Australia 2012 HU Travellers Meeting, Dayboro Qsld, June 8-10, 2012 open now!

With the tremendous success of the 2011 Australia Meeting, Shane has us back in Dayboro for the 2012 event, and registration is now open!

It's going to be a good one again, so be sure to register early and get in for the same price as last year. :thumbup1:

We are also now accepting applications from presenters for putting on a talk; it can be on any bike related travelling topic. Last year we had our most diverse range of topics ever, with some fantastic shows and inspiring talks. To help planning the event we need your application forms in early please!

For some more ideas on what YOU COULD present, see the UK Meeting.

We are also looking for volunteers as usual! We had an excellent crew last year doing a range of activities. It takes help from volunteers to put on the meeting and this year we'll need a few more. When you register for the event you'll have an opportunity to volunteer, and we'd greatly appreciate it if you'd help out for just a few hours. It's a GREAT way to meet people too!

:taz: missed out last year - don't you be a :taz:!
Be :thumbup1: instead by registering now!

For the camping its just turn up. You can walk, ride, hitch or drive! There is a fee payable for the camping that goes direct to the Dayboro Show Society.

In terms of the Hu part, you can pay for the entire weekend ahead of time as part of the registration process or if you can only make one day, pay on the day the single-day fee.

Regards,

Shane

GPS tracks

For those who want some extra riding, you can access GPS tracks from Trans-Australia Trails : Adventure rides around and across Australia . I've just put up my first one, ( I'm very new to GPS stuff ) a short but pleasant ride from Dayboro showgrounds to Maleny. Thought it may be a nice help if we share some tracks around the area.

shanekfalcon 19 Jan 2012 22:15

More maps and GPS tracks

This morning I was told about another website with more maps and GPS tracks ( thanks Darren ). This may be a help to any travelling to the HU TM or just plain travelling around.

Motorcycle Roads (Australia) | SundayMorningRides.com

Each map opens with a 3-second page three picture first but the maps all seem like excellent rides.

What jobs?

I live out Texas way, and may be able to give a hand for the weekend. What jobs do you need doing?

Mart456 22 Jan 2012 16:44

We should still be in Australia around this time, i was wondering if there would be any 4x4 related speakers or whether any talks would be covering South America?

shanekfalcon 23 Jan 2012 04:41

Marty, 4 x 4 speakers are welcomed but as yet none have signed up so keep watching this space as I will post up draft schedule and regular updates. We had some in 2010 and they were really good. A couple of the presenters should be looking at South America, not specifically just South America, but as part of a larger talk. Again, though, the schedule is far from firmed up.

Hank, the biggest jobs outstanding are:

Off road ride leader and sweep.
On road ride leader and sweep.
MC
Someone to rustle up the vendors to come and show their wares.

And I sure there will be a million things on the day I have not yet thought off ...

Any/all help is appreciated.

Hi everyone. Australian Road Rider did a write-up on the 2011 meet and it was quite good - thanks to Mark who authored the article. A copy is attached for you'all; It provides a good explanation of what to expect in 2012.

I would be able to registration desk (maybe 2 of us) if that would help. I not sure that my riding skills are up to being a sweep, but could do if needed.

TravellingStrom 25 Jan 2012 12:03

Hi Shane

I am unable to attend this year, so everyone should have plenty of sleep, unless they can find another spuiker that won't go to bed. I nearly had that talk down pat as well :) Might have to trot it out at Ripley ;)

I think in June I will be somewhere in the UK general area, getting ready to push north and east :)

Maybe I can send a Vmail?

Good luck with the show, I am sure it will be as successful as last years was. It is a great location.

Cheers

Flying not riding ... from Perth

Although its in Australia, its still a long long way from Perth (apparently we're closer to the moon) but in a fit of friday night sillyness I booked two flights for my wife and I to pop on over for the event.

For the same price I could have gone to Bali for the week and spent time by the pool getting merry and more merry gazing at the local bikini clad beauties. Instead I chose to come over there there to gaze upon chunky middle aged blokes with bike gear and tents.

So I'll see you there.

I might be staying in Brisbane so might be looking to scrounge a lift or if I hire a car would be able to give someone else a lift. anyone else interested please let me know and we'll sort something out.

Cheers
Steven

shanekfalcon 28 Jan 2012 06:04

Steven,

You made the right choice!

