Summer gloves with knuckle protection?
2 Attachment(s)
Hi all,
I am looking new summer gloves (prefer leather, which do not have any goretex etc liner) with good knuckle protection. Really important thing is that they should not loose colour! I have been using now one year Alpinestars gloves, which have lasted much better compared to BMW summer gloves, but only extremely annoying issue is that they loose a ton of colour. Every time I ride in rain, my hands are totally black! I contacted Alpinestars (Italy) and complained how much they are loosing colour. Their answer was that I should use gloves with goretex-liner when it rains... :stormy: :confused1::thumb down: |
Wouldn't expect that with Alpinestars (given the price) I'm very happy with my Richa and Held gloves. Neither seem to leak dye.

Otherwise these gloves are really strong and good. One year of hard usage and still holding really well. |
I would recommend anything made by held... My new fav glove brand. Find a website selling them then search for reviews on YouTube...

For example BMW gloves wore out from palm area in 6 months! Compared to this these Alpinestars have been really strong (only problem is that I should not wear them when it rains...) |
BMW gloves are overpriced poop.... Held are really good. Mine are wearing fantastically...

If you can stand the price these are really good:
Held Touring Star Glove - Black - FREE UK DELIVERY saves having to carry a pair of waterproof, and a pair of "normal" gloves. They also do a vented version with a goretex second chamber as well. |
Mine are the Score II
Held Score II Gore-Tex Glove - Black - FREE UK DELIVERY I really can't recommend them enough. No gimmicks... Just a well made glove with a ceramic wrist liner, armoured hard knuckles and Gortex lined for 100% waterproofing. They are good from Spring-Autumn. If you're hardcore you could wear them all winter with heated grips. They aren't a pure Summer glove though. I think they would be too hot for prolonged riding at 30c. For a 3 season all-rounder though, they're fab... Price might make you gulp but you get what you pay for with Held stuff. Germans got it right... |

I've got a pair of Road Champs- perfect for hot days on a GS- like a motocross glove with kangaroo on the palm. Made in the same factory as the race gloves apparently. A lot of the time tooling round here in the Highlands I wear their Warm n' Dry Goretex mid weight gloves. Thin palms designed to work better with heated grips- genius. I love 'em. Last gloves I had that leaked dye like those Alpinestars were crappy Fieldsheers. |

I have Rukka goretex gloves which I am using when it is cold and raining. I am especially looking for well vented summer gloves. |
I've been using Rev'IT Striker the last two years, before that I used a model which is now out of production.
They work, but I do get black hands ... but then again I like to have fresh air around my fingers. Casper |
I use Richa and have never had any colour leakage & my winter gloves are still totally waterproof after 3 years.
My summer / trail bike gloves are an old version of their Magma Magma › Gloves › Products › Richa Moto Fashion My winter gloves are these: Waterproof Racing › Gloves › Products › Richa Moto Fashion They're not overly warm, I wear silk liners & use heated grips. If it's really cold, I add handlebar muffs. |

I have had 2 Alpinestars summer gloves (one trail type and one street type) and both of them had the same problem. So, I think this is not a quality issue, it is just a way how Alpinestars gloves are... Shame, because those gloves fit my hand really well :( |
Here are some good video reviews of gloves:
Best ADV & Dual Sport Gloves 2014 Guide - RevZilla The Held gloves look best to me (not the expensive Rukka one) I bought a $48 pair of Olympia gloves a couple years ago. They are OK but not for cold weather. If you can locate a good BMW, Triumph or Ducati dealer you may find a shop with a decent stock of gloves on hand that you can try on. Otherwise, you are shopping blind. I found my Olympia gloves while on the road in Idaho at a BMW/Triumph dealer. My old gloves were worn out so I bought these. |

I am looking for breathable summer glove (no goretex), so held and Dirt2 from this review looks the best for me. I am just wondering if they let me to dip these gloves to a water bucket to see if it looses any colour :D:clap: |
Dunno, Rev Zilla are pretty good about returns though. CALL THEM ... they will talk to you and may know if those gloves will bleed color or not. They are a very good company to deal with, IMO. (for mail order) You may find it a dollar or two cheaper somewhere else ... but you won't find better service.
BTW, it decades of riding and dozens of gloves used, many many bled color. Silk glove liners may help? Some bled, some don't. Maybe half of my gloves have bled color onto my hands. I hate it too! |
Lee Parks Design deerskin gloves are my new favorites! They're like a second skin. The wrist strap is a little cheesy, but otherwise these are a high quality made-in-USA product.
http://cdn-2.psndealer.com/e2/dealer.../1DTTN0001.jpg Fit is key, and if you get the chance get them from Lee at an event, so you can try on multiple pairs to get a really "custom" fit - because they're natural deerskin every pair within a given size will stretch and fit just a little differently. |

