festering cesspit
 

I want to get off this festering cesspit they call the united kingdom. anyone got good tips as to cheap ferries from the south coast to France. Looking to leave around 7th August and have an open ticket that I can chose when to come back (when the cash runs out)?

Not sure mate. I need to go off aswell. Planning on going in about a year when I have some more £££££. In the mean time I might do a bit of green laning or something.

In answer to your question I wander if the euro tunnel may be cheap. I think some of them can be cheaper if you just turn up when there not busy?

instead of open ticket, buy a single for each journey when the time arrives, from speed ferries. it will vary from £29 to £9 depending on date and time of sailing. they make no surcharge for singles

If you're thinking of heading south when you get over the water and Portsmouth is close,try LD Lines.They took over the P&O route from Portsmouth-Le Harvre a while ago.I've booked return for me and the bike for £88 so halve that and you get some idea for a one way,maybe less if you don't mind turning up and trying to haggle for an empty place.If i had a more flexible time scedule for my trip i would try this as i've had some success in the past.Also if i remember correctly they also run to one of the ports further south from Le Harvre but you'll find out from their website no doubt.

Just to add.....
The service outward is an overnight one so another bonus is you'll arrive all nice and fresh for a good day's ride.Think the inward is evening but again not sure.

cheers for the replies. just booked euro tunnel for £40 outbound at a set time (23:00) next week. They had flexi-fares for £99 one-way (coming back). But it makes more sense to just book a standard £40 fare on the way back while in France.

might investigate the portsmouth option when I head down there again in october-ish time.

Hi, I have travelled with Norfolk Line, me and bike was about 22quid, one way, for the return I wanted a little flexibility so phoned them from abroad the day before, return trip was 27quid.

Crossing is Dover/Dunkirk which takes 2 hours, the chunnel seems to be hideously expensive, particularly when booking close to departure date, they hike the price too if you don't stick to prebooked times.

Just turning up is more expensive than prebooking.

aye, the tunnel is a more expensive option. but coming from Edinburgh, it's ideal to be able to have a bit of flexibility (they tend to let you on the next train with space).

was in a shop the other day, and saw on a packet of pistachio nuts the words "this product may contain traces of nuts", are people really that daft that they need to be told? drives me nuts...

I'm in the worst bit (south east) best thing about it is it's the easiest and quickest bit to leave the place from. If i didnt have the commitments i've got i'd be gone tommorow, come to think of it whenever ive got a few days off i am, gone, that is.:taz:
