexico in October. I joined him & another rider from Texas. After the rally they went returned home, but I continued west and today I'm crossing the Sea of Cortez today from Mazatlan. I hope to ride north through Baja California in time to attend the meeting in Cambria. I'll have fresh Mexico stories to share.

I look forward to seeing Wind Rider Jeffrey (Ride for Peace) and Doug Laird (also attended the Mexico Rally) again in Cambria.
I've been reading Jupiter's Travels on this trip & also look forward to meeting Ted Simon.

On site. There's a beautiful view of the ocean from the field where people camp.

rokklym 19 Oct 2013 14:48

Thanks! I'm really hoping I can make it. It will most likely be for Saturday only, but I'm going to try my best.

TimTyler 21 Oct 2013 19:59

Just wondering if there will be camping availability if I arrive on Thursday?

Is it too late to buy meal tickets?

chabon 22 Oct 2013 04:41

Any coming up through Santa Barbara from the south and want to team up let me know. Could also do Hwy 33, 166, etc.... Leaving Thursday morning. Been to Cambria last two years and its a great event!

KG6BWS 22 Oct 2013 12:54

My plan is to leave Santa Clarita early Thursday morning and be rolling thru Ojai and up the 33 by about 8am or so. If you go that way keep an eye out for a white Dakar with orange pelican boxes. Thatll be me.

Thinking for the fun of it 33, 166, Soda Lake road, 58, and into Paso Robles.

Edit - Scratch that. Fork seal blew out this morning. Going to get it fixed Thursday morning so wont be rolling until probably 9ish.

That would (would have) been a good ride. Are you sure it blown and not just dirty (easy fix)? Let me know if things change. I'm ready to roll:mchappy:

Im going to get there early and have the leg off waiting for them to open at 8. Hopefully they'll be able to get it done and Ill be out of there before 9.

What time were you planning on rolling out and which way were you thinking of heading?

It's going to be tight, so we are asking all campers to squeeze up! We expect around 40-50 more people than last year.

Meal tickets - email me and let me know for sure, 5 or 8 meals. Pay on arrival immediately!

Looks like I'm leaving at 0900 and going up to Santa Maria to meet up with a buddy, just taking slab for the most part......

too late?

Hey folks,
There is no information on the site about late registration or arrival.
Is it possible to show up on Friday afternoon and partake in the activities even if I missed the Oct. 18th deadline?
Cabin space? Camping? Meal tickets?
This would be my first year and I'm hoping there is still space available.
Thanks,
rage

No problem! Unless we specifically say CLOSED to showing up on the day, just come. The reg page says "There is space, so you can check in when you get there!"

We have to close online reg so we can give the venue numbers, print pages and registration forms etc.

Meal tickets may be an issue - there is limited number, but if you send me a mail and confirm a 5 or 8 meal package we can add you to the list TODAY, past that we have limited spares for on the day sales.
Food is readily available 10 minutes away.

see you there!

Thanks and Photos

Huge thanks once again to everyone who supported the raffle at Cambria to raise funds for The Ted Simon Foundation and to those of you who came along to my presentation on Friday afternoon and to Ted's on Saturday evening.

It was a real pleasure to meet so many well-travelled and friendly folk and to make some great new friends. A very memorable location and a fantastic four days. Well done to Flip, Craig, Jason and the rest of the team.

Here's a link to some photos from the event.

Grant Johnson 3 Nov 2013 19:20

I hope you're having a great ride somewhere and brilliant autumn weather - or even better on your way south! We're in Germany at the moment, where the weather is much colder than California, but the welcome was also warm!

We want to thank all those who came to this years event for making the HU California event so great! The meetings help to keep the website going and a roof over our heads, and we really appreciate your support. We were also very happy to re-connect with old friends and make new ones! :)

Big thanks to all the presenters for the entertainment, inspiration and information, especially those who came a long way! Muchas gracias to Flip, Allen, Craig, Bill, Nicole, Dave, Jason, the setup crew and all the volunteers for their hard work in making it happen! Special thanks to Ted, who continues to inspire us all.

We will be opening registration for 2014 in the next few weeks as soon as we get back and final details are nailed down, but mark your calendars for Sept. 25-28, 2014. We will send a note when registration is open, and as usual, early bird rates will apply!

Sam Manicom 4 Nov 2013 10:20

What a brilliant event! I thoroughly enjoyed myself. A great atmosphere and such a pretty venue. It was a real buzz to meet up with so many old friends and to make so many new ones.