For me they just do not seem to be protective enough, but I could easily use them when driving my car or just wear them normally. I saw similar gloves in Arizona bike week and they are just too "light". |
Hi
Try RST TracTech !! i have damaged thumb joints and these are all day comfy , cost about £45 . They are vented around the fingers , lots of protection and best of all have pre curved fingers . They DO NOT leak their colours so you should be happy :funmeteryes: I am very fussy when it comes to gloves as i do big miles and need to protect what left working on my hands - these are the Mutts for the price unless you want to spend big cash imho  |

I bought a set of Alpinestar gloves and in a few months holes appeared in them as the material came apart. You can see the gloves are new and already coming apart. They wouldn't give me a refund. Never again Alpinestar. And they were 50% more expensive than BMW gloves, which have lasted me 3 years and not lose colour.
I had a set of Five stunt gloves and they also leaked coloured onto my hand when wet. But a very good glove and lots of airflow and protection. So far I been happiest with the BMW GSII gloves. They were replaced with the GSIII glove, which doesn't last as long. My 2 gloves outlasted the 3. The GSII glove finally gave up when very wet and I pulled it on and it ripped. I bought them in 2009 and they lasted daily use until 2012. That is good going. Now I use the other GsII glove with one GSIII glove:( . And this while riding a KTM :eek3: 2014 and still one 2009 BMW glove. I am not a fan out buying branded things, but BMW kit is usually very good quality. I have 2 sets of BMW pants and one jacket. It is expensive but very functional and good quality. You stay dry, never too hot and never cold. And I still have my Five stunt gloves that lose colour when wet, and another set of Five gloves; the Five supermotard glove. I only recently bought these so cant say much about them and haven't had them soaked through yet. But it is a good comfortable glove so far. I cant seem to find gloves not made in China, unlike other bike kit. So gloves still seem to be the worst quality bit of gear out there. It is the only made in China kit I have and the only item that doesn't last. I don't mind paying for something if it is quality. It lasts longer is more functional and ends up cheaper than being cheap stuff and replacing it often. And nothing worse than gloves than wear out while on a trip. |

I would be more than happy to put a bit more money to a decent summer gloves (no gore-tex) which would not loose colour (no need for flashy design) but would offer good protection. I would prefer gloves which has seams outside (I have long fingers and hate seams which put pressure to my fingers). |
I bought a pair of these Cortech gloves a couple of years ago:
Cortech :: Gloves :: Accelerator Series 2 Glove The page shows them as $65, but I think I got them a lot cheaper at a local stealership, maybe $40..? I think they are holding up very well, with no issues. No leaking dye, no stitching issues, very comfortable in mild to hot temps. I've not tested them in a crash, but I think they would offer good protection. |
I owned same or very similar Cortech gloves. They did well. Also have another similar type from Joe Rocket ... all made in China, but not bad.
Most gloves with a BMW logo can be made in China too ... or maybe eastern EU? (Checo, Croatia, Romania?) The difference is ... the BMW logo doubles the price. Not sure what brands are available in S. Africa. Are CorTech, Tourmaster, First Gear, Scorpion, Speed & Strength, Joe Rocket, Icon, Olympia sold there ?? Those brands sell full line of various gloves here in USA ... from crap to quite good. Most range in price from $35 usd to $80 usd. Pay more, get more. I wait for sales ... where the $80 to $100 gloves drops to $40 to $50. That is my price range and I've had some great luck with a few pairs ... the Olympia's being my past favs ... but now ... none of those good ones are around. Wildly changing, fast moving world ... here today, gone tomorrow. :stormy: |
Last year I've bought RS TAICHI RS391 mesh / leather gloves with carbon knuckle guard and precurved design, it feels like wearing second skin.
High quality materials and nicely designed as well. And they were also dirt cheap! |
Held Desert are very nice light summer gloves. Pleny of venting, hard knuckles protection+SuperFabric, kangaroo leather palm.
