My new Africa Twin.

Hello All,
Well I am now the very proud owner of a 2000 (V ) Africa twin.
She is Blue and whit, I think rather unusual colours.

I have been considering an AT for about a year now, and just got enough money together to buy this baby.

34k miles
.

.
I never see one with this colours before.

.
What should I be looking out for as far as 'things that can go wrong'?

I have a proper alarm, and a serious 'man' chain to padlock it into the base of my garage.

Very nice, mine is the same colour. As for stuff going wrong, check the output shaft from the gearbox where the front sprocket fits. The rectifier/regulator can burn out.The chokes are prone to sticking and the fuel pumps can pack up.Don't let this lot put you off, only the gearbox shaft is serious, the others are easily fixed.Plenty of information at Honda Trail Bike Forums

How much are AT's going for these days ??

I have a 99 with 40,000 miles on and will probably looking to sell it this summer to fund my Africa trip...

Nice looking bike btw :)

I paid £2800 for my 1999 AT with 34k miles on it last summer.I think I paid a bit over the odds, the sellers idea of 'excellent condition' is not the same as mine but then again he did throw in a stack of extras.

Well thats the whole thing with these bikes.. .The extras.

You buy one stock and you can easily add another £1000 when you want luggage, centre stands, tall screens, heated grips etc..

Well, mine has full Give Luggage system, Honda large back box, touring screen, centre stand and is it wonderful mechanical order..

Anyone looking for an Africa Twin ??? :innocent:

Nice looking bike 'vette. :thumbup1:

Just make sure you run the chain slacker than 'normal', about 7cm flex in the centre of the chain run (looks OK in the pics). The chain being too tight is what knackers the output shaft bearing.

uk_vette 20 Feb 2010 12:37

Hello and Thank you Jim for the advice and the thumbs up.
.
I have not had an AT before.
The closest I had was probably my Yam XT350, or my SUZi RM500 (killing machine)

I swear that bike just wanted to kill me every time we were out !

So, the chain I should run a little slacker than normal.

I remember that.

Since these were taken, iv fitted a Fabrini touring screen and have 2 Givi E35 side boxes with the givi steel rack.

1999 RD07a (X model) - T registered.
40,000 miles (ish)
Mikuni Vacumn pump fitted to replace dodgy original.
Good tyres
Electrics all perfect
Honda centre stand
Crash bars
Honda back box
Give hard plastic luggage and racks
Good tyres
Goodridge stainless brake hoses (f&r)
Forks serviced and stiffened with 15W oil.
Brake calipers are corrosion free.
New brake pads
Brand new headstock bearings.
fabrini touring screen.
Rims are in good shape (recently got a new front rim)
Starts first time EVERYTIME even in the harsh winter
Chokes working perfectly.
Well maintained and serviced by myself while i've owned it.

Bad stuff...

Tank and left fairing has been scratched but painted to hide it very well. I didnt even notice.

Could do with new chain and sprockets in a couple of thousand miles.

General wear and tear that you'd expect from an 11 year old bike.

Ignition key doesnt match seat lock (plenty of keys though)

I've invested about £3000 in this bike over the last 12-18 months. I was going to put it up for sale in the Autumn for £2750 but if someone offers me something like that before then, i'd be hard pressed to turn them down !!

Well Ted,

What can I say,

Thats a great looking bike, and it sounds like you have looked after it well.

Pity I have bought mine just a few weeks ago.

Any way, I hope it sells well, and you get your cash.

In the UK, the registration letters used to run A-Z, changing every year and then start again.

So, this is this case "T" was for 1998-1999.