We've got a few flying in already, so closer to the date put up your arrival time in Brisbane and you may just strike it lucky. If not, some of us live close to the airport and may be able to pick you and your wife up

Helen, that would be great. The biggest issues are to get a few more vendors in and to check what I have done so far for getting participants. And yes, I would love to put you into a session on your travels. Would a 45 minute spot be enough?

In 2011 we had quite a few arrive on the Thursday and a bunch went up to the football club for tea, which is where we also ended up on Friday as well and it was good. So I'ld recommend all the early birds to check it out again. If it isn't open, there are about five or six places in the main street worth a try.

Ride Leaders and sweeps

Hi everyone,

Keeping in mind the size of the group we hope for this year, I would like to have four ride-outs on Sunday morning:

Advanced On-road
Advanced Off-road
Not-so-advanced On-road
Not-so-advanced Off-road

Mike and Jo Hannan are locked in for ride leader for the Advanced On-road and Frank Kuruz as sweep.

:mchappy:
So now I'm putting out the call for ride leaders and sweeps. I'm after riders who know the areas well and perhaps will get in touch beforehand and plan the ride a bit. Looking at 2.5 hours each ride so that we can stagger the departure and arrival times as well. If you're up to the challenge, please let me know.

Thanks,

Shane

HU Meeting..... Dayboro

Greetings Shane.

It was great to meet up with you yesterday and chew the fat about the next meeting. Our appologies for not being able to attend as we really enjoy these gatherings..

Like minded souls getting together.... a place where the "doers" get together to encourage the "dreamers".:funmeteryes:

Simon and Lisa... hope you can make the meeting...we will eventually meet one day..took us almost ten years to hook up with the Ratays but we did get there eventually.

Carol and I will fly back to the USA 17th March to resume our North American travels. It is Alaska and Innuvik this summer and really look foward to getting back on the road after an extended stay in Australia due to family matters.

Really encourage everyone who maybe having reservations about going to these meetings. They are really quite inspiring. :thumbup1:

We ran the first Australian H U Meeting in 2003 and remember two young school teachers attending with the male biker so keen to ride overland to his home country Wales and she being filled with fear. :helpsmilie: After the event she was so insired by meeting and talking to other travellers she purchased her own bike, :scooter: learnt how to ride and did a practice run around Australia. Her father also joined them and they returned to our second meeting telling us of their journey. They were really fired up about their anticipated overland ride to the UK. :D

Cheers to everyone and see you on the road..... Ken and Carol Duval

Peter and Kay Forwood will be presenting

Hi everyone,

Just thought I would let you know that we have a top notch posse of presenters lined up and I will post up an update on the schedule. Most noted on the latest arrivals is that Peter and Kay Forwood are coming and will be doing a presentation. Peter and Kay have been on the road now for years on their Harley Davidson Electraglide. Together with the bike they have been to every country on the Earth.

Not one to miss.

becsta 22 Mar 2012 13:43

That is fantastic that Peter and Kay will be there. I will have to double my efforts to make sure I can make it.

We are a couple from Germany and we are „On the Road“ since around 9 month now :scooter: (compared to Lisa and Thomas or Pere and Kay, that´s really nothing… :rolleyes2:)

We started in Germany and crossed whole Eastern Europe and Southeast Asia and in 3 weeks we´ll ship our both 20 years old Honda Transalsps (still running and running without any major problems!) from Timor-Leste to Darwin, so we´ll be in time to visit the meeting!

This will be our first HU-Meeting and we are really looking forward to it!

If anyone is interested

Hi all,
If anyone is interested, I will be leaving Western Sydney riding for Dayboro on the morning of thursday the 7th June. The intention is to head up the Putty road to Singleton and then to Dungog, Gloucester and across the Barrington Tops to Walcha. Then Armidale (maybe get a look at Wollomombi Fall....possible camp spot ???) and then take the old Grafton road to Grafton, then Casino, Beaudesert,etc.......

I'm not too sure how far I will get on the first day but I reckon I'll be rolling into Dayboro on Friday, mid-afternoon.

Your welcome to :mchappy: tag along

becsta 18 Apr 2012 23:32

This is not that far away now so I thought I should start doing some planning.

Do we need to book for a powered camp site? I couldnt see a phone number to make a booking.

It says for a powered site to make sure you have a long enough extension cord. How long is long enough?

Turborob 22 Apr 2012 04:10

I've now registered; looking forward to it.

