Video editing software

I`m about to embark upon a year long trip and want to capture it with my camcorder. I`m also taking my samsung NC10 netbook. Has anyone got any thoughts on a video editing software package I could use with a netbook?
Cheers

Video editing on a netbook is at best painful using standard definition footage, at worse, near impossibly slow for HD.

I noticed that some of the Sanyo HD camcorders can actually resize and export footage straight from the camcorder. Something like that appeals to me so I can upload reduced quality clips while I'm on the trip and not have to mess around trying to manipulate HD footage on a 'calculator'.

You didn't mention whether you will be filming in SD or HD?
I tested out my camcorder (SD & HD filming) together with my asus netbook using windows movie maker. SD fine to edit on the netbook, HD not so much. I do however have both the .avi and .mov files stored on a portable hard drive vs. the netbook. I can deal with the HD raw footage once I get home. That's good enough for me and have very low standards, no Spielberg in the making here.

Other good free software, Wax and Virtual Dub - though haven't tried these on a netbook.

Sony Vegas Movie Studio

Hi!

We're taking Canon HF100 full HD 1080i camcorder with us. I bought Sony Vegas Movie Studio which allows me a lot more than simple Windows Movie Maker. When it comes to the performance your main issue is going to be the footage itself not the software. I've tried doing 1280x720 on my friends netbook and it did render an already edited project but working with the raw HD footage there was no hope for. That's why we'll be taking a 15 inch laptop with us for the trip - they're not hugely expensive anymore and will get the job done. As mentioned above I'll also deal with the raw 1080p footage after I'm back home.

I got Sony Vegas Movie Studio 2009 Platinium version for about 30£ from ebay. Give that a go. It's a semi pro piece of software but easy to use.

Journey Far Beyond - Dookola Swiata na motocyklu

This is our website and the first video done using the mentioned camera and the software. It's in Polish so I don't anticipate you'll understand a lot :) but it's just to show you what you can do with this setup.

Happy hunting!
Andy

Thanks for the input folks! I intend to film in SD and bought the netbook specially fo the trip. There must be some basic software that will work on a netbook that will also allow me to import music from i tunes (that counts out windows movie maker I think!)

Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinium will wokr on your netbook without any problems and since you're shooting in SD you shouldn't have problems editing the footage. In this software you can put up to 4 tracks of audio on top of each other so you can have the original sounds from your film, background music, special audio effects and one more channel for whatever you fancy. All you do is import the files you want to work with and off you go!

Hope this helps
Andy

Thanks Andy,

But I`m not sure - Will the sony vegas work on 1024x600 screen resolution? Thats always been the problem wth all the software I`ve tried.
