My new Africa Twin.
Hello All,
Well I am now the very proud owner of a 2000 (V ) Africa twin. She is Blue and whit, I think rather unusual colours. I have been considering an AT for about a year now, and just got enough money together to buy this baby. 34k miles . http://i902.photobucket.com/albums/a...w%20AT/AT1.jpg . I never see one with this colours before. . http://i902.photobucket.com/albums/a...w%20AT/AT2.jpg . What should I be looking out for as far as 'things that can go wrong'? I have a proper alarm, and a serious 'man' chain to padlock it into the base of my garage. 'vette |
Very nice, mine is the same colour. As for stuff going wrong, check the output shaft from the gearbox where the front sprocket fits. The rectifier/regulator can burn out.The chokes are prone to sticking and the fuel pumps can pack up.Don't let this lot put you off, only the gearbox shaft is serious, the others are easily fixed.Plenty of information at Honda Trail Bike Forums

How much are AT's going for these days ??
I have a 99 with 40,000 miles on and will probably looking to sell it this summer to fund my Africa trip... Nice looking bike btw :) |
I paid £2800 for my 1999 AT with 34k miles on it last summer.I think I paid a bit over the odds, the sellers idea of 'excellent condition' is not the same as mine but then again he did throw in a stack of extras.

You buy one stock and you can easily add another £1000 when you want luggage, centre stands, tall screens, heated grips etc.. Well, mine has full Give Luggage system, Honda large back box, touring screen, centre stand and is it wonderful mechanical order.. Anyone looking for an Africa Twin ??? :innocent: |

Just make sure you run the chain slacker than 'normal', about 7cm flex in the centre of the chain run (looks OK in the pics). The chain being too tight is what knackers the output shaft bearing. |
Hello and Thank you Jim for the advice and the thumbs up.
. I have not had an AT before. The closest I had was probably my Yam XT350, or my SUZi RM500 (killing machine) I swear that bike just wanted to kill me every time we were out ! So, the chain I should run a little slacker than normal. I remember that. 'vette |

Good tyres Electrics all perfect Honda centre stand Crash bars Honda back box Give hard plastic luggage and racks Good tyres Goodridge stainless brake hoses (f&r) Forks serviced and stiffened with 15W oil. Brake calipers are corrosion free. New brake pads Brand new headstock bearings. fabrini touring screen. Rims are in good shape (recently got a new front rim) Starts first time EVERYTIME even in the harsh winter Chokes working perfectly. Well maintained and serviced by myself while i've owned it. Bad stuff... Tank and left fairing has been scratched but painted to hide it very well. I didnt even notice. Could do with new chain and sprockets in a couple of thousand miles. General wear and tear that you'd expect from an 11 year old bike. Ignition key doesnt match seat lock (plenty of keys though) I've invested about £3000 in this bike over the last 12-18 months. I was going to put it up for sale in the Autumn for £2750 but if someone offers me something like that before then, i'd be hard pressed to turn them down !! |
Well Ted,
What can I say, Thats a great looking bike, and it sounds like you have looked after it well. Pity I have bought mine just a few weeks ago. Any way, I hope it sells well, and you get your cash. 'vette |
Looks very clean! no muddy bits
Ted- bit confused over the reg- 'T' reg is from 1st August 1978 to 31 July 1979 - can you clarify? might be interested - |

So, this is this case "T" was for 1998-1999. |
how many Km is too much??
Hello there boyz and Gals!!! :)!!
i've planned a tour in south america, roughly 20.000km, and i'm gonna need a bike.... i have looked around for the last few months and i finally have my 2 option: KLR 650 Africa Twin Now, i never owned any of the two but i did lots of research on the KLR and seems to be a good bike , easy to fix and find part for it and a 4/5 years model is pretty cheap too. i will start my trip in chile, and i might go to argentina to buy the bike. well to make a long stori short... HOW RELAIBLE IS AN AFRICA TWIN COSIDERING THAT YOU CAN ONLY FIND MAX A 2000 MODEL?? are 40 000 km too much for it>>>??? i know a lot of that can vary from the previous owner and the way he treated the bike, but lets say the bike looks good and has 50 000km and is a 1998....would that be ok with an other 20 000km on top of it??? 70% tarmak ?? thank you very much for taking some time to read this tread, i'm very cunfuse...i would love to buy an africa twin but i'm a bit scared is gonna be a bit too risky... please thoughts!!!! Cheerss!!":)!!! |

As with any bike.. It's not necessarily the mileage, its the condition , and how it has been looked after. You can easily put 100,000 PLUS on an Africa Twin with no problems. Many have done. The Africa twin is better road bike than the KLR but quite a bit heavier. It really is a handful, especially when fully loaded. Id be perfectly happy with a 1998, 50,000km Africa twin. Just swap the fuel pump for a vacumn one, check the countershaft seal and enjoy !! |

Very nice bike. If only I didn't have a TA..... However, I'd consider blanking the 'plate using any image editing programme. Just a thought! |