Hope to arrive Saturday.

There aren't that many powered sites, they are directly opposite the pavilion. I don't think the show society does bookings for sites and so the best advice is to get there early. A 10 metre lead should be enough.

becsta 24 Apr 2012 03:43

Thanks Shane I will try and get there as early as possible.

TravellingStrom 24 Apr 2012 05:28

What you could do Becsta is park near the tree near the pavilion where the camperwagons park and bring along a long power cord and borrow some of theirs ;)

shanekfalcon 26 Apr 2012 00:04

Just wanted to give everyone who is thinking about coming but not yet registered a big shout of encouragement to register. At this stage we have got 40 registrations and I would love to see many more. Early registrations also help with sorting out catering and encouraging vendors.

Also looking for lead riders and sweeps for the off-road loops on Sunday morning. The riders need to sort out a loop beforehand and it would be great if they can chat with the sweep beforehand as well. It would be great to have a advanced off-road loop and a not-so-advanced off-road loop if possible. We've got this sorted for the road loops and just sorting the off-road ahead of time is the last real issue to be solved.

Thanks,

Shane

Good one TS. I hope I can get power from somewhere as these days I travel with so many electric/electronic gadgets. I would probably fall apart if all the batteries went flat and I couldnt use them.

Feeling battered.

Shane,

I now may not be able to make it to the meeting. I've just had the classic Australian motorcycle accident - a 'roo landed on my front wheel when I was doing 80 km/hr. Needless to say the landing was hard and I'm now stuck in bed with a broken pelvis with a quote of 6 weeks until its healed. Hopefully I'll be sufficiently mobile again by June to get there one way or other - but thought I should give you a heads up.

All the best

Martin,

Very sorry to hear about your accident. Must have been terrifying and painful for you. Hopefully the kangaroo is roo..ted. Thanks for the heads up and let me know if there is anything we can do to help. My guess is that the bike is fairly bad as well.

Regards,

Shane

navalarchitect 7 May 2012 08:56

Shane,

Thanks for the thoughts. Too quick for it to be terrifying. Yep I think the kangaroo probably suffered more than me - 200+ kg barrelling into you at 80 km/h is a lot of kinetic energy.

The bike survived remarkably well - a bit scuffed down one-side and an indicator gone, and maybe forks slightly bent but I was still able to ride it home to Newcastle (but couldn't get off at the other end - that's another story).

Currently still hoping to make the meeting - just hope I heal fast.

Good luck with the organising - I know unpredictable presentors like me will be but one of your challenges over the coming week. Hopefully see you in June. If I don't I'll at least finish my notes so they can be handed out to anyone interested.

Paul D. Thanks also for your thoughts. I don't know if it counts as roo-venge, but one of my sons cooked tea for me when they discharged me from A&E - it was kangaroo stew.

Owe you both a beer if I make it to Daybro.

Martin

navalarchitect 9 May 2012 08:32

Becsta,

thanks for the thoughts. It was one of your local 'roos that got me - happened on the road between Bungedore and Tarago.

Now rating myself as a 75% chance for Daybro - so hopefully see you there.

Glad everyone else appreciated the Roo Stew!

Hi everyone,

Just to let you know that we have 45 confirmed attendees registered, this is the same number for the same time as last year, so we are getting there. The spread of home locations is much higher with more travellers from across Australia and overseas than before. This should make for an even more interesting bunch of people and event. The mix of bikes is even more eclectic as well.

Regards,

Shane

shanekfalcon 18 May 2012 02:59

Are you planning anything in the NSW area later in the year?

Hi Martin,

As yet we do not have any 4x4 presentations; yours would be the first one for 2012. However your presentation is most welcome. Come on down ( or up I guess ).

As yet, we have no plans for a HU TM in NSW for 2012. Each HU TM is organised by volunteers and the first step is for a group of volunteers to put their collective hands up and say yes, we'll do one. From that start there is a lot of work, but its not that hard.

Hope to see you at Dayboro in June.

Regards,

Shane

Registrations ...

Nine (9) days to go to the start of the Horizons Unlimited Travellers Meeting in Dayboro Queensland - 8 - 10 June 2012. If you're coming but have not registered you need to do so ASAP. Registrations that include Saturday night dinner and/or Sunday morning breakfast will close tonight. You can still register after that, but not the dinner/breakfast as I need to get final numbers to the caterers.

It should be a GREAT weekend.

G'Day SHane,

Just registered paying $45 but the site says food all booked out, am I too late?

Advice for a first timer

Hi all

I'm attending my first ever HU Meeting and i'd really appreciate some advice.

I'm bringing a tent, sleeping bag etc but i'm sure there are some items i have forgotten, any advice would be most welcome

Cheers

Steve

Mike.C 29 May 2012 21:57

Steve, these meetings are really laid back, but not at all like a "rally with obligatory bonfire and pissup" more of a networking and learning meet. Just bring enough camping gear to be comfortable there are showers and all amenities on site you could want and a bakery within 15 minutes walk.

The evening presentations are a great time to partake in a bottle of red if your that way inclined while hearing from some interesting people with great pics.

Enjoy the ride up.

Nine (9) days to go to the start of the Horizons Unlimited Travellers Meeting in Dayboro Queensland - Friday 8 - Sunday 10 June 2012. If you're coming but have not registered you need to do so ASAP. Registrations that include Saturday night dinner and/or Sunday morning breakfast HAVE closed. You can still register to attend and join in, but Saturday night dinner and Sunday morning breakfast numbers have closed and you will either have to self-cater or enjoy the delights of the local bakery and shops. The bakery is very nice BTW; it helps me keep my fine figure!

Steve, it may be cold, so pack warm clothes.

There are plenty of shops nearby, so don't worry too much, just pack a credit card:thumbup1: . As Mike says, it is very laid back. See you there.

Shane

Sounds good, im also riding up from Sydney.

Quandary 2 Jun 2012 09:18

Marty, show up and pay on the day is just fine. Just be aware that numbers are closed for the catered Saturday night dinner and Sunday morning breakfast but there are a number of local stores and a facilities for self-catering as well. We have a very full schedule of talks etc, so you are sure to have a good time.

Shane

He everyone,

Lisa and Simon Thomas are our presenters on Saturday night and they are also doing a workshop on photography during the day. Here are some photos from Simon and Lisa:

becsta 4 Jun 2012 09:40

Not long now. I am really looking forward to this. What awesome photos.

shanekfalcon 4 Jun 2012 11:58

Hi everyone,

Registrations have closed now, but you can still just turn up; be aware that there is a day-only rate of $30.00

Numbers have also closed for catered meals for Saturday night dinner and Sunday morning breakfast. Mind you, above and beyond self-catering, Dayboro has plenty of choices from Eagle Boys to the local pub.

Friday night we were heading off to the football club across the field, but it is the Bowls Club's turn for Friday night meals. Thats about 10-15 minutes walk from the camp grounds but still should be fine.

As of this morning, 117 pre-registrations and quite a few people who are thinking about showing up for a day. Packed schedule too.

See you all there.

Regards,

Shane

Friday night dinner is at the Bowls CLub, not the football club. About a 10-15 minute walk I guess. Alternatively, there is Eagle Boys Pizza, several restuarants/takeways or self catering

Hi Joe, it would be great to meet and ride up with you guys but im on an Honda XR400 which i think may struggle with highway speeds :(. Don't want to put the bike under pressure or hold anybody back waiting for me. I'll make my own way up on the back roads and see you all up there. Thanks for the offer mate

Cheers

Schedule \ Timetable as at 7 June 2012

Hi everyone,

A few small changes to the schedule, with slots for presentations on the Road of Bones with Compass Expeditions, a talk on preserving your IT gear and making it work for you and a presentation from Haydn and Diane Durnell as well.

The schedule is jam-packed and not every presentation will be for everyone. From time to time you may want to miss a presentation to have a chat with a vendor or an old - or new - friend. So if you need to miss a presentation that's AOK, just be sure that when having a chat that you are so close to the door etc to be heard over the presenters.

See you all there.

Regards,

Shane

Shane, Dorothy and Helen,

Thanks for all your efforts that led to a wonderful meeting - as good and as inspirational as ever. I've come away from the meeting reinvigorated and inspired - and with the information to change my thinking from "I'll probably go to Africa next" to "I will go to Africa next". Roll on 2013.

Martin,

Glad you got home safely and reasonably comfortably. You really made a huge effort to be there are your presentation was great.

Just a reminder to everyone that we need to spread the word a bit and if you can send photos to me that would be great. Better yet, upload them to the Flickr account.
